There was nothing like an empty beach at night. The moon would be out, gracing her with its luminescent rays as stars danced around like little fireflies before her eyes. ‘Diamonds’, she’d heard them called once, and she wholeheartedly agreed. The sand underneath her feet, black as the evening surrounding her, would be soft; perfect little grains of shell and past life, sticking to her toes like a lover’s kiss. A cool breeze slides across her skin, raising small goose bumps along her arms and legs, sending her hair twirling around her shoulders. A small smile curves her lips—
“Juliette,” A voice whispers, and she frowns. She was alone on the beach; the presence of others never did appeal to her as it did her brethren. Concentrating on the low whooshing song of the waves before her, she ignored the call. The ocean was calm this night, on its best behavior just for her benefit. Lapping at the earth by her feet, it licked at toes curled into the thick sand, bringing with it small treasures of the world beyond—
“JULIETTE.” The voice was getting more insistent now, putting force into her name. Agitation poured out of it in waves, making her beautiful ocean turn red with anger. She blocked out the sound of her name being called, refusing to give up her perfect little dream.
“JulietteJulietteJulietteJuliette…” Oh crap, it wasn’t going away! Unfair little voice! Frantically, she closed her mind, hanging onto a palm tree with both hands as winds sucked her skyward, tossing her so rudely into the waiting arms of a black hole…
The woman came awake with a painful snap of her neck, brown eyes opening with a flash of fire. Glaring up at the young woman currently standing in front of her desk with a yelping puppy in her hands, she big back a martyred sigh and straightened. “Really, Nancy? You couldn’t put a puppy in the kennel by yourself? Really?”
Ducking her head, Nancy the New Girl clutched the squirming retriever in her arms. “But…he was yelping! I didn’t know what to do!”
Yup, that was the story of her life.
Shaking her head, Juliette Delcampe- also known as Employee Jules from the Healthy Paws Kennel- scooped up said puppy from the other trainers arms and cradled the warm body against her chest. God, but she wanted to go back to her dream; to that dark beach and its cool, calming waters.
“Then again, with my luck, there was probably a shark looking for some girl-meat,” She muttered, giving the puppy a wry look. “What do you think, Sparky?”
Sparky just sighed and rested his muzzle against her shoulder. She’d take that as a ‘duh.’
The rest of the day went as it normally did; she watered and fed the dogs, did her best not to be scratched to death by a pair of evil Siamese cats and made sure the other employees didn’t burn the place down. When four o’clock rolled around, she was dog tired and ready to make love to her fuzzy slippers and bag of unopened cheeto’s.
Then again, she thought as she eyed the open doorway of one of her favorite nightclubs, how long had it been since she’d hit the night scene on her day off? Her other half practically whined for some air time, but Destiny- the mysterious woman of the night, who made lonely men forget about their troubles…if they paid her enough- wasn’t due for a night out until the weekend.
And that wasn’t for another four days. It was time for Juliette to have some fun.
So, about an hour’s worth of tearing her closet apart, she found herself practically glued to a secluded corner, watching as everyone else danced their little hearts out. Taking a sip of the fruity concoction the bartender had put together for her, she eyed the crowd and regretted just about every decision she’d made.
Damn that beach. There was a reason why she tried not to dream…

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - What the hell was Axel doing here?
The music was too loud, everyone was getting drunk, they were practically having sex on the dance floor, and the women looked like whores. These were the kinds of people that Axel tried to avoid. These people here were the ones that gave human kind a bad name and often made him wonder if he wanted to even save these disgusting people. They were nothing but full of sins and the next morning they’re going to be nothing but regret. So why was he doing it?
Because he was a hunter, and it was kind of a hunter’s code of “honor.” Protect those that have no idea that’s in the closet of the darkness, and to make sure that they keep their innocence. Although, a lot of the time, that doesn’t happen, most of the victims that survive their encounter with the supernatural end up knowing that everything that they were told was fake was real. So when they had told their parents that there was a monster in the closet, there was probably legit a monster in the closet, it’s kind of hard to erase that kind of knowledge from your head.
Axel stood in the corner of the club, his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes gleaming with a look that warned others from getting close to him. He was here on business, he wasn’t here to take down some drunk girl and show her a good time. If anything, he would rather his women be straight and willing than drunk and stumbling. Even though he thought of everyone in here to be low lives, there was still some respect that he had, but it wasn’t a lot.
On the outside, his trusty companion, his German Sheppard Winry-Ann, was walking around the building keeping watch. Axel had trained that dog well, she knew the smells of the different creatures in the world, and knew when it was time for her to step in. Honestly, considering that his hunt had to do with a vampire, Axel would have liked to leave her back at the motel. That was a no go though.
After his last hunt, and being in Alaska, Axel’s body was taking a toll from the sudden temperature change and his left leg was beginning to bother him. It always started with his leg first, giving out on him, whacking it on things without even feeling it, all of those kinds of things. It was a terrible feeling to have that thought in your head, thinking that you’re about to be put into a wheelchair. Someone would’ve thought that when the bad news had rolled off of his tongue from that doctor that he would’ve taken it easy.
Of course not. Axel was as stubborn as stubborn could get and he wasn’t going to allow the thought of being paralyzed on his left side stop him from getting his hands around the neck of the demon that had killed his mother…
This train of thought had been knocked away from him when his leg had suddenly given out again and Axel had caught himself on a nearby table, the people sitting at it staring at him with a glare in their eye. They were judging him, and putting him into the category of a drunkard. Not even close. Axel enjoyed his alcohol, but he didn’t drink to get drunk. With a glare that spelt out death, the people stood and left their chairs quickly, giving the table up to the grumpy hunter.
He smirked as he eased himself down into the chair, his hand instantly going to his left leg, rubbing it in a frustrated way. This was something that Axel could go without. Hunting vampires was a hard case, and with someone who had a leg that was going to give out whenever it wanted too wasn’t something that he was looking forward too. That just meant that Winry-Ann would have to do most of the work and Axel would have to wait for the perfect moment to close in on the blood-sucking monster. He just hoped that he could get there before it was too late.
There was a frown on Axel’s face as someone clearly tripped on his leg, and he didn’t feel a thing. Maybe it was about time for him to call it a night, time for him to tuck himself into his bed and sleep away the numbness. No. He couldn’t, there were too many live riding on this, and it was a big thing. This vampire had been hunted before, which was another reason why Axel couldn’t let Winry do all of the work. For all he knew, his dog was probably already hurt…
That frown on his face deepened, and he was now more concentrated on the floor where there were millions of people. His eyes drifting to those at the side, conversing with each other and making out, and buying drinks… so on. It was all of the normal stuff, but there was something in particular that he was looking out for. He was looking out for a stiff man, someone who looked out of place, who watched his prey like a hawk… who was a skilled hunter.
And no, that didn’t mean him.
Besides, the moment that he turned his head a little bit to scan the rest of the dance club, his eye caught the attention of the young woman that he was apparently sitting next too. Had no idea who she was, had no idea why she was just sitting in the corner by herself, and really, Axel didn’t give a damn. All that he was interested about her was that she looked a little like the whores on the dance floor… a perfect meal for this vampire.
Awesome. Not.

Okay, so maybe her little ‘plan’ hadn’t included playing a wall fixture, but this was progress! Sipping her drink and watching various couples out on the dance floor gyrate their little hearts out, she slowly felt herself relaxing. It was probably more to the alcohol and the almost comforting thump of the music, but either way, she might just actually enjoy herself tonight. There was no Destiny to fall back on; no handsy rich men who smelled like booze and BO, or equally ‘interested’ chauffeurs who thought taking a little something-something from the boss’ lady friend was a give in, in their bonus package.
There was just her, the music, her banana-strawberry something-or-another and the appealing fact that what happened in the club, would stay in the club.
At least, or so she hoped. With her luck, one of these happy-go-lucky dancers would be an undercover cop, who’d recognize her face and drag her back to Arkansas. Oh yeah, she was DEFINITELY getting into the party mood…
“Ugh, somebody just slip me a roofie already,” She muttered under her breath, slipping her heels half off as she shifted on her little stool. At least in that drugged out state, she could beat the crap out of that annoying voice in the back of her head and have some actual fun. She didn’t need Destiny to be able to have a good time! She could do it her damn self; as was her motto.
A commotion to her side had her glancing away from the dancers- holy crap, that lady was actually climbing her partner…kinky- and at a newcomer to the scene. He wasn’t exactly dressed like the other young, obviously horny guys in the club; this one had an air about him that practically screamed ‘FUCK YOU, I’M ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT!’ Which, normally, would have made her roll her eyes and look away with a muttered ‘blech, another emo dude,’ but if the scowl on his face was anything to go by, he probably could beat on someone just as easily as his demeanor claimed.
And cue some definite scooching sideways without getting out of her chair. She had to hold back a whimper when the couple, after shooting some nasty looks his way, got up and moved to another secluded corner. Drat, why did Mr. Grumpy I’ma-Fuck-You-Up-With-My-Pinky-Toe have to come on over and sit next to her? She’d ACTUALLY been talking herself into going out onto that dance floor.
But, now that she had him giving off that glowering aura, all she wanted to do was go back to her baggy pants and LSU t-shirts. Ugh, this was definitely going to be some night.
The little hairs on the back of her neck stood up, giving her a heads up about another’s eyes on her, and she glanced to the side just in time to see said Grumpy’s eyeballs glued to her face. Wonderful; she could practically read the disapproval on his face and felt all that mojo draining from her body. Argh!
“You know, if you don’t like the club scene, you could always try empty parking lots,” She couldn’t help but say, pitching her voice over the pounding music around them. “’Cause buddy, that scowl of yours would definitely win you some prize fights. You’d make a fortune!”
Yes, let’s antagonize our fellow patrons, she thought with an inner groan. But Destiny was the suave, seductive one. Juliette? She was more of a…say whatever comes to mind and dodge the rotten vegetables later kind of girl. Hopefully, this guy had some kind of sense of humor…

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - If Axel could be anywhere else but here in this club, believe it, he’d be somewhere else. This was one of those places that he didn’t find going too to be fun, then again, the only thing that Axel really enjoyed in life was going on a good hunt, and getting laid from time to time. Other than that, there was nothing else that he’d rather be doing. Personally if it was his choice, he’d give every single one of these people in here a good punch to the face. Then again, he didn’t want to waste his precious time on them. After all, he wasn’t here to party or have a good time, he was here to hunt down a vampire that had a habit of taking women out and killing them.
He hadn’t realized that he was staring at the other woman for long till she had noticed him. He gave her a face, and rolled his eyes and then turned away. If she wasn’t a woman, Axel would’ve been able to easily ignore her. But because of how he had been raised, to respect and listen to woman, Axel couldn’t drown her out. Not even the loud shaking of the building was helping him shut this woman out from his senses. It also didn’t help that his eye sight and hearing were stronger because he didn’t have a sense of smell. He had no one but the demon Dante to thank for that.
His lean and muscular frame leaned back against the seat that he had decided to occupy. No one would’ve been able to guess that underneath his baggy white t-shirt and leather jacket that there was a man with a six pack and jacked arms. It was because of his small frame that everyone just assumed that he was some lanky kid and couldn’t hold his own in a fight. He got this body type from his mother. He also inherited her thick brown hair, height, and the ability to eat what he wanted without getting fat from her too. What did he inherit from his deadbeat hunter father? The paleness of his skin that made it easy for him to burn, and his piercing blue eyes, it was annoying, and Axel wished that he didn’t have anything from his father, but that just wouldn’t make any sense right?
“Why don’t you mind your own damn business?”
Axel snapped back at her over the roaring of the techno music. He felt like his ears were going to bleed from the terrible music. The hunter wasn’t used to the sounds. When he was in his truck, he didn’t listen to music. It was silent. And he enjoyed the silence, and so did his dog Winry-Ann. But there were things that he wished that he didn’t think about while driving so much. It didn’t bother him so much, he talked to his dog believe it or not. He’s been alone for ten years though, after a while, driving around by yourself starts to get to you... it was just another small factor that played into Axel’s already insane manner. Axel, you show that young woman some respect! His fingers lightly danced across the necklace that he had taken off of his mother’s corpse ten years ago. It was a white gold chain with a white gold cross charm, and wrapped around this cross were a pair of angel wings. No, Axel wasn’t a believer, well he was, just not the kind of believer that one would think. Axel not only made it a mission in his life to hunt down and kill the demon that torture his mother, but he also made it his mission to capture an angel and torture them as long as he could hold them down. He held a lot of hatred for demons and angels alike. You apologize to her right now! It was almost like he could feel the necklace around his neck beginning to burn with the angry voice of his mother in his head. Though he knew that it just wasn’t possible, the chain around his neck wasn’t something special, it wasn’t a witch charm, and his mother’s spirit wasn’t attached to it. Right now… she was just a death echo back in that hotel room where she met her demise. “Hn…” That was his way of saying a lot of things, but right now, it was his way of apologizing to the woman next to him. His eyes looked at her from their corners before scanning the room once more. “I’m looking for someone.” That was all he could say, and that’s all that he really wanted to say to the young woman, but because of the nagging voice of his mother in his head, he had a feeling that he was going to get to know this girl a little more than he really wanted too. He gave a small, yet annoyed, chuckle. “I’ll do more than just win prized fights.” He mumbled, mainly to himself. Then his thoughts were suddenly scattered all over the place. It’s been a little too long since the vampire has made a move, and it worried Axel. How was Winry-Ann doing? [/blockquote][/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - -
But a fulfilling one at best. Yet my cross to bear, And I bear it gladly. Someone has to take a stand against evil. Why should it not me?
