He was a pack animal – his family worked as a pack, as big and as expansive as it was, and in truth he was glad, secretly, that Lily, no, Sastre had turned up as she did. His entire mentality was built around the pack being stronger when it was together, a wolf alone was nothing but bait, to be shunned and ignored and hunted. It was the reason Curran worked so hard to keep the true reason for his sisters absence from his family, why he spent hours forming documentation to explain her ‘travels’, but the reasons for his sisters continued absence from her pack wad becoming harder to explain, harder to reason. The young man was becoming desperate, and more so with each passing hour. Not that you would ever know. He was good at keeping up his happy go lucky persona.... it was what people expected of him. It was what he provided. And it was the reason the Loup hunted alone, despite the scream of instincts.
Rounding the side of the hummer, Curran swung the pack from his shoulders and climbed into the passenger seat, stowing the bag on the floor between his feet, within easy reach should he possibly need it. He wasn’t sure what Sastre had meant when she said that the hummer was equipped with everything they might need, nor was he sure he saw the reason for the vehicle to be indestructible. Still, at the end f the day, the woman beside him was the one who had all the training – who had the experience the man severely lacked, and he could do nought but trust her judgement when it all came down to it.
”Okay. Let’s do this shit.” he grinned, turning his head to look at her, his blue eyes wide. He was somewhat excited for this hunt, though perhaps not for the reasons you might expect. His sister was the reason he was here – she had led him on a goose chase to this hunt... and for curran this was only evidence that he was getting closer to finding her.

It was something like a thirty minute drive to the site of the most recent attack, deep in the heart of the forest that bordered the small town, and the hummer cruised down the bumpy, rutted two-tracks smoothly and without difficulty. Over the course of the drive, Curran had tried to make small talk once or twice, but when all of his attempts and questions were met with vague answers or outright silence, he eventually got the idea and fell silent as well.
For Sastre, the silence was nothing uncomfortable. She spent so much time on the road lately by herself that she was just used to it, and on the occasions that Florian accompanied her on a hunt, he typically remained just as silent as she did. The pair had spent the better part of a year working and training together, and as such, there was little need for any speech at all between them. They just knew what needed to be done, and they did it, plain and simple. It was a dynamic that had worked well for them so far.
Finally the in-dash GPS indicated that they'd gone as far as they could before having to set off into the deep forest. Shutting off the engine, Sastre stepped out and went around to the back of the vehicle, opening the hatchback and pulling out a satchel of supplies before slamming it shut and moving back to the front of the hummer. After checking all of her weapons--a 1900 Colt .38 loaded with her standard mixed-round clip, a 1911 Colt .45 loaded the same way, and a long silver-etched iron hunting knife--Sastre prepared to head into the forest.
Looking back over her shoulder, she watched Curran to make sure he was ready to follow.
"Do you need any weapons or gear?"

He wasn’t used to spending long times in silence when he was with company, and even after he had gotten only vague answers in return for his questions, it still took concentration not to keep asking them. By the time the hummer pulled up, Curran felt about ready to explode from the vehicle. Hopping out he shook out his legs and slung his bag back over his shoulder, shaking his head at Sastre’s question.
”No, I’m good. ” He nodded, closing the hummer door and looking around. Good of course meant he had his quiver, and a gun, tucked away in the back of his jeans. He wasn’t sure how much more he might need, though there was little chance of him using anything other than his gun, or teeth and claws if it came to that. The arrows in his quiver were meant to save one person... and she wasn’t here. He’d be able to smell her if she was.
Currans eyes deepened from bright blue to amber as he looked around the trees, breathed in the scents of the growth surrounding them. He took a minute, breathing, to rifle through scents and pick out the one that was unfamiliar. It was groggy, slow in his human brain compared to the wolfs, but once he had it, he knew what he was looking for.
”This way. The scent goes through the trees.” He said, glancing over his shoulder at Sastre as he struck out in that direction. Curran was not a seasoned hunter. He couldn’t load a gun quickly, nor could he hit tin cans from a couple hundred yards away with a bullet, but if there was one thing the wolf knew how to do, it was track.

Sastre may have been the more seasoned hunter of the two, but she wasn't prideful when it came to letting someone better equipped for a certain task lead. With his enhanced senses of sight, smell, and hearing, Curran would not only be able to lead them to the creature they were seeking, but would also be able to warn them of any trap or oncoming danger. Sastre had complete faith in her reflexes and abilities, but if she had someone with her that could provide advance notification, that was even better.
Keeping her gun at the ready, Sastre crept silently through the forest, Curran moving quickly and quietly ahead of her. It was incredible to watch the young loup as he navigated the dense woods, and she couldn't help but note that he never--not even once--made a single sound as he rapidly went along. She had been trained to move silently and quickly, but despite all of the hard work she'd put into that training, she was nowhere near the match of Curran's natural abilities.
As the continued deeper into the forest, Sastre let her subconscious mind begin putting the pieces of this hunt together, hoping to figure out what exactly she and Curran were after before actually running into the beast. Research of the surrounding area had revealed no natural large predators, despite the fact that several people had been mauled and apparently eaten in these woods. That was just speculation, though, since only one body had actually been found, in a half-eaten state. Forest Rangers had apparently scared the "animal" off, and recovered the body before it was dragged away...
Letting her mind worry at the problem, Sastre focused on keeping up with Curran, and steeling herself for the battle that was undoubtedly coming.

A death on silent paws, they hunted, and they ran, they played and allowed themselves to truly give into the nature beneath their skin. The hunt of course, was always optional. No one had to kill anything, the deer or buck they chased was always eaten, but it was never a necessity. Curran always hunted with the pack. He was good at it. He was fast, agile.... his nose was unmatched because he wasn’t driven by hunger so much as he was by the thrill of the chase. But recently Elle had run with them, naked through the trees, and now Curran stayed with her and the pups that ran at their speed. That beat everything.
So as Curran lost himself in the smells of the forest, he knew if he had been alone he would simply strip and take to his paws, hunt down and chase his prey and enjoy the thrill of running as fast as his paws would allow. A hunt could take hours, all night, and he never grew tired of it. As it was however, Curran remained in his skin and his clothes, creeping silently through the trees as his nose followed the every growing stronger scent, as his eyes picked out the small snaps in twigs that suggested something large had passed through here before.
After an hour or so, Curran paused and lifted the gun from his jeans, pointing it at the ground with one hand as he crouched. The scent ended here, which, given the absence of running water, meant there was a hole, a cavern. He just had to find it, and it took him only a moment. Looking up from his crouched position, he motioned Sastre over to the natural fissure in the ground in front of him.

Again, the silence didn’t really bother her, though when faced with nothing else Sastre found her mind wandering. And the direction that it wandered was one that she’d long tried to block out and leave behind. Her old life with Brennan was like a scar on her heart, one that had never really healed properly, and probably never would. Every time she thought she’d moved beyond it, her mind would take her right back, and that wound would reopen once again, as fresh as the first day she realized Brennan didn’t want her any more.
Shaking her head to clear it of these thoughts, Sastre kept herself focused on the hunt, and on the slight hint of a trail that they’d been following. Curran was an exceptional tracker, she had to admit. More than once she’d missed some small sign that indicated their prey had passed through the area, and if not for the young loup’s skill she would have been out here skulking around for hours, at least. With Curran at her side, Sastre had high hopes for finishing this case soon, and getting back to Florian to see what their next move was.
When Curran stopped and drew his gun, Sastre readied herself, unsure of what had caught his attention. He indicated a fissure in the ground, and she nodded understanding, creeping closer and peering down into the darkness. If Curran’s enhanced vision showed him anything, it was completely lost on Sastre. There was no way of knowing how deep the fissure was, or what waited for them at the bottom. Eyes flicking to her pack, she thought about lighting one of her flares and dropping it in, then thought better of it, as surely that would draw undue attention to their presence.
“You head down first,” she whispered, “scout out the area, and then I’ll follow you in once we know I’m not going to drop down and find the bottom about fifty feet too far for me to safely hit.”
