Vincent shrugged.
"I hear having the ones close to you get hurt sort of comes with the job, doesn't it?" he asked. Ben wasn't the first hunter that Vincent had spoken too, and he probably wouldn't be the last. He'd heard it all from them: the job was thankless; the job would get you killed; the job would be the deaths of the ones you loved. But Vincent didn't have anyone to lose. So, really, it didn't matter to him.
"Besides," he added, "I'm not asking you to make me into a hunter anyway. I just want to learn what I can from you. Anything that might help me understand all of this a little better. I want to know about what sort of things you'd expect out of a safehouse. I want to know what sort of... of cures and medicines I might need, and not the type that you can get at the local drugstore. And yes, there may be times when I have to defend myself, but I don't plan on going out and looking for trouble you know." Smiling, he finished with, "I"m not asking you to turn me into a soldier, Mr. Winchester. I'm only asking you to give me a chance to help people. To help you someday, maybe."

Ben's eye twitched at Vincent's next statement. Dammit, the priest just HAD to be all insightful, as well as philosophical. It took most of his will power to keep his mouth shut against the urge to answer, because hell...it wasn't like anything he said was going to convince this guy to do anything but what he'd set out to do. And, yeah, he couldn't help but have dredge up some grudging respect for the guy. He wanted to help people, so he was coming to those who knew more than him, and he was willing to learn. He had to give him a tip of the metaphorical hat for that.
Though, the hunter couldn't help but feel his shoulders tense up, as he resisted the urge to speak. The guy was a part of today's society; he knew what the world was like, and had probably felt loss, to have said such a thing. But did he really know that in this line of work, one couldn't chance caring for anyone?
Hell, even he'd begun pulling back from the family, as he'd gotten deeper into the job. He knew that others did it- Bastian was dating his sister, gag him, and Ryder was finally seeing someone, after his fiance- but in his experience, everyone was a potential target, especially if they stayed around him for too long. Monsters, rogue hunters, cops who thought his mug belonged to the serial killer that chomped on fourteen virgins back in Kentucky; stepping into his world meant giving up a lot of things that most took for granted. Unless, of course, they wanted to go attend two dozen funerals because they were selfish.
...And hurrah; yet another happy jaunt down the Joyful Bridge. Gah, if only he could throw himself off the damn thing already, before he went hunting for black eye liner.
Ben was silent for a few minutes as he looked at the guy. Finally, another martyred sigh escaped him and he leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. "Well, I can't argue with that," He said, with a wry shake of his head. "God knows I need all the help I can get, most of the time. I can help you with the How-Do's about the monster world, and maybe show you how to defend yourself...but I draw the line at taking you out with me. I don't do strangers at my back; no offense, Father."
A thought came to him, and he tapped a finger on his leg, a thoughtful expression coming onto his face. "As for the rest of that...the safe housing and medicine; I could give a guy a call and see if he could come over and talk to you. His name's Remy Bellafontaine; a Cajun traiteur-turned-Hunter. He deals in all kinds of potion-crap, and could probably talk your ear off about herbs and healing mojo. He doesn't live far from here; you want me to see if he could come down?"

Vincent smiled a bit, and nodded at Ben's words about having a stranger at his back.
"I think I can understand that," the priest agreed. "But yes, anything you can tell me, or show me, would be appreciated. I just want to learn as much as I can, that's all." He could tell that Ben seemed uncomfortable around him, and Vincent felt badly about that, but at the same time, he'd actually found one of these Winchesters that he'd heard so much about... And if the man wouldn't take Vincent under his wing, then the priest figured he still ought to try and learn as much from him as possible.
At the mention of Cajun, Remy, Fr. Belmont nodded immediately.
"I'd love to meet with this man, if you don't think it would be any trouble. If you think he'd actually be willing to speak with me, at any rate."

And, as it turned out, Remy was more than happy to roll down on his motorcycle and give the good Father a lesson on how to care for certain injuries. When the talk started getting into the Cajun's professional area, involving bat bones and special frog piss, Ben felt as if he was no longer needed. Leaving the two to talk, Ben excused himself and headed for the bar.
He had to hand it to the guy; Vincent sure was adamant about jumping into the Hunter-field feet first. Hell...not even the best of people could sit there and listen to the traiteur ramble on about crushing turtle eggs for helping in exorcisms with a straight face. But, then again, the guy was new to the gig; he'd learn that there was nothing better than a cold heart and a fully loaded .45.
A twinge of sadness poked at his chest at the thought. Once upon a time, he'd looked upon his father's choice of profession and had thought the elder Winchester a hero. Someone in a leather cape that fought monsters and saved the day. But now that he was in the thick of things and taking up the family business for himself? He definitely knew better; all a Hunter had to look forward to was dirty lies and even dirtier consciences.
A quick swig of his beer and a flash of skin had him forcing his mind back to the present. Bah, he didn't have time to dwell on any of that! There was a fledgling Hunter to show the ropes, booze to make disappear and a hot blond down the bar to flirt with until the cows came home. The night was young, and tomorrow could damn well wait.
They were all on the highway to Hell, after all.

Vincent was exhausted.
He and Remy had stayed and talked until the bar keeper had finally tossed them out, where they'd then exchanged numbers on the street and went their separate ways. Vincent had promised to contact the Cajun again when he actually had his safe house set up, to invite him in to help square away all of the various "special" remedies that would be needed when the time came. And, the priest had to admit, there was still a lot more that he needed to learn.
All in all, though, Vincent had to admit that he'd probably learned more in the couple of hours he and Remy had spoke than he'd learned on his entire journey so far. The strange man was a fount of information, and Vincent had picked his brain for every little detail he could get. Much of what he'd learned would take a few days to process, as it still sounded far-fetched despite his newfound open-mindedness.
Still, as wandered off down the street in the direction of the church that he was staying at, the priest wondered if he'd ever truly get used to all of this.
He wondered if he really wanted to at all...
