Oh, freaking awesome, he’d just made himself out to be the Hermetic Serial Killer. ‘I clean my guns?’ Seriously? Man, he’d been hiding out in Paranoia Land for the past freaking five years, but that didn’t mean he’d lost ALL of his goddamn social skills. He just wasn’t used to talking to beautiful women, that’s all. His inner voice practically rolled its eyes at that, and Logan resisted the urge to slam down his pool cue and stalk over to the nearest dark corner.
Hearing footsteps approaching, Logan chanced a glance up at her, expecting to see that pretty ass swaying toward the bar, as fast as it could go. He blinked in surprise when he realized that she’d not only chosen the opposite direction, but had seemed to take his comment in stride. Good Lord, she was even grinning! A faint blush heated his cheeks and he forced a frown on his face, lest he return the favor and start grinning like a fool.
”What kind of bar this is?” He repeated, giving her a covert once over. Damn, she knew about the bar’s reputation for catering to Hunters, did she? Was she a hunter? She definitely didn’t have the body type for it…and before he could stop himself, he found his eyeballs glued to those shapely legs. Nope, definitel\y not the body for hunting. ”So…you’re in the know. I always like to play dumb, in case I’m talking to a civvy. Excuse me if I’ve offended you.”
Falling back on politeness, as years in the military had trained him to do, he leaned on his pool cue and met her eyes with a raised brow. There was curiosity in his gaze, then a flash of surprise when she admitted her…extra-curricular activities. Sure, the bar was hopping with the ignorant types and fellow Hunters who obviously didn’t have a problem with the feisty blond…but was it a good idea to go and admit her ‘category’ to a complete stranger? For all she knew, he could be some kind of freak-fanatic, who’d shoot her full of holes for such an admission. For a minute there, he was even half tempted to reach for his gun and show her how stupid that move was. Always the teacher; that was Logan Moretti.
But instead, he merely watched her, resting his chin on scarred knuckles. She seemed to be daring him to leave- or to stay; he couldn’t tell which- and the way she seemed to emphasize her nonchalance bellied the tense set of her shoulders. She wanted him to stay, and yet, she’d thrown out a deal breaker that she had to have known would send any true Hunter to his armory. A glance over her shoulder gave him a clear view of Curse’s almost threatening glance and another showed him Ben’s easy grin, as he glanced from Shane’s backside, to Logan’s face.
God, but that little voice in the back of his head was screaming. She was a witch, a woman, an UKNOWN. She could easily fool him into thinking she was one of the good guys, then turn around and stab him in the back. So many had done the same in the past…he couldn’t risk it, any of it. No connections and no looking back; that was his motto. He had acquaintances and business partners; people that he could use in a fight, like Ben. But nothing more. His already shattered mind couldn’t handle it.
And yet, he was tired of the game. So, he stayed.
With a lazy roll of his shoulders, the Hunter turned to survey the table. Moving slowly, he lined up his shot and spoke without taking his eye off the white ball. ”I doubt you’re a ‘scared little female,’ Shane. If anything, you strike me as a very capable young woman,” He drawled, watching as the colored ball shot into a corner pocket. ”But I’m gonna give you the same disclaimer I give everyone. Don’t fuck with me, and I won’t tear you to pieces.”
Another shot was a miss, and he straightened to look into her eyes with an intensity that usually sent most people running.
”Do we have an understanding?”

As far as lines went.. the man certainly needed to work on putting some charm and effort into things. Luckily though, Shane wasn't a woman to take offense just because a man got a bit grouchy. She'd been around the block enough to know that to men like Logan? It was just second nature and you either took it with a grain of salt.. Or you might as well walk away before the conversation even started.
And Shane had never been one to take the easy way out of anything.
So, instead of packing it up and telling the man where he could stick his threats in a politicially incorrect manner, the blond haired beauty simply smiled at him before leaning over and plowing another shot right into the left hand pocket. As it fell, leaving only the eight ball on the table for her to sink, she leveled him with a look that was calm, cool and completely devoid of any fear.
“Oh, your right about that... I'm anything but helpless. I've been around the block a few times and I have no misconceptions about what the world is truly like.” she drawled back, arching a brow coolly. “Nor am I scared of threats.... You might say I had that beaten out of me at an early age and i've just never developed a proper appreciation for them.”
Giving him a moment to digest that, Shane leaned over the table once more and took her own sweet time lining up her final shot. Raising her eyes to his, she smiled wickedly and then slammed the pool cue forward in a sharp slice that sent the eight ball spinning neatly into the right pocket. As the heavy thud resounded, the pretty blond straightened and then cocked a hip. One slender hand went to rest on the table as she arched a brow and tilted her head.
“And as far as fucking with you?? I'm afraid that I can't promise that.... You see... I never make a vow I can't keep and seeing as how I fully intend on doing just that.... Well, taking you to bed, anyways...What we do there is up to you.... I don't think that we can be in agreement on that.”
Then, turning away with a feminine grace, Shane laid the pool cue on the table, gave him a wink and headed for the bar. So what if she intentionally put an extra sway to her hips? So what if she mentally wondered if she'd just bitten off more than she could chew? For some strange reason, she felt exhilarated by the danger of pulling the tigers tale and not even her instincts could keep her from casting a look back over her shoulder to take in his expression.
“Now, care to buy a lady a drink or do I have to con your friend over there into it??”

Well…damn. There really wasn’t anything hotter than a woman who looked into crazy and was unfazed by it. For a second there, Logan was a bit taken aback by the lack of reaction in the witch’s face, when he finally glanced up to look at her. His little ‘threat’ had been kind of generic; the one without descriptions that he used around strangers he didn’t want to piss off too badly. For anyone else, he would have turned around and pointed his pool cue at her throat while describing all the bloody things he could do to her, if she ever spelled him in any way. Hell, he would have LEFT, if it were anyone else. If Shane were instead Shawn; some big, burly dude who was looking to score some cash from the old guy sulking in the corner. He would never have allowed himself to associate with an unknown; forget with a witch.
But she wasn’t a burly guy with bad attitude and he wasn’t leaving. Call him suicidal, but he’d read nothing dangerous about the girl- except for the obvious- and had somehow managed to ignore the little voice in the back of his head, warning him about impending attempts on his life. For Chrissakes, if anything, not EVERYONE wanted to kill him, right? He wasn’t that frikken important, or that damn dangerous.
His ego whined, and he mentally pet it with a sigh. He wasn’t completely that damn dangerous.
When she finally spoke, the Hunter couldn’t help a flash of surprise from sliding onto his face briefly. When the winning shot was sunk, he put his cue down on the table and watched her solemnly. It was strange, but he felt a little tingle of anger over the ‘beaten out of her’ part of that little rant. The fact that someone would hit such a beautiful, free spirited girl…it was unthinkable.
Then again, with his family history, he should hardly be surprised. Had he ever seen his father without having to ‘kiss’ his backhand? If he had, he didn’t remember it.
…And then, he couldn’t remember much of anything, when she started talking about taking him to bed. Surprise was really uncharacteristic of him, given that he expected the worst in people…but right then, he just knew that his entire face was the definition of ‘whaaaat?!’
Speechless, he watched her saunter off, his jaw hanging open. When she turned to dare him to buy her a drink, he found that he was rooted to the spot; having no idea what to do, how to react…or how to take the fact that he was suddenly wondering if Curse would give up his back room for a little bit. Good Lord, she was just a flirty woman! She didn’t mean what she said, and anyway, he would never give in. She was a child! A witch!
So fucking hot…
A scowl ate at his lips as he stomped forward, suddenly turned on, angry and embarrassed at the same time. Damn, but his brain was liable to explode at some point, if she kept up this realm of teasing. Maybe he should have admitted to being isolated for the past half a decade in his little ‘hello’ speech; she might have been a bit less forthright, if she knew.
Giving Ben a ‘speak and you DIE’ glare that the other Hunter seemed to take in stride, Logan slid onto an empty booth and swung his death stare over to the guy sitting to his side. The man was obviously surprised to see such an expression turned his way, and with a sound of fear, quickly vacated his seat. Feeling a bit less irritated now, he pulled the stool out with his foot and motioned for her to sit.
”Curse,” He said by way of greeting. He didn’t like how the elder Jordan was looking at him, and felt his scowl deepen. ”Gimme a bourbon and two shot glasses.”
That said, he turned back to Shane, face rearranged back into its seemingly ‘normal’ crotchety mask. ”So, you gonna keep daring me to do shit, or what? ‘Cause I only have a few lives left, and I have a feeling that one of your ‘challenges’ might end up killing me.”

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ?
She was so very bad.
Shane knew she was yanking the dudes chain but really? What did he expect her to do? Squeek and run for the nearest hiddy hole? She had a feeling he got enough of that on an every day bases so she didn't feel any need to pretend to fear him. It had been a long time since anything had truly interested her and for some reason.. This crotchety old man did. OK, so he wasn't THAT old and she didn't see him that way but... The fellow really needed to lighten up and realize that there was more to life than just barking at everyone and thinking the worst. A bit of fun never hurt anyone and what good was living if you didn't at least enjoy yourself once in awhile?
Yup. the dude was just entirely to intense for his own good. It made her wonder though just what other avenues that energy could be directed towards and if he'd put the same effort into it as he did this. Temptation.. It was a real bitch at times.
Unable to hide her grin as Logan answered her challenge, Shane slid into the seat he offered and crossed her long legs. Since he'd ordered them drinks, she waited as Curse approached and slide a bottle and two shot glasses across the counter. The look he gave the both of them made Shane feel like a wayward child but she coolly lifted a brow at the man until he grumbled and walked away. Only then did she turn her dancing blue eyes to her companion and answer his question.
"Hmmmmm.. To be honest, I haven't thought this through that far, McGruffy. I'm more the "fly by the seat of my pants" kinda girl... Besides, even if one of my challenges killed you, I promise you'd die a happy man." she drawled out in her soft, southern accent. "I don't believe in limiting myself to only certain outcomes. Its so much funner to just go with the flow and see where it leads you...."
Picking up the bottle, she poured them both a shot and then raised her glass to him in a pretty salute.
"Heres to new.... Adventures."
Then, with a swift motion, she tossed it back and closed her eyes, savoring the burn. When her fair lashes opened once more, there was more than a hint of wicked amusement there.
"So.. tell me, Logan.... Are you normally so growlly or am I just the lucky lady of the night? I'm curious because you intrigue me for some reason that I can't quiet put my finger on. You kind of remind me of a cross between a wild animal whos been cornered one to many times and a gentleman who doesn't quiet know what to make of me. Should I be worried that you might bit at any moment or is that part of your... charm?"
Twirling her finger around the rim of the shot glass, she tilted her fair head and met his gaze with a suddenly serious expression.
"And for the record, in case your wondering, I'm a "Mean what you say, Say what you mean." sort of girl. I never lie and I never beat around the bush. I might tease and kid but I believe in letting a person know exactly where they stand with me so your growliness isn't going to work on me. I've met and heard far worse."

Damn, but the proprietor could definitely give glares when he really wanted to. When Curse had turned his hairy eyeball on Logan, the Hunter seemed taken aback. There was a warning in his face, and that damned paranoid voice in the back of his head started screaming. What was that look for? Was he being warned about Shane? Or was Shane being warned about him? What did Curse think; that he was some raving lunatic who would slit her throat if she pushed him too hard?
…Okay, so he wasn’t going to think real hard about that last one, lest he get into that suicidal mindset again, but…damn, he hated it when people tried to be covert! It always made him twitchy; even when he was sane and living in the normal world.
Rolling his shoulders, Logan forced his mind back to the present when she started speaking again. Damn, but she had a sweet voice; so throaty and seductive. If Fitzgerald could hear it, he’d forget the money thing and go with simple ‘sex’ instead…and damn if the thought didn’t make his happy place twitch. Fuckin’ libido was gonna get him a ten inch heel up his craggy ass if he wasn’t careful. But…dammit, Lo; stop playing with yourself and listen…she WAS talking to him…
Surprise had him raising his brow. ‘McGruffy?’ Did he really look like a man who liked nicknames? He shifted a bit, then dipped his head and shook it slowly. Why did he suddenly feel like laughing? ”’Just go with the flow…’” He repeated, after lifting his glass to her and downing the shot. ”That’s just about as foreign a concept to me as anything.”
Falling silent as she started speaking, he wondered why bemusement was the only thing that he was feeling. Usually, he couldn’t hang around people he hardly knew; they spoke too much and he could give a damn about ‘polite conversation.’ He supposed that he’d call this one a fluke of nature, and settled forward onto his elbows as he looked sideways at her. He took a minute, making a show of considering her question while an amused light came into his eyes.
”Well, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear, coming into Curse’s tonight,” He said dryly. ”The fact that you see me as an animal with sharp teeth. Honestly, Shane- since you just said you value honesty- I’m not a people person. I used to be, but…that was a long time ago. I’m happy to hear that you aren’t afraid of my gruffness, but to defend myself, it’s been a while since I’ve had a night out. I…don’t get out much.”
A bit uncomfortable now, he shifted a bit and took another shot of the whiskey that was provided for him. ”What about you? You always been this…open to complete strangers?”

How long had it been since Shane had just sat down with a man just for her own pleasure? To actually converse because she wanted to and not because it was part of the job? She couldn't honestly NAME a time in the last year. Didn't that just make her feel like a sad individual.
Shaking her head a bit, the petite blond caught the look Curse was sending her companion and frowned. Narrowing her eyes at the older hunter, she let her exasperation shine through and was happy to see him raise his hands and back off. He wasn't her damned father after all and although she appreciated him watching out for her... She didnt' think this was one of those times he needed to worry. If she had the right bead on this guy, he wasn't going to try anything stupid and if he did.. well, they'd cross that bridge when it happened.
Pouring another shot into her empty glass, Shane lifted it to her lips and then paused half way there at his question. A cynical smile played around her eyes as she arched a brow. Her tone was cool and collected even while the response she expected was clear.
“Actually....I dance at The Wolfs Den so conversation is part of the game. As far as open? Not hardly.. My job is to let the men talk about themselves and basically be an unpaid shrink. Thankfully, my boss is a hard ass and all the girls there are clean cut, higher class dancers so we don't normally get the rude propositions that some of the lower class clubs get.” she said with a slight shrug, wondering how his reaction to her revelation would go. “However, its made me value honesty a lot more and I tend to be quiet frank in my interactions.... I don't have time for a lot of bullshit and I certainly don't want to waste what time I do have one it.”
Taking a sip from her glass, she eyed him over the rim and then leaned forward.
“As far as you not being a people person? Thats all right... I'm all for blowing this joint and finding someplace a bit more quiet. Nights out on the town are overrated, I think.... Now, going for a midnight swim..... or maybe racing my bike down a quiet highway..... Thats my kind of night out.....” she said with a grin and wink. “To many people around tend to spoil the mood, don't you think?”

Huh, well color him surprised at the turn of conversation. Usually, in his experience at least, women tended to come in one of two packages; the crazies, who put their sad, sometimes embellished life stories out for everyone and their mother to hear, or the closed off ones, who liked to make everything about digging for gold. Before he’d come into Crazy Town and become a would-be hermit, it was really hard to have an actual stimulating conversation with a woman; forget having a truthful, soul-deep one.
But there was Shane, telling him about how she thought and giving him hints into her background in such an innocent, intellectual, non-entrapment way. He almost didn’t know how to respond.
He almost choked on his next gulp of whiskey, when she told him where she worked. Okay, so he should have seen that coming, given that fantastic body of hers…but why in all that’s holy would a looker from the Den be talking to the likes of HIM? There had to be some young, handsome thing somewhere, just waiting to be her Knight in Shining Armor. He was…gah, he was old and crusty.
Bah, get your mind out of the gutter, he mentally scolded himself, taking another shot so he could hide his surprise. It wasn’t like EVERY conversation with a woman meant that she was interested in him. Shane was probably looking for some stimulating conversation, just like he was. And she’d even said before that she liked saying things straight out; given his responses, she was probably just enjoying his company and that was that. Anything else was probably just wishful thinking, on his part.
Really wishful thinking. Woo boy, VERY wishful thinking…
”So that’s why you came to the Bullet?” He couldn’t help but ask, raising a brow at her. ”To get away from the people? You’re probably better off hitting the riverside that’s not far from here. This place has good food, but if you like quiet…nothing beats the Cheateu river. I should take you sometime.”
Screech, went the thoughts in his head. Yup, he’d just offered to take her to one of his favorite spots, and so…casually. Whoof, but this night was definitely one for firsts. Rewind and dive, dive, dive!
”Er…that is, you probably wouldn’t want to go anyway. It’s kind of dirty and the swamp’s thick around it, so the gators like to come running up to the bank to snap at your ba—er, your feet. But it’s quiet, and it’s secluded. Shit…not that I’d ask you anywhere secluded, because you don’t know me, but—“
And cue the blushing. Crap, he hated his life.
