Prim nodded, altering her course slightly to follow behind him instead head off to the left and towards the cemetery that way. She said nothing of his comment about carrying the stuff they needed, the answer she figured given enough in the small fact she was indeed following him. She was even in fact trying to meet his strides and stepping where he was stepping for a moment, realising then perhaps that his feet were as large as his strides were long – she was practically jumping form step to step. She only stopped when he pointed out his car. Looking up, she paused and took in the sleek lines of his car, and smiled a little. She knew nothing of engines or makes – she couldn’t drive and had never really thought about learning too either when everywhere in New York was so easily acceptable through public transport – but she liked the look of the car at least.
”Nice.” She smiled, watching talon as he moved round to the driver’s side, before following herself and darting round to the passenger, her eyes following the black accents as she moved. He was already in by the time she opened her door, slipping into the leather seat quietly, reaming as such whilst the drove. She watched out of the window as the scenery moved past, her eyes tracking objects until they disappeared and darting back to track another. It almost looked like she was watching a tennis match, until her eyes trained on something a little further away, a tall building, and she followed that until he stopped.
Nodding, she watched as he got out of the car and disappeared behind her, twisting her head slightly as her fingers played with the belt strapped across her lap, scratching her nail lightly along the surface. She was cold now, and part of her wished she had at least picked up her hate before venturing back out into the night with just her vest on. She shivered once, as if someone had walked over her grace and slipped a lock of hair from behind her ear, chewing on the strands. She went back to watching the scenery out of the window, but jumped a little when the small phone landed in her lap.
”Okay”She smiled timidly, and started pressing the buttons that made the small screen come to life, searching the web to see if the cemetery had a website or something. She didn’t know what was up with her now, perhaps it was the impending task, perhaps it was being in the car with Talon on her own, or maybe because now she had a few minutes alone with her thoughts to think the nights events were beginning to catch up with her, but right then it felt like a pit of snake were writhing in her chest and Primrose Thatcher felt a little sick. ”Oh-kay”She murmured after a moment, glancing up and across at Talon as he drove. ”It says that the oldest graves are towards the centre of the cemetery, and the get newer as it goes out, like in rings? Like, the oldest is that really big angel over there?” She pointed through the window at the faint outline of an angel several hundred yards in front of them, obscured by the thin veil of mist. ”So... I guess it will be near there?”

Prim lingered in the car for a moment after Talon had cut the engine, after he had stepped from its leather interior and back out into the night. Still slightly puzzled as to why they need shovels, it was begging to dawn on her of course that they would be digging something up – she just hoped they weren’t about to unearth the long buried bones of a father and his son. Still, she held little faith in her hope becoming realised, and it was with more than a slight trepidation that she pushed open the car door and stepped out into the darkness.
Like most girls in her situation, Prim Immediately wished she had changed from her low heels into trainers – not through fear of ruining the old boots, but mostly because the ground beneath her was not exactly frozen solid, and was collecting moisture from the slowly developing fog now licking at her ankles, but because if she wasn’t careful, she would sink. Ignoring it, and deciding there were far worse things in this world than the problem of sinking books, she closed the door behind her softly; the last thing she wanted to do was hurt the man/boys pride by slamming it. She got the feeling he was fond of the car in the very least, and he had... well. He had helped her out when she needed it.
Prim took the torch from him with a small nod, clicking it on and walking with him, swinging the beam across the headstones. She was happy with the silence for now, the cold raising Goosebumps on her bare arms. Crossing her free arm across her chest, she rubbed absently at her skin, using the friction to gain a little warmth, distracting herself a second and not realising he had asked her a question.
Letting the lock of hair fall from her mouth – one she had not realised she had even been chewing; she glanced across at him, though quickly turned her eyes back to the graves. They were getting closer to the right date at least. ”Yeah”She nodded, taking practically two steps to each of his long strides. ” I mean... this is all a bit Surreal. I can’t help but wonder if imma wake up in a minute.” She glanced across at him again. ”Is... Is this what you do all the time?”

”I dunno... it’s just... weird. It’s gonna take me a little time to get used to it I think”Prim shrugged and continued to walk with him, being careful where she placed her feet and walking, as much as she dared, on her tiptoes to avoid sinking into the earth and falling flat on her face. Or worse, into someone’s gravestone. She shivered slightly as she recalled the little boys face, and wiped at the cuts on her skin. It was going to take her more than a little while to grow used to the idea of ghosts being reality, but as far as they went she had always been somewhat open-minded so far as.,.. well no one had proved they didn’t exist right? If anything, the trouble lay in the reality that they could hurt you, if anything she had always been led to believe they were benign, indifferent.
If only Prim knew that, in the following months after this first, or rather, second encounter with the supernatural, there would be much more to fear and worry about other than just the ghosts of tonight.
Paying little attention to the gravestones, and more to where she placed her feet, the young woman led the flashlight trail over the worn marble and sandstone gravestones almost of its own accord, glancing up from time to time and looking around. She chewed her lip and scared herself, imagining things walking around just beyond her the reach of the torch in her hand – what had happened to the times when she had found graveyards peaceful places, places she could sit and think and spill her woes and thoughts to the ever listening ears of the dead, safe in the knowledge that they would always hear and be there even if they could never offer advice or words in return.
Doing as he asked, prim paused in her steps and shone the light where he directed, glancing around herself and wetting her lips with a quick flick of her tongue whilst she waited for him to check the grave. She was surprised when he handed her the coat however, but took the jacket from him anyway, transferring the light as she slipped her arms through the sleeves. The material hung from her small frame, but she immediately felt warmer, glad for the barrier against the cool night air.
At his words, she balanced the torch on the graves and picked up the other shovel, sticking it into the earth, and realising quite quickly that this was going to be harder, and longer, than they made it appear in the movies. ”Fingers crossed”She smiled, but the pressure of the graveyard and the fog around her boots made the smile forced, and she was glad that their features were obscured by the darkness. At least she sounded a lot more relaxed than she actually felt.
By the time the spade hit the lid of the first coffin, prim was more than glad to hear the loud thud reverberate through the wood and up into her arms. The hole was deep enough so that she could no longer see over the rim, and sweat caused the curls of her fringe to stick to her forehead, curls she now wiped away with the back of her hand as she leant against the wall of the hole. Having put his jacket on the gravestone earlier when it had started to get too warm with it on, Prim was glad for the cool air that she had once used it to combat.
”Okay, Now what?”She asked, looking over at the man/boy.

Prim swallowed as he manhandled one of the skulls, and found herself unable to comment for a second even as he scrambled free. She couldn’t help but wonder then how long he had been doing this, not for the first time tonight. They were bones, but Prim was still creeped out by them, and as far as actually touching them with bare hands? She might have done it, if she absolutely needed too, but she was pretty sure she would have then kept her digits submerged in antiseptic for several hours.
Or maybe it was just a guy thing.
Any dirt that already clung to her skin and clothes was rudimentary by the time Prim scrambled up the side of the hole after talon. Despite being a climber, the girl had heels on, and her arms already felt weak from the near three hours of digging. If Talon hadn’t been there to pull her out, the only way she would have been getting out of there before anyone came along to find out just exactly why she had felt the need to dig the old grave, would have been to hack steps into the side of the ditch. Given that the shovels were already up and out, that would have taken a very long time. It was with breathed thanks that she scrambled over the lip of the hole and out of the dirt.
Once more on the grass, Prim looked down at her clothes with a frown, and stuck her tongue out at the man/boy in indignation for his comment whilst trying to get the large clumps free from her skin. Unfortunately, thanks to the sweat their labour had induced, and the dampness of the cool morning, most of it just smeared and she soon gave up, resigning herself to a long bath before she crawled into bed tonight. Or this morning. What time was it anyway? The girl had no idea, she had left the store at half ten to walk home, which meant that indeed it would have been the early hours. She opened her mouth to ask when she saw him messing with a lighter and some sticks.
Scrambling backwards from the edge of the pit as the bones went up, Prim tripped over the shovels and landed hard on the grass, twisting her ankle in the process. She didn’t stop squirming away until she could no longer see the flames, only the golden glow they cast. Scooping back her hair in her hands and managing to drag dirt through the golden strands in the process, Prim recalled the words of her therapist, banished the smell and sight of flames from her memory and took a few calming breaths. It took a moment, but the terror that gripped her chest subsided, and Prim felt less and less like she was about to have a heart attack, less and less like being back in that house. It was the same reaction she had to all flames, and the sole reason she did not have candles.
She remained on the ground a moment and looked over at Talon, and tried a shaky smile. ”Could have warned me you were setting them alight.”She told him, letting go of her hair so once more it fell around her shoulders. Another deep breath, and Prim got shakily to her feet. ”So, Is that it now? It’s over, right?” She asked him, making sure to keep her eyes on him, rather than the apparent inferno just behind.
