It was hour eleven of her twelve hour shift and by now Elle’s nerves were wearing way too thin. Her feet were hurting something fierce, her skirt had all kinds of stains on it because she was tired and clumsy, and if Mr. Grabby hands touched her ass one more time she was probably going to stab him in the eye with his pie fork. And maybe even twist it around a couple of times. Of course she’d complained to her employer about said strange man with the roaming hands, but as usual, her ass wipe of a boss had blown her off because everyone knew the customer was always right and if she wanted to keep this job she’d just play along with him. Well, she really didn’t WANT to keep this job honestly, but she needed to until she could save up enough gas money to get to the next hole-in-the wall town. Her car was running on fumes as it is, and she already owed the motel a few days worth of rent. So she just held it all in, the pie fork and the scream, until hour twelve finally came around. And then she held it in even longer than that because the girl that was supposed to come on for the next shift was a half hour late. Finally, at around 11:30 or so she torn the dirty red-and white checkered apron off and tore out the back door like a caged tiger escaping the zoo. “ FREEEEEDOOOOOOM” Elle lifted her arms in the air and spun around a few times, shouting in her best Mel Gibson as Braveheart voice. Damn, it was good to be free. The willowy blonde climbed into her little car and shoved the keys in the ignition. She was -so- going to go back to the roach motel, climb into a hot bath and… Damn. Was the car supposed to sputter and smoke like that? After a good ten minutes of trying the ignition with no response Elle dropped her forehead on the steering wheel and sighed in defeat. She didn’t have near enough for a cab all the way across town and she was too tired to hoof it. The idea of begging one of her coworkers or her boss for a ride was a fleeting thought, but it died before it was even a consideration because she hardly knew them and didn’t trust any of them as far as she could throw them. Fine. Looks like she would be hoofing it. Why did she feel the need to wear cowboy boots verses those comfy white old people shoes? It couldn’t have been more than a quarter mile before she had to stop and take a rest. Inhaling sharply, she plopped down on the side walk and pulled her boots off to massage her aching toes. Elle couldn’t help but whimper like a little girl. Damn, it…why tonight off all nights did her beater decide to quit on her? Why not on a night she was only working a six hour shift? Because her luck stank, that’s why! She pouted and curled her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them as she turned her head up towards the black sky. It was sprinkled with blinking lights she hoped were shooting stars so she could wish on them, but the blonde was well aware they were really just planes taking off from the nearby airport. Not that that had ever stopped her before. Pretending departing airplanes were shooting stars just happened to be one of her most favorite hobbies, but tonight she just wasn’t in the mood to pretend. She was in the mood to cry, and so she did. Elle’s face was puffy and red by the time she wiped her hand across her eyes to dry them, and she reluctantly pulled her boots back on and steeled herself with the long walk home when she heard the sound of laughter, blips and beeps. What the hell?Pulling herself up to stand she treaded softly around the corner where her gaze landed on a busy arcade swarming with teenagers and adults alike. A huge grin spread across her pretty face and her eyes smiled with it, thinking maybe the night wouldn’t end up so bad after all. --wearing--

It'd been a long, long day.
Lily sat at a table in a dark, smoky corner of the arcade, a half-drank beer before her, her stomach feeling a bit queasy from the cigarette smoke. And the noise! God, the sounds of the games mixing with the tumultuous rumble of shouting, screeching, laughing teenagers were going to drive the hunter crazy. What most people would consider an enjoyable past-time--spending the day drinking in an arcade--Lily just found incredibly annoying.
Still, kids had been disappearing from this place pretty regularly for the past couple of weeks, and it had caught her attention. Lily wasn't entirely sure if the disappearances were supernatural or not, but if something was prey on kids, then she was in. She'd always believed that the second a person did something like that, they became a monster anyway, and as someone who killed monsters as a living, she had no problem taking them out.
Lily looked up from the book that she'd been trying to read--an impossible task due to the horrendous lighting and the incessant noise--when a young woman walked in, looking a bit out of place when compared to the arcade's typical clientele. In fact, she looked a bit familiar to Lily, and it only took the stormy-eyed hunter a moment before recognizing her as the young waitress who had served her lunch at that shithole diner down the street earlier that day.
Poor kid. Lily couldn't help but notice the way that certain customers hadn't been able to keep their hands to themselves around the waitress. It had been very hard for Lily not to simply drop the bastards when they'd done so. It made her sick that the poor girl had to go through that, but Lily also knew that she couldn't help every single person out there, even if she wanted to. Still, from the way that a couple of the guys watched the off-duty waitress, sneering and making suggestive comments to their friends, Lily wondered if she'd have a chance to help the girl out yet.
C'mon, mind back on the goal, Faraday, she thought, smiling at herself and shaking her head. What's more important: busting some heads to protect a waitress or finding out what was taking off with the kids from this arcade? Shrugging, she realized that as long as she was going to be stuck sitting around the joint, she may as well keep an eye on the kid. Besides, dropping a few knucklehead teenagers might just help her work out a bit pent-up aggression.
Her lips twitched into a smile as she downed the rest of her warm, bitter beer. She may just end up having a bit of fun tonight after all.

Elle was giddy as she looked around at all the flashing lights and inhaled deeply of the popcorn and bubblegum aroma. A wide grin was etched across her guileless face and her blue eyes sparkled like the airplane-stars outside. Unfortunately, there was also smoke in the air, so she coughed a little bit too. It took her a minute to catch her breath. The sounds of blips and beeps were a music she wanted to dance to; she could have twirled right then and there…and so she did. It had been ages since she’d been able to feel like a kid, and the arcade was pulling at her inner child with a yummy red licorice rope. Elle had made a few tips on her long, Long, LONG shift, so she pulled a wad of crumpled bills from the dainty little purse wrapped across her, literally bouncing when she shoved them into the machine and waited for them to return as coins. What was she going to play first?! The young woman’s eyes roamed over the various machines, chewing steadily on her bottom lip (which was a nervous habit) and mentally taking stock of her money situation and which games she was going to waste it on. Oh! That zombie hunting game sure did look like fun. It was too bad she never learned how to hold a shogun despite her daddy being sheriff and all… Playing absently with a tousled curl of blonde Elle shook her head and moved on to the next option. Street Fighter. That Chun-Lei was some tough little chick! Elle thought to herself that one day she might like to wear her hair in two little buns like that. But the line was long and she was too ready to get her game on to wait it out. And then her twinkling gaze landed on a crowd gathered around what had to have been fate. Guitar Hero. Huh, imagine that! She’d been playing the instrument since she was like, five. There was NO way she could pass this up. The willowy blonde pushed her way through the sea of bodies until she came to the line for the game. Elle was so keyed up watching, she could barely keep still. She rolled back and forth on her heels. She bit her non-existent fingernails. She clasped her hands in front of her chest and bounced up and down. Elle imagined the anticipation was almost as sweet as actually getting to play. It was such a rush. Now, if only the douche-bags in line beside them waiting to play some a black ops style shooting game would stop touching her ass. It was like the diner all over again. The waitress spun to give them the stink eye, but it only made them laugh like assholes. She crossed her arms over her chest and turned to face her guitar game. She was next in line! This time the jerk weed actually pinched. And it hurt! “Assholes!” Elle twisted towards them again and swore; her hands on her slender hips. “Stop that!”They laughed harder and even high-fived. By the time it was her turn to step up and drape the fake plastic guitar across her chest; Elle was fuming, and those nasty boys were cracking up all over the floor. They thought it was pretty damned funny. Ugh! Why oh why hadn’t she brought that pie fork?! The one with the grabby hands could use a stab and twist, she thought and reached for the instrument, but the group of males took it upon themselves to push her out of the way and cut line. Elle was madder than a bull at the rodeo, but she wasn’t going to sink down to their level. Holding her breath she stormed over to get a coke from the snack bar, and stomped over to plop down at the first table she came to. Which…just so happened to be occupied. “Hey.” She said nonchalantly to the pretty brunette across from her, but acting as if it were no big thing she was sharing a table with a stranger, Elle stuck the straw in her mouth and started chugging. She was angry drinking. If she drank, she could get one heckuva’ buzz, but she didn’t so…she had to make do with the caffeine high. “Don’t I know you?” Elle finally turned in her stool to face the lady, tilting her head a little as she regarded the petite dark haired woman. “I’m sure I’ve seen you somewhere…” And she stuck her straw in her mouth and chewed, regarding the woman with a wide, curiously azure gaze.

Lily flashed the girl a comforting smile.
"That'd be because you have seen me somewhere," she said, absently playing with her empty glass. "You served me lunch today, in fact. If you don't mind my saying, you're the only redeeming feature that place has going for it. The shit-hole diner, I mean. My name's Lily." She extended her hand to the waitress, but before she could get a name in return, the same obnoxious boys from earlier came sauntering over to the table.
"Check it out, guys. She's got a cute friend too," one of them said, grinning and leaning on the back of a chair at their table. "Never seen the two of you 'round here before. How about we get together, and my friend and I can show you the sights, huh?" His three friends all chuckled, nodding and leering at the girls.
Christ, I hate teenagers, Lily thought in disgust, wishing she had another drink. It didn't seem to matter to the little shits that she was, in all likelihood, some ten or so years older than them, they just thought maybe that had a shot at getting a piece of ass... Sighing, she shook her head, fairly certain that things were about to spiral out of control.
"No thanks, seen the sights," Lily told them, forcing a smile. They were just kids, really, and she couldn't quite justify beating them up. Yet. "How about you all go along and play, and leave the grown-ups to talk, okay? Pretty sure there's plenty here to keep you entertained until your parents call you home for bed."
The hunter hoped that her scathing words would be enough to get the point across, but she really doubted it. God, why did kids today have to be so damned obnoxious?
"Go on," she added, waving them away. "Shoo."

Elle’s cheeks took on a pinkish tint when the woman confirmed their acquaintance; the compliment from the pretty woman like a corporal pat on the top of her crazy curly blonde head. She dipped her chin and chewed harder on the straw, stretching out her clammy palm until it made contact with the other. It was a little embarrassing when she ran into people she’d waited on out of uniform, especially when she hadn’t gone home yet to shower and change. Elle always imagined she still smelled like fried food and onions, and there was probably a bit of flour or spilled coffee somewhere on her clothes. It would have been lucky that the subject had gotten changed so quickly because she SURE didn’t want to talk about that shit-hole or have to thank Lily for the praise, IF the reason for the topic change hadn’t been the bad-mannered teenagers from the Guitar Hero game. Elle rolled her eyes and sighed, straining her face at the brunette as if to silently apologize, like -she- had something to do with the boys’ behavior. Imagine her pleasant surprise when Lily, in not so many words, told the boys to shove it up their ass-holey assholes. The young blonde had to cover her mouth to keep from exploding with laughter, and then on a second thought, let the amusement bubble up out of her. The teens were taken aback, of course. They hadn’t been expecting a female to put up with their snide remarks and then be able to throw them right back. “Yeah, shoo!” Elle echoed after Lily, reaching out to flick one of them on the tip of his nose. The boy scowled, but he was already humiliated, and tucked tail and left along with the others, head hanging down in shame. “Oh. My. GOSH!” Elle clapped her hands and then bounced out of her chair, scooting the tall stool closer to Lily’s. “That was absolutely amazing. You are like…my hero now. Seriously.” The young woman beamed at the dark haired female as she slid back into her seat. She rested her elbow on the tabletop and propped her chin in her palm as she gazed at the woman thoughtfully. “Boys are so vulgar.” She told the female, shaking her head. “But I guess grown men aren’t any better…” Elle added quietly, remembering some of the grabby-handed customers she’d had during her shift…which Lily had probably seen. Gah. No wonder she wasn’t concerned about finding a cute guy and the whole fairytale love thing…why on EARTH would she want anything to do with the whole male species? The willowy waitress let her mind wander, along with her gaze, which landed right back where it had started. Obviously the boys had scared off any competition that might have been waiting to play and the game was abandoned. “Heyyyy…” Elle looked back at Lily with an impish grin. “The guys you just chased off wouldn’t let me play what I wanted but now it looks like it’s free. Come on. You haaaave to rock out with me.” And with that the slender blonde grabbed Lily’s hand, tugging her toward the arcade game.

Lily's initial reaction was to pull away.
She couldn't go play a damn video game, she was on the job! Something here was preying on these kids, and if it decided to take someone while she was distracted, she would never forgive herself. Besides, what would Brennan or Quicksilver think if they found out that she'd been playing when she was supposed to be hunting?
Still, though, there was something infectious about Elle, and rather than pull away from the younger girl's grip, Lily found herself dashing across the arcade with her. As they reached the Guitar Hero game, Lily's phone began to ring, and she gently pulled away from Elle just long enough to answer it.
"Hey, Brennan," she said into the phone, her eyes lighting up and her smile broadening. "Yeah, I..." She paused for a moment, looking at Elle and realizing she needed to be careful about what she said. "I'm out. You know how it is, right? No, its fine, really. I've got it under control. I'll be home later, okay?" Smiling even more, Lily finished, "I love you too. Bye." Putting the phone away, she turned her attention to Elle and the game.
"Okay," she said, looking at the game incredulously. "Damn, I remember playing this game when I was a kid... Didn't think they still made it any more." Taking the plastic guitar controller and checking it over, Lily grinned at Elle. "You sure about this? I used to be pretty good, when I was like ten."

Yay! So the slightly older woman who had instantly become her hero didn’t run in the opposite direction when Elle not-so-subtlety invited her to play. This made the young blonde feel like clapping giddily and bouncing up and down like a three-year old, which she did, even as Lily’s phone chimed and she pulled away to answer. Elle strapped the plastic guitar across her chest and was picking her alter-ego on screen-- an Asian looking female with striped stocking and black pigtails, trying her best not to eavesdrop on the phone conversation, which was altogether impossible for the off-duty waitress especially seeing the woman’s soft eyes turn to bright stars and a blissful smile stretch across her pretty face when the person on the other end spoke. The teenager chewed on her bottom lip and pretended to focus on picking a song, when really she felt like dying a little when she heard the short, but sweet exchange between the lovers. It kinda’ felt as if she’d just invaded some secret between them…Lily and this Brennan that made the woman’s cheeks turn a sweet shade somewhere between blush and scarlet when she ended the call with a quiet ‘I love you too’ before tucking the cell away. Was Brennan a boy’s name? Elle asked herself inwardly when Lily turned back to her with a question of if she was really sure about the challenge, and she quickly forgot her mental inquiry and nodded enthusiastically. “I’ll have you know I can pick a guitar like nobody’s business.” The blonde smirked and arched a slender eyebrow. “I’ve never played this, but it can’t be THAT much different…right?” She readjusted the instrument across her middle and picked a song that was familiar-- Sweet Home Alabama-- before tilting her head at her new champion. “You outta’ be asking if I’ll go easy on you…” Elle chirped with a playful grin that brightened the already glowing atmosphere around the teen. A contagious laughter bubbled up from her when the song started and she struggled to keep up with this finger on the red button and then another finger on the blue, but win or loose, the young woman didn’t care. This was just what she needed…being a kid with no worries about whether she could put money in her gas tank or if she could afford a room to sleep the next night. “So…” Elle couldn’t help the curious expression that was written across her visage when she let her attention stray from the game. “Is Brennan your boyfriend or somethin'?”

Lily wasted no time choosing her character and getting into the game.
God, it brought back memories! She had begged her parents for weeks to get her this game when she was a kid, and spoiled only child that she was, she had of course gotten it. For months she'd been absolutely addicted, playing it everyday after school, and on the weekends, and pretty much whenever she could. Those had been the days...
Now, after some fifteen or so years, Lily was surprised to find how easy it was to get back into it. Sure, she hadn't played in years, but she made up for it by being far more dexterous now than she had been when she was ten. So, though she did happen to miss a note or two, Lily actually did pretty good. What's more, she was grinning by the time the song was over, and she couldn't remember the last time she'd had this much fun.
Once the next song started, and Elle asked about Brennan, Lily immediately felt a bit guilty again. God, what would Brennan think of her, playing around when she was supposed to be on the job? Just one more song, she thought, then I'll get back to work...
"No, she's certainly not my boyfriend," Lily answered with a chuckle, followed shortly after by a curse as she messed up a long string of notes. "She's... well, I mean... I guess she's sorta my girlfriend." Scowling playfully, she added, "Are you just trying to distract me with conversation so I keep messing up? If so, mission accomplished."
Returning her attention to the game, Lily watched Elle out of the corner of her eye, wondering what the girl's reaction would be. Truth be told, Lily was still having a hard time telling people that she was in a relationship with another woman sometimes. It wasn't that she was embarrassed, or ashamed, she just didn't want people to act differently around her once they found out. She was the same Lily Faraday she'd always been, she just happened to be madly in love with a woman now...
Okay, yeah, it was a little weird that she was a lesbian now, but whatever...
So, on she played, managing to keep up with the younger girl, and sort of hoping that she hadn't accidentally scared her new friend away...

Elle wasn’t the kind of girl to be bothered by Lily’s preference in ‘partners’, nor was she the kind of girl to be concerned by the choice words that were coming out of the woman’s mouth when she messed up a guitar riff, even IF they were bad enough to make a sailor blush. Instead she snorted in amusement, sticking her tongue out of the side of her mouth and trying to concentrate on the series of colored buttons that her fingers were supposed to follow. The intense look of concentration didn’t last long before Elle was laughing uncontrollably, not only because of Lily’s accusation, but because the cartoon audience in the game had begun booing. They were THAT bad. When the song ended Elle didn’t opt to play a second round because by now she’d found out she really wasn’t as good at the old game as she was actually picking a guitar, and she was -so- over it, and hung the plastic instrument back on its holder so she could turn back to her new friend-slash-hero. The discussion about Lily’s girlfriend wasn’t anywhere near over yet, just because Elle was a big curious cat that still had, oh, three or so lives left. “So, this Brennan must be really good looking because BOY! You shoulda’ seen the color your face turned with all that gooey I love you too stuff (she cooed this part, btw). I reckon it was something along the lines of tomato soup…or fire engine red.” The blonde waitress teased and pocketed the rest of the change she had set aside for a second or third round. “Anyway, it must be nice…you know, to have found somebody. I don’t think I’ll bother with love for…well…for a few more years, if ever.” Prattling on, again, as usual, Elle steered Lily around the arcade; oblivious to the fact the woman might have something else to do or somewhere else to be. “So…you know what I do. You’ve tasted the god awful food at the diner. What do you do, Lily?” She inquired, her guileless gaze darting around the busy place for their next target. “You don’t look like the type of woman to be hanging out in places like this, but if you told me you were a professional gamer, I’d believe you…”And then the blonde stopped dead in her tracks, an arm held out horizontally to stop her partner as well; her gaze wide like the moon and her mouth partially open in awe. “Oh, snap. Laser tag….” Elle turned her face to Lily with a hopeful stare. “Oh please oh please oh please oh please Ive never played and I want to so bad and its no fun without someone to shoot the laser-y thing at oh come on you gotta!” Yes, this was said in one sentence, full speed, without even a pause for breath. How could Lily refuse her?

Lily actually blushed a bit at Elle's words about Brennan.
"Yeah, she's amazing," she told the younger girl, beaming. "I don't really know what I ever did to deserve her, you know?" She shrugged, letting herself get pulled along by Elle, her eyes open all the while for any sign of danger in the arcade around her. "And I wouldn't worry too much about finding love at your age anyway," she reassured her newfound friend. "I'm a few years your senior, I'd bet, and even though I've been with a lot of guys in my life, it took me this long to actually find someone I knew I was in love with..."
Ah, here came the questions that Lily had been expecting. It never failed that everyone seemed to want to know what she did for a living. And, being a hunter, she obviously couldn't tell the truth, or else Elle would think she was crazy. So, Lily decided to be vague rather than straight out lie to the girl, as she normally would to everyone else who was curious.
"Oh, I do a little bit of everything I guess. I'm on the road a lot, so I try not to get tied down to any one place." Well, that was the truth, mostly. So she left out the part about killing monsters, big deal! With her conscience suitably assuaged, Lily was about to change the subject when Elle gripped her hand tightly and rattled off something nearly unintelligible about laser tag.
"I dunno, Elle," Lily said, her eyes darting about the arcade once again as she began absently biting her nails. The laser tag area was in a warren of hallways and small rooms that were basically independent from the rest of the establishment. If she went in there to play with Elle, there was always the chance that whatever was preying on the kids here would strike while she was distracted.
Still, there was a part of her that really did want to give the game a shot. Lily was so wound up lately, and all the hunts one after another after another were slowly starting to wear on her. She knew that she needed a rest, terribly so, but she was always afraid that something bad would happen the very moment that she decided to do so.
So, even though the prospect of laser tag intrigued her, Lily knew she could never forgive herself if someone died or was hurt because of her selfishness...
