Well I see you don't believe your ears but what I said is true She's a pretty little blond-haired girl and she even cooks good too She's got a heart of gold and treats me right But if I were you I'd head On outta here 'cause she hates you and she wishes you were dead I wouldn't hit ya, I ain't that way But I said all that I'm gonna say So you'd better make tracks, you'd better get out of sight 'Cause I wouldn't hit you but my girlfriend might
There were just some days it didn't pay to be so damned good looking. Or at least, it didn't pay to be so good at what he did that every buckle bunny in the tristate area thought they needed to shine his buckle for him. Ash never been one to fool himself into thinking he was the handsomest devil around but he'd gotten a good dose of his daddy's charm to make up for it and somehow... It kept the ladies coming back for more.
And landed him exactly in the sort of predicament he now found himself in. By all that was holy... What didn't the lady understand about a "One Night Stand" that had been MONTHS ago? And they said men were the stalkers?
"WHOA, WHOA, WHOA there DARLIN!" he chimed in a voice full of bafflement and a bit of anger. "That was ..... Oklahoma City.. six months ago and I ain't exactly the settlin type. I believe I was quiet frank about that up front. I was finishing up my run for Vegas and drunk off my ass but I recall mentioning that a time or two...."
The woman in question, a curvy dark haired brunette waved those words away as if they were flies.
"Oh but Baby!! WE were just meant to be together.. I could take care of you when you are hurt and make sure your clothing is clean on the cuircuit and all that."
Blinking rapidly, Ash kept backing up in the dark where he'd actually come to get away from such nonesense and felt his back run into something .. soft.... warm.... Womanly? Risking a glance back over his shoulder, he caught a glimpse of a pretty face and wide eyes that he.. THANK GOD.. recongized.
With a burst of inspiration, he reached behind him, grabbed the hand of the gorgeous blond he'd seen here and there and pulled her forward so that she was standing by his side. He thought he heard her squeek but he was, quite frankly, to relieved to care.
"Well, now Darlin... I'm really sorry to hear you were thinking along that line and while I'm flattered... You see... Truth is... I've met the love of my life and I was just on my way out here to spark with her when she showed up..."he drawled, squeezing the blond at his side tight and sending her a look that begged her to go along with the bogus story.
Not to mention it allowed him to get a closer look at her and becoming startlingly aware of the fact that having her so close made his pulse do funny things.
"Savannah, darlin, this is Jeanine.... I'm afraid I was a very bad cowboy a few months ago before I met you and it seems I may have inadvertently given her the wrong idea...."
When it looked like she might reply, he raised a hand and gave a self concious, bad boy grin.
"I'm really sorry, honey... Like I said, it was before I met you and I've been trying to explain.....Theres absolutely no need to get violent this time though, honey..... You know how I had to bail you out of jail last time that girl pressed charges for you scratching her eyes out and all....."
But this time, the brunette was looking decidedly peeked. She'd looked incredulous before but her eyes were wide and wild now.

Savannah was walking down the dark hallway. She had just left the restroom after someone had spilled a drink on her. She was still fussing with the spot where she had tried to clean up the spill on her top. Most of it was fine, she was just a bit damp now but she wasn't paying attention to where she was going... and why are the hallways in these places always got to be so dark and creepy anyway?
The next thing she knew she had bumped into someone. Before she could mutter an apology, before she was even able to lift her head up to see who she had run into she felt someone grab her hand. Her head jerked up and a small gasping noise left her lips involuntarily as she was hauled up to stand next to some guy.
Again she started to open her mouth to make her apologies when two things happened. First, she recognized the man who she had bumped into and was now standing next to him holding his hand. Second, she tuned into what he was saying.
"Well, now Darlin... I'm really sorry to hear you were thinking along that line and while I'm flattered... You see... Truth is... I've met the love of my life and I was just on my way out here to spark with her when she showed up..."
It took Savannah a minute or so. She blinked rapidly several times, looking back and forth between the man and some dark haired woman. The woman was not looking very happy at the moment either.
"Savannah, darlin, this is Jeanine.... I'm afraid I was a very bad cowboy a few months ago before I met you and it seems I may have inadvertently given her the wrong idea...."
More blinking occurred. He knew her name? Well, she knew his. But of course she would. He was Ashton Jordan, he as a big winner on the circuit. Riding bulls and broncs. Savannah had been writing a series of articles on rodeos so she had been traveling along and following as they worked their way to the big showdown in Vegas. She recalled having met the man in passing a few times. She might have even interviewed him. He had the reputation as a real player so the fact that he remembered her name had her a little off kilter.
Not to mention, did he just call her the "love of his life?" Savannah looked over at the brunette that seemed to have started fuming now. Then the penny dropped and she caught on.
Squeezing Ash's hand and covertly digging her nails hard into his palm she looked at him. Raising her eyebrows slightly in question, but still pasting a dazzling smile on her face. Leaning up she gave him a quick peck on the cheek. Then she turned her head to face the other woman and the smile faded. Replaced by a scowl.
For effect, Savannah balled up her fist and took a couple of aggressive steps forward. Moving toward the dark haired woman Ash had called, Jeanine. Tilting her head to the side slightly as she started speaking in a low growling voice.
"Jeanine, was it? Yeah... I. Think..." she paused,
"YOU BETTER KEEP YOUR DAMN HANDS OFF MY MAN BEFORE I HAVE TO CUT 'EM OFF... AND MY KNIFE IS RUSTY!"
Savannah's voice had rose to a shout. The woman made a strangled screeching noise as Savannah yelled at her. Then Savannah made a quick lurch toward her and the girl took off running the opposite direction. She looked so scared, she didn't think the woman could speak or she would have been screaming like a banshee as she ran.
"YEAH!! YOU BETTER RUN, BITCH!"
Savannah couldn't help herself. She kind of got caught up in the moment. It was sort of funny watching the woman run for her life. Then Savannah got a grip on herself. Again she realized two things. One, she had just yelled and threatened a stranger with bodily injury. Two, she was still holding Ash Jordan's hand.
Turning back to face him she gave him a bit of a look. Confusion flashing across her face she was sure. Then she pulled on his hand and practically drug him down the hallway a little ways to get out of earshot of anyone. She stopped next to the wall and rounded on him again.
"Christ, what the hell just happened there? What did I do?"
Savannah took a deep breath in, trying to calm herself down a bit. Her heart was racing, adrenaline was still pumping through her system. It had all happened so fast and now she was standing here in the dimly lit hall with Ashton Jordan.

We went ridin' around rockin' to the sound Of "A Country Boy Can Survive" And I knew then she was my kinda girl 'Cause she was singin' every single line Then she slid on over put my hand on her shoulder And I asked her what she wanted to do She said, "It really don't matter where we go Just as long as I'm ridin' with you" She said, "Hey boy, do you mind Taking me home tonight? 'Cause I ain't never seen a country boy With tires on his truck this high" I said, "Climb on up, but honey watch the cup That I'm spitttin' my dip inside And hold on tight 'cause it's gonna be wilder Than any eight second ride" Well, Well... Wasn't this a surprise!
Ash couldn't help the grin that spread over his face as the little blond beside him took up the slack and made a mama cat look like a milk sop as she took on the taller brunette. Although he'd admit that he'd never been one for jealously in a female, something about the way this one went after the other woman had a grin playing about his lips and it was all he could do not to bust a gut laughing when "Jeanine" took off for parts unknown.
What had started out as merely a hop to get the stupid woman off his back had turned into an amusing interlude and he found himself giving the blond a good look over as she tugged him along the hallway and towards a private section.
And, honest to god, what kind of man would he have been if he didn't take a moment to admire that cute little hind end she had as they went? It was enough to make certain parts of his anatomy come to life but he force his baser emotions down and concentrated on the less .. er.. physical side of her.
Sure, he knew her name and recognized her from around the circuit but he'd never really had the chance to just observe her because when ever she was around it seemed like he was being pressed at all sides by rodeo buddies, PBR and PRCA personal, and various buckle bunnies all wanting a word with him. Several times he'd wanted to catch her eye but it simply hadn't happened and he'd been to busy to press the issue.
Now, though, it was entirely different ball game.
As she came to rest against a wall and squared off against him, Ash became aware that she was still holding his hand. Her hand felt soft and warm within his but he'd bet she could give a mean right hook if she needed too. She didn't look like a milk sap miss for all her angelic looks and he found himself wondering if she'd be as passionate in a kiss as she was in her mock defense of him.
Suddenly, Ash realized what he was thinking and almost groaned. "Back that pony up!" he told himself sternly as he gazed down at her quizzically and then gave her a slight grin. He wasn't about to repay her by treating her like one of the loose women he usually paid court too.
"Well, you just did me a big favor... That woman was looking to hog tie me and brand me before this poor fool even knew what she was up too.... A single minded woman like that is the ruination of a great many men..... I owe you one." he drawled out before cocking his head and studying her. " Miss Savannah Evans, right? You write for a publication if I remember correctly... I'm Ashton Jordan but my friends just call me Ash. I was about to scad-addle out of here and grab a bite to eat.... I don't suppose you'd care to join me? I promise to be a perfect gentleman...."

After a few deep breaths she started to come back down a little. She could see the grin on his face and she couldn’t help but smile back at him. Now the after effects started to kick in a little.
“I can’t believe I just did that.” She muttered quietly, shaking her head.
"Well, you just did me a big favor... That woman was looking to hog tie me and brand me before this poor fool even knew what she was up too.... A single minded woman like that is the ruination of a great many men..... I owe you one."
“I’m fairly certain you could take care of yourself. “
“Yeah, that’s me. I’m doing some freelance work, series of articles for ProRodeo Sports News Magazine. I love a good rodeo as much as the next girl so it gave me a chance to get inside the circuit and do what I love to do all at the same time. I know who you are. It’s nice to meet you properly though.”
Savannah went to offer her hand in greeting but found that it was still clasped with his. She could feel the slight warm pressure on her fingers and her soft skin against his rougher hands. A little shyly she looked up at him as she slowly slide her hand out of his. A bit reluctant to let go, she wasn’t sure why.
“I’m sorry, didn’t mean to keep your hand hostage there. Ummm. Food actually sounds good right about now. As long as they serve alcohol. I really think I need a beer. Or some whiskey.”
The end of that statement she let trail off a bit. Ending kind of quietly. She suddenly felt a bit flushed. He was looking at her. The man had these amazing green eyes and every time she looked up at them she could swear to God they sparkled at her. Well, no damn wonder all the ladies fell for this one. Though, she didn’t think it was just his eyes. He had that charm for sure, a smooth talker too. But, she was too smart for that right? Not gonna fall for it. Why the hell did her heart just flip flop?
“You know… There’s this little place not to far from here. It’s kind of a bar and grill, maybe more bar than grill but it serves great steaks, chops and burgers. It’s a little off the beaten path and I think it’s free of, what’s the term, ‘buckle bunnies’? I think you’ll be safe from your fan girls in there. “
Savannah gave him a little grin. She couldn’t help make the comment. That’s obviously what Jeanine was, the woman he was trying to escape from. Truth be told she probably should have been running to the hills right about now. The man had a reputation and she was not the type to be another notch in his belt. Nor was she the type to be a ‘Jeanine’. She’d been around the circuit long enough to know better. It was not her thing to jump into bed with just anyone. Not for lack of the cowboys around here trying though. She was pretty good now at deflecting them with grace. Why did she have a feeling that Ash was going to be something else?
With a slight sigh she shook herself out of her drifting thoughts. Those green eyes pierced her again, her heart did that flutter thing again.
“Yeah… I think we should get out of here. Food and drink is calling my name, loud and clear. I think I saw the back exit down the hall there. We can make a quick get away.”
Savannah nodded her head toward the back of the hall. There was a small smile still playing on her lips.

How he managed to get himself into predicaments like this, Ash for the life of him, couldn't figure out. That brunette had been a man eater and he could only figure he'd been to drunk to notice it the night he'd fallen into the sack with her.
Course, he might have been blowing off steam too and when that collided with alcohol and the pain killers that went along with rodeoing? Well, it didn't need saying that a man did some pretty stupid things.
Granted, Ash didn't make a habit of it but if he remember rightly.. That had been a pretty tough fall in Oklahoma and he'd ended up with a bad case of bruised ribs and a cracked collar bone. He was sure the doc had given him a shot of something but the boys had wanted to celebrate that night and he'd been hauled along without a yay or nay for the occasion.
From then on, the night was all a bit blurry. He had a recollection of waking up to the woman in his hotel room but he'd been out of there in a flash and on to the next rodeo.. never giving her another thought until tonight.
Thank god Savannah had been nearby to save his sorry hide. It had clearly been a near miss with the octopus breathing down his neck and trying to get her tenticles around him.
The good lord save him from needy women. He preferred his ladies sassy, independent and capable of kicking his ass if he needed. Just like all the women he'd grown up with. Yeah, his mama, Tess, Tellie and Simi were his idea of perfect women and he'd yet to meet one capable of holding a candle to those paragons.
Just that thought had him grinning and shaking his head at himself right before his attention turned back to the woman beside him. His green eyes glinted warmly as she made her suggestion and he found himself nodding. A sudden urge to get to know her a bit better had him following along like a little puppy as she headed for the door and then he was pulling his keys out as they stepped into the cool, crisp night. Texas might not have hard winters most of the time but there was a bit to the air this evening.
"You wanna drive and follow or would you like to ride with me? Up to you but I'd be more than happy to bring you back here after we're done if you like? Or drop you off whereever if you don't have a vehicle?"

Savannah strode off toward the back exit door. Still trying to process exactly what had happened. She wasn’t a violent woman by nature, but she also wasn’t one to back down. Especially when cornered. Or in this case, taken by surprise.
She could feel Ash was following along behind her, but she couldn’t help a quick glance back over her shoulder to see if he was really still there. The man had a presence about him. As she pushed the door open and stepped out side the brisk air was welcome. Sucking in a deep breath she wrapped her arms around herself instinctively to ward off the chill.
Once they got outside she stopped and turned to face him as he retrieved his keys. When she heard him ask about the driving arrangements she cocked her head to the side a little.
“Oh. I don’t have a car here. I guess I’ll be riding with you. I’m staying at one of the hotels near the rodeo grounds. So, a ride back later would be good, if it’s not a problem. I can always take a cab if you can’t.”
Savannah gave him a small smile. She didn’t want him to feel boxed in to schlepping her back, even though he had made the original offer.
Stepping back slightly she let him take the lead in order to find his vehicle. She waited for him to come around and unlock the door. Once the door was opened she climbed inside. Got herself settled in the seat and pulled the seat belt around and strapped herself in. She watched as Ash then got into the driver’s seat.
“It’s a mite chilly tonight, isn’t it? Kind of nice though. The sky’s clear. Makes everything seem all clean and new out.”
Oh dear God, did she actually just comment on the weather? She shook her head at herself. What was with her tonight? But, the idea of just getting to know him intrigued her. She needed to say something. She folded her arms around herself again unconsciously emphasizing the chill in the air.
Suddenly, out of no where as the truck started to head out into the street, her stomach growled. This was a loud rumbling, no way it wouldn’t have been heard. At first she was momentarily embarrassed. But then, she turned over to look at the man in the seat next to her and started to laugh.
“In case you didn’t notice, I’m about to starve to death over here. Let’s get a move on cowboy.”
Running a hand through her hair she was still chuckling to herself. Then she just seemed to relax. Everything was all good. ((You can just take them inside or whatever. Get them situated with seating and drinks or anything you want to do. You can move her around as needed.))

I’ve been bit I’ve been burned but I’ve lived and I’ve learned from it I’ve made some mistakes but that’s what it takes To make a man out of a kid Yeah I’ve done some pretty stupid things but hey I’m a little bit harder and A whole lot smarter That’s how I got to be this way
Ash was no ones idea of a angel. He'd been around the block and done a few things he wasn't so proud of. He even supposed he should be a bit embarrassed about the whole catastrophe that had lead up to this point in the evening but.. strangely...
He wasn't.
In fact, he reckoned that he'd have done it all over again if it meant getting to spend some time with the pretty little blond by his side. The feeling that she wasn't like the other little buckle bunnies that hung out at the rodeo grounds made him wonder if there was something to her besides a cute smile and a sexy body.
Reaching the pickup, he opened the door and waited for her to climb in before headed around to the other side. Sliding on to the drivers seat of the Dodge, he glanced sideways at her before checking his chew up in the back of the cab and starting the ignition.
Thats when he heard her stomach growl and had to hide a chuckle. She was talking about the weather and being all normal when suddenly... There it was. He thought about teasing her a bit but she seemed to be a bit embarrassed about it so he played the gentleman.
"Your wish is my command, miss." he drawled back with his smooth southern boy accent.
Once they were on their way, he allowed her to direct him to the place she'd been talking about and then pulled in the drive. It seemed be be a little honky tonk bar and grill and he could hear music blazing from inside. Casting her a grin, he escorted her inside and found a table that was just coming up empty.
"Damn... This might just be the best place in town... Live music.... Food.. and a pretty girl. Must be my lucky night!" he said with a wicked grin.
Before he could say anything more, however, a waitress approached and handed them little menu's and took their drink orders. As she left to fill them, Ash flipped open the card and whistled. It was all typical bar food but it sounded and smelled delicious.
"Man.. I didn't realize I was starving until just now. I think I could eat about everything on here..."

The drive was mostly quiet. Just the sounds of Savannah giving Ash directions and pointing out where the place was that they were going. When they arrived they got out of the truck and moved inside. Savannah smiled as he looked over at her with a grin on his face. They got themselves a table, it was a good one, back in the corner. Quiet enough and private enough, but still they could see what was going on and hear the music.
The smile on her faced broadened even wider when he spoke again. She was glad that the lights were dim inside, sure her ears might have turned a little pink as he referred to her as a ‘pretty’. She loved the slight twang of his drawl as he spoke, the twinkle in his gorgeous green eyes and the devilish grin on his lips.
When the waitress came over Savannah ordered a shot of whiskey with a beer chaser. She started to peruse the menu as the waitress went to get the drinks. Lifting her eyes up from the menu when Ash said he was starving.
“Yeah… Tell me about it. Well, I’m not shy about eating. So, we could just order a slew of things here and share it all. Whatever you’d like. I’m not that picky.”
A few more minutes of reading over the menu and the waitress re-appeared with their drinks. Savannah took the shot glass, held it up and gave Ash a little wink before she drank it down. Setting the empty glass down on the table.
“Dang, I needed that.” She commented with a grin.
They went about placing their orders with the waitress. There was so much to choose from and it all sounded so good. She was pretty sure they order way more than they could eat, but she was going to do her best at giving it a go.
Once the order was placed before the waitress left Savannah held her shot glass up and ordered another shot of whiskey. The waitress took the empty glass from her.
“I don’t know about the cowboy over there, but I might need a few more of those shots tonight.”
Savannah smirked and inclined her head in the direction of Ash. The waitress waited to see what Ash wanted and then she left the table again.
“Sooooo… Do you find yourself in need of rescuing often? Then bringing said rescuer out for food and drinks after?”
Savannah chuckled a bit before she spoke again.
“I’m just askin’. ‘Cause, you know, I might be available to run interference if you needed it. But, I wouldn’t want to put a damper on your love life or anything like that.”
Chewing on her lip a bit she found herself looking into his amazing eyes again. She put her arm on the table and rested her chin in her hand as she looked across the table, for some reason not wanting to break the eye contact. The wide smile on her face just appeared without her even realizing it.

I was hangin' out a last night at the top cat when the band slowed down to Merle Man I hit it 'cross the bar room trying to find my baby girl Some drunk tried to punk me, and ask my baby "do you dance" she said "yes I do, but not with you, I'm waitin' on my man" See every dog has it's day dog, when the big dog throws him a bone One moment in the sunshine when your ducks lined up in a row Lucky dog get a big ol' bed, stray dog gets the porch Every dog has it's day dog, but today dog just aint yours!
The evening was turning out much more interesting than he'd really thought it would.
For him, the whole promotional PBR deal tonight was more of a meet and greet than anything and he'd almost decided to skip the whole fiasco. It had only been the last minute prod of his conscious that had gotten him into the shower and into the pickup for the drive. He'd even thought of maybe dropping the bomb on his agent tonight by casually telling him he was done with all the signings for Wrangler and other various sponsors.
That was something he'd been dreading for awhile now. The poor sod just hadn't seemed to take a hint when Ash had begun to draw away from the whole tour issue. The wanderlust that had always rode him in the past had faded now that he'd achieved the rank of All Around Cowboy and a couple PBR Championship buckles. There didn't seem to be much more to prove in that department and his eyes had begun turning to other things.. other challengers to take on.
With a small fortune in the bank all of his own making, Ash found himself wanting to put down some firm roots and build something with his own two hands instead of chasing some neon rainbow or pitting himself against the next rank animal that came along. That in mind, he'd picked up his original dream and written a big check for a piece of land smack dab in the middle of the Big Bend of Texas.
Land that had once belonged to his grandparents. Land that was a piece of the Jordan heritage and that his father had always regretted selling.
There had been a smile on his face the moment he'd handed the check over and he'd been unable to really get it off since. He'd immediately taken up possession and set to making note of things that needed to be done before it would be habitable. Since no one had lived on the place in the last twenty five years or so, the house was falling down but the barns were still in good order. It was going to take alot of work but Ash was looking forward to turning into the place of his fathers childhood once again.
He really couldn't wait for it to be done so he could show his family.
Pulling his thoughts back to the current moment, though, the young cowboy found his attention snagged by the blond across from him and had to laugh at her comment about food. His own menu was open in front of him and he gave a few minutes in serious contemplation of the selections.
"Well, now... It all smells pretty damned good... I think I'll have a medium well rib eye, french fries, an order of potato skins and... some onion rings.... " he drawled out, giving her a smirk before handing the waitress his menu and leaning back in his chair to watch her take up her shots. His brow arched as she took it without even a flinch.
Damn, the woman even drank whiskey like an old timer.
When the waitress turned to look at him, he shook his head politely and then nodded to Savannah. "No shots for me, darlin... but bring her whatever she likes. I'm driving tonight so if you just bring me a regular Bud.. I'm be much obligated."
When the woman nodded and headed off, Ash lifted his hat off his head and set it on his knee before running a hand through the caramel colored strands.
"I hate to say it but ... It happens quiet a bit actually... It comes with the territory when you get to be a big star on the circiut. I could tell you stories that would scare the HELL out of you... I've had women bribe their way into my hotel room before...." he drawled casually before smiling at the waitress who brought his beer. " And a lot of them don't even need encouragement. They just want to have bragging rights of sleeping with a well known name."
Shrugging, he took a drink of hte Bud and then eyed her.
"Interference you say? What exactly do you have in mind, darlin? I'm all ears."

Savannah had asked the waitress to keep the shots coming but also ordered a beer when Ash ordered his. Better to sip the beer slowly in between shots. She didn’t want to get out of hand. But, she definitely needed to take the edge off.
She gave him a crooked little smile as he talked about the things women would do to get close to one of the circuit cowboys. Especially one of Ash’s stature. It didn’t hurt that not only was he a champion, but he was good looking too. Savannah shook her head slightly.
She never did understand that kind of woman that just wanted to sleep with a man to say that she did it. It didn’t make sense to her, they were still just a man like anyone else, right? So, they may be well known but how far was that going to get you? If you had nothing in common, nothing to talk about, no sense of the same values and such, then it was just a meaningless romp in the hay.
Not that Savannah didn’t understand the advantages to a short-term relationship, a fling or whatever you wanted to call it. She’d had a fling or two back in college, but they were never really meaningless to her. They weren’t the end all be all true love either, but there was usually a reason why she ended up with someone, no matter if it was a one night stand or not. And at this point in her life, it just wasn't her thing. She'd rather be alone than just play around.
Sighing a little she took another shot and then settled into drinking her beer. She got a little nervous again when he asked what she had in mind about running interference. Her tongue darted out and slid across her top teeth, then she chewed on her lower lip for a moment.
“Oh… Well… You know. Like tonight. Someone you need run off like that woman Jeanine. I guess that would mean you’d have to have me hanging around a bit. But, I wouldn’t mind.”
As she spoke the waitress came and delivered their food. They had both ordered steaks with all the fixing. It all looked so good her mouth was practically watering. She took another long drink of her beer and sat back until the waitress wandered off again.
“Yeah… I wouldn’t mind getting to know you better. Not sure how you’d feel about that though cowboy. Like I said. I wouldn’t want to put a crimp in your love life if that’s how you like to play it.”
