Prim rolled her eyes at his mock pain, leaning back a little on her bar stool, her chin still resting on the curve of her knee – a movement of her eyes that was quickly repeated when he started on about how he would never forget to give her his number. She knew him too well for that matter– she knew how forgetful he could be, how easily he could get sidetracked by the pretty blonde with the big breasts in the corner, and she knew the sort of trouble he might find himself in that would give him reason enough to forget to text her his new number. So, for those reasons, or rather, the last one anyway, she might be able to forgive him if he sucked up a bit. The other two maybe not so much.
She was mildly surprised that he hadn’t released her hand, and was somewhat amused by the warmth of his skin. There were few people who could get away with things like that, mostly because there were few people who wanted to get close enough to her do it – and didn’t mean in proximity. In fact, she could probably tick them off on her fingers, these few people, there was Leo of course (who still had hold of her hand, by the way) and then there was Amelie, the little redheaded girl at the orphanage who had so often stole away into Prims bed at night just to be close to the older girl. Amelie was soon becoming one of the other lifers at the orphanage, to the point where Prim, had she been older and out of university was close to fostering the sweet little girl with the red wine birthmark and a sock bunny called Charles, herself. But for now at least, Prim barely had enough money to cover her rent and bills, let alone feed another little mouth.
Prim listened to his explanation, and grinned a little. Well, that wouldn’t do. She dug her nails into his knee very gently, just to make sure that he was still paying attention and hadn’t been sidetracked by the blonde bombshell that had just walked in, and became quite animated as she spoke to him next. ”A motel? Leo Barone in a motel? Since when did you live in motels?”She asked him, half teasing, but her eyes lighting up with the idea she was about to relay. ”Why don’t you come stay with me? I mean, it’ll save you money in the long run ”Not saying the blonde haired young man before her needed to save money, or that he had to take himself to slum it with Prim – she was pretty sure he could find a new place to sleep every night simple by hanging out in a bar for long enough with that cheeky smile and unfailing sense of humour of his.
”I mean, it’s only a small little apartment, it has hardly any furniture and I haven’t finished unpacking yet, but it’s not far from here and I can keep an eye on you – make sure you don’t disappear any time soon ”She grinned, a cheeky little wink causing her eyelashes to cast a brief shadow on her cheekbone. She pulled her hand away from his knee and used it to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear – Amelie had decided Prim needed a hair cut a few weeks ago, and the lock of hair was yet to re-grow to normal length – and chewed her lip. ”Like, don’t feel pressured or anything” She was backtracking – though Leo was her best friend, they had hardly stayed over at each other’s houses (except for the time she had passed out on his couch after that time he had dragged her clubbing) and what she had just said was starting to make her feel a little nervous. ”But, umm.. the offers there.”

At the slight pain in his knee, Leo allowed his attention to be dragged back to Prim. It was kind of strange; how his brain immediately compared her to the woman smiling at him down the bar. The stranger was…hell, man, she was gorgeous! With those platinum locks and come hither smile. A night with her would be a night of pure, carnal bliss that he wouldn’t forget for weeks to come.
…And yet, instead of excusing himself to go chase her down, he found himself captivated by her friend’s easy smile. Looking from the blond woman behind him to his best friend, the former seemed fake, somehow. Almost deformed.
Fuck, he must have been coming down with a cold; thinking of Prim like that. She was his best friend, for God sakes! Even if he was attracted to her- not going there, not going there- he couldn’t act on it. Every single time he got into bed with a woman, it was like a switch was flipped. Any and all feelings that he might have had for them- lust, amusement, friendliness…ANYTHING- just seemed to fade away. He got bored of them, ignored their calls and texts; cut them out of his life as if the one little act were some concluding chapter in his life’s story.
He couldn’t lose Prim; she was his only friend. His only connection to a life that he’d been forced to leave behind, thanks to foolish mistakes made in his youth. And…well, hell, she was the best person he knew. Without the knowledge that she was in his corner, what did he have? A life full of one night stands.
Huh…actually, that sounded pretty good, he thought absently. But it didn’t change the fact that Prim was his only real friend. He had to keep her at arm’s length.
”What? There’s nothing wrong with a motel,” He said with a grin, pausing to take a sip of his beer. ”It’s cheap, it’s relatively comfy and a maid comes and cleans up after me. What more could I ask for?”
He was ready to say more; to go on praising the local motels in the area, but the words were lost in his throat. Surprised, he could only stare at her for a minute. Live…with her? Seriously?
”God, Prim…I didn’t mean to put you in that situation when I mentioned motels,” He said, a bit contritely. ”Hell, I’d probably drive you crazy in less than a week. But…God, girl, I’d owe you big time!”
Before he could think better of it, Leo leaned forward and pulled her into a hug. It was a bit awkward, given that he tried to make sure neither of them fell off their stool, but he managed. After giving her a good squeeze and a kiss on the cheek, he pulled back. ”It’d only be until I find my own place, I swear. And I can pick up half the rent, too.”

Was Prim Thatcher In love with Leo Barone? Possibly. Was this love anything more than the platonic love many people have for their best friends, the closest people in their lives? Oh, it could definitely, and easily grow into more than that, But whether Prim would ever let it happen, whether she would ever admit it to herself, was a completely different story. If she ever started feeling that way... well. She knew what he was like, knew all the girls in high school who had come up to her afterwards, asking about him, why he hadn’t called them – no. In this case it was easier to simply deny all knowledge, hide it away, and carry on as normal. After all, the girl had been lonely for the greatest part of her existence, it was no hardship to continue as such if it meant she could keep this man in her life.
So really it was a good thing the both of them had decided, if only to themselves, that their easy friendship was the best place for this relationship to remain. Even if she did get a little thrill from the peck on her cheek and the feel of his embrace – woah girl. Don’t go there. She’d done this to herself once before, back in high school. She had harboured the world’s biggest crush on the boy with the spikey blonde hair and the cute dimples in his cheeks.
Yes, It was best not to go there again... and here she was offering to live with him. Well, no one had said that it was easy to just forget those little niggling feelings, did they?
Prim Leant back in her stool slightly, her face haven broken into an easy going smile. ”Good – that’s settled then. You can stay with me, though really, don’t worry about the rent it’s fine. I mean, what are friends for? But i’m telling you now, you bring girls back, i don’t wanna see their bra’s draped over my couch. And i’m not cleaning up your boxers.” She was teasing him of course, with her easy smile and a sparkle in her azure eyes – hell she even met his gaze for a second- as she went back to tracing the cup mark on the bench next to her.
”Right” She grinned, and slipped from the stool back to the floor, tugging down her shirt as she went as the material had ridden up a little. ”Finnish your beer Mr. I wanna finish some stuff up at home anyway, so there’s no time like the present.”She put a hand on his knee again, for a fleeting moment, before turning and heading back to where she had been sat before to lean over the table (much to the amusement of the guy playing pool behind her as he got to oggle her for a moment) and grab her bag and cardigan, pulling the thick wool over her arms. It would be dark out by now for sure, and with the night came the cold. Slipping the bag strap over her shoulder, she was soon back by Leo’s side. ”Ready when you are.”

Hot damn…had she just met his eyes? Surprise flashed onto his face as, for the first time in a long time, those soulful green eyes flashed up to his own. Though it only lasted for a few seconds, the hood felt like he was looking right smack into the clearest emerald he’d ever seen. For a minute there, it seemed as if all the air the room had been sucked out, and one of the schmucks from outside had managed to knee him in the balls again. She was…beautiful.
And he was a friggin’ asshat who was just WAITING to end the best relationship of his life. Fuck, remember the ‘keep her as a friend’ thing! Don’t start thinking about how much he wanted to be the one person she’d look at in the eyes! Or how much those long lashes made them pop really nicely…GAH.
He was relieved to be able to laugh at her next comment. For some reason, the image of his boxers lying around on her couch made his cheeks heat up, and he shifted a bit uncomfortably in his seat. He’d probably start wearing ten pairs of underwear while staying with her…oh, happy day.
”Aw, c’mon…my house cleaning skills aren’t THAT bad,” He snorted. Then he paused, remembering his room in his apartment in Brooklyn. A rueful expression came onto his face as he acknowledged what she said was probably true…not that he’d admit it out loud. If there was one thing he’d learned over the years, it was definitely never to let a woman know she was right.
He already got nagged on enough from the guys he still kept in touch with. Given Prim’s history with him, who knew what kind of jokes she could come up with? She knew about his secret tattoo and all…
With a nod and a muttered ‘yes ma’am,’ Leo turned to his drink and took a few last chugs. The liquor felt good on his suddenly dry throat, and he watched his friend move around the bar out of the corner of his eye. He could feel the other woman down the bar’s eyes on him, and the temptation to turn around and flirt was almost too much to resist. If he couldn’t give into those strange, unfamiliar feelings he had toward his friend, why not lose himself in lust for a stranger?
But, before he could make a decision, she returned. Sliding off of his stool, he put down a five onto the beer counter and slid an arm around her waist. ”Lead on, oh fearless leader!” He said with a wide grin on his face. Leading her toward the door, he shouldered it open, then motioned for her to proceed him.
”You don’t have roommates or anything, do you? Maybe a cat I should know about, so I can prepare myself with Benadryl?”

”Nope. No Roommates, neither of the human kind or the furry kind. Just me.... and now i guess... you ” She grinned at him, glancing sideways as she snaked her arm through his and walked with him back past the various bars and shops towards her apartment. It wasn’t so much a long walk as it was short, but the time passed quicker than normal thanks to their bantered conversation.
Before long, prim was rooting through her bag; stopping outside the doors to an apartment building that didn’t look so bad in the night, and made her glad really that she wasn’t showing him the building in the full glory of daylight. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of the small apartment – it held a rustic charm in its architecture that prim had fallen in love with – she just knew how men had the tendency to see past the charm and straight at the cracks in the foundation and the broken windows on the first floor. Ah well. Rustic nightly charm it was then.
She left the loop of his arm to let them into the apartment, nudging the door open with her foot, finishing her sentence and she started up the stairs to her sixth floor apartment. ”- So, it’s not much and stuff, but at least you have a bed. Just mind the boxes... i haven’t finished unpacking yet...”And with that, Prim pushed open the beat up old door to her apartment and flicked on the light, showing off her investment in all its glory. She moved towards the centre of the room and grinned, spreading out her arms. ”So what you think? This is the living room, through there’s the kitchen, my room... and I guess yours ”She smiled, motioning with her hands as she pointed out each room, grinning like the fool she truly was. Let’s face it, the girl was a bit giddy, seen as much in the way she span in the spot for a second and then fell on the couch.
Yeh, just because he was moving in, didn’t mean she was going to start feeling awkward about the whole thing, and she would curse him if he hung around in the doorway like an idiot too – she didn’t work that way, and she was pretty sure he didn’t either. ”So, just make yourself at home,”She smiled over the back of the chair at him as she pulled of her shoes. ”And how do you feel about Indian? Or Mexican?”

It really was bad that the only thing that came to Leo’s mind when she said she had no roommates, was the image of her beckoning to him from her bed. First off, he had no idea what her bed looked like, and if she’d even have such a huge, canopied things with mirrors…and secondly, it was just WRONG. There was no way in hell that he was going to think about how happy he was to know that he wouldn’t have to worry about a roommate catching him skulking around. Or the fact that there would be no one giving him strange looks when they caught him outside of Prim’s room.
…Because he wouldn’t be anywhere NEAR Prim’s room! Holy crap, when had he become a freaking perv? Okay, deep breaths, Leo; you’re obviously losing your freaking mind. Good Lord.
”I hope you’re taking the right precautions, living alone,” He said finally, after a minute of clearing his throat. Yeesh, he was freaking insane; that was the endgame, here. ”Not that you need them now. I dunno if you’ve noticed, but I’ve definitely buffed out. Been goin’ to the gym lately and everything,”
With his free arm, he made a show of flexing his ‘buff’ biceps, giving her one of his patented goofy grins. Hugging her close to his side, he couldn’t help but enjoy the feeling of such easy conversation that flew between them. She was the only person he felt he didn’t need to lie to; he could tell her whatever came into her mind, and she would understand. For a few seconds, he was tempted to tell her about his new life and the magic that lived inside him. It hadn’t been something he’d been aware of in high school, but for the past few years, living as a magical object vibrator had changed his style like crazy. Would she notice? Would she think he was crazy if he pointed it out?
Probably. She already thought of him as a horn dog; he didn’t need her giving him google eyes and kicking him out of her apartment.
When they reached her building, Leo made a show of whistling in appreciation. Almost as giddily as she, he followed her up the stairs. He eyed the hallways and other apartments around him, making note of whatever faces went though whatever doorway out of pure habit. A guy in his profession always had to know which twitchy stranger might bring the cops into the building, after all. And given that Prim was a girl and would be going in and out of the building alone sometimes, he wanted to know who was around and who might pose a threat.
Once inside, he closed the door behind him and put his hands on his hips. He turned in a slow circle, taking in everything, then grinned down at Prim when she plopped down onto her couch. ”This’ a nice place, Primmy!” He said, moving to sit next to her. ”Very nice. You’re not doing too bad for yourself…I’m proud of you. Now, order me some Mexican. Roomie.”
He gave her a nudge then leaned back, crossing his arms behind his head. Oh yeah, this was gonna work out perfectly.
