Rachel Waldron had just passed into California that night, finally out of her home state. She had spent most of the money that she had managed to gather from her house when she left. Paying for the room at the Checkmate Motel didn't help the situation either. She had enough money for food the next day, but that was about it. After that, Rachel didn't know what she would do.
This, combined with everything she had been through these past weeks, meant that it was quite a while before she was able to crawl into the motel bed, much less fall asleep.
But, curled up on her side in the foetal position, she eventually managed to drift off, which meant that she was about to get a visit from someone who, though she didn't know it, was a very bad influence for her.

The wind blew lightly outside, the power suffered a brief outage but blinked back on quickly after. Rachel's mind became haunted by the dark presence that had come to visit her dreams...
The dream seemed identical to reality; same room, same motel, everything was in place, it just seemed to be very late at night, and a thunderstorm could be heard outside.
Then, the ticking clock on the wall came to abrupt silence, a shadowy corner where an armchair rested seemed to darken more, and now a figure sat in it. Lightning flashed, and revealed Rachel's visitor, one she'd seen in her dreams for awhile now...
Mephistopheles sat, legs crossed, in the armchair, looking at Rachel intently. "Glad to see you made it. I was getting worried." The demon said, eyes flashing yellow briefly. "At least you beat the storm, it's getting kinda spooky out there now, isn't it? Hope your trip here wasn't as bad."
When Meph had first learned of Rachel, it had intrigued the demon, to say the least. Her psychic ability could induce destructive insanity on a human mind, and would be a useful tool against hunters once she mastered it, and with the right teacher, that was sure to come to pass. The demon had many allies, and it never hurt to have more.

Rachel sat up in bed abruptly when she heard the voice from the armchair opposite the motel bed. Her long blonde hair messy from the bed, even in her dream, Rachel ran a hand through it quickly as she focused on the woman in the room with her.
"Hello," she spoke, her unconscious now used to this person making visits to her dreams, "what's going on? Am I where I'm supposed to be yet? I'm almost out of money."
In the back of her mind, Rachel assumed that the woman was a semblance of her subconscious telling her what she should do, but right now, she was worried about winding up stranded with no money. And, if that happened, she had no idea where to go from there.

Meph smirked at Rachel as she sat up and spoke. The questions came as no surprise to the demon, who remained seated but then turned on the light, fixing a gaze at Rachel.
"Simply put, you're having a dream again. We'll meet in person soon enough... but for now the best I can do is guide you to where you'll meet me." the demon answered. True, Mephistopheles could have simply visited in person any time she chose to, but that tended to leave a lot of signs of demonic presence. If hunters noticed the inevitable pattern of sulfer, electrical storms, and livestock failure, they'd track her and Rachel down easily.
"Money won't be an issue..." The demon answered. "Check the drawer on the nightstand when you wake up." Meph stood up and walked over, sitting beside Rachel on the bed. "So all that side, how've you been? Any incidents?"

A dark eyebrow raised at Meph's assurance that money wouldn't be a problem. This was getting into very strange territory. If this person was indeed a projection of Rachel's subconscious, as she thought, then how were they able to say something like that?
"I..I don't understand..." she admitted, somewhat meekly.
She looked down at her bed when Meph asked how she had been, and if there had been any 'incidents'.
"I don't...think so..." she answered. In truth, she didn't tend to stay in one place longer than she had to, so she wasn't completely sure.

Mephistopheles gently placed her hand on Rachel's shoulder. "Just trust me on this. I have my ways. I want to make sure you get there okay, and that's what I'm gonna do." The demon stated. "It may seem a little odd at first, but it'll start to make sense in the long run."
When Rachel explained she did not recall any more incidents with her powers, Mephistopheles left corner of her lip twitched a little but she kept it under control. Shame. Maybe next time. The demon thought.
"Well, good for you." Meph answered with a smile. "And when we finally meet up, I promise I'll train you better with how to control what you can do." The demon explained. "Sounds bad, I know, but the general way of things is you have to learn how to be able to control what it does to control when it happens... that making any sense to you?" Meph asked, watching Rachel with seeming concern.
"But it's good there've been no incidents... means you're controlling it more, which means less chances of those... hunters... coming for you." She said, emphasizing on the word hunters which she'd given Rachel plenty of horror stories about along the trip...

"O-okay..." Rachel nodded. This person, real or not, hadn't led her wrong yet, so why would they start now?
Feeling relieved at Meph's assurance that she would help her control her power, Rachel allowed herself a smile. The smile faded, however, when she mentioned the hunters. Meph had told her all kinds of terrifying things about hunters, which had only fueled Rachel's urge to run as fast and as far as she could.
She nodded quickly in response, before asking another question.
"Where do I go now?"

Meph leaned over a little, putting her arms over and around Rachel in a big-sister fashion. Playing the dark-side mentor was nothing new to the demon, and Mephistopheles had no desire to fail here. So long as Rachel was afraid of hunters, the girl would never trust them or take their word over Meph's. "Awww sweetie. It's been real rough on you lately. Wish I could do more for you right now... but it'll have to wait." She said sympathetically as she took in Rachel's anxiety, resting her chin on the other girl's head though a dark smile was present on the demon's face.
After a moment, Meph's expression went back to serious gaze and she looked Rachel in the eyes. "Tomorrow, there'll be a bus coming at around 8AM sharp and you'll be getting off at a town called Valley Springs. I'll meet you at the Round Table Pizza place there." The demon explained. "Head strait over once you're off the bus and I'll be there waiting for you."

Though she didn't want to admit the fact that she was scared, Rachel felt comforted by Meph's arm, and was both relieved and somewhat excited when she was told that she would finally be meeting this person in real life.
Which was somewhat strange, she thought, as she had thought that this person was a mere projection of her subconscious up until now.
"Okay, I will," she replied nonetheless, "what happens then?"

The girl was so loyal to Meph; and it showed. There was still, sadly, that anxiety, though. "What happens next? Well, the real work begins." Meph answered. "You've got me on your side, sweetie. No one's gonna hurt you with me around, and that's a promise." She said with a smile.
"Once we've met up, as I said, I'll help you learn how to use your powers better. Give you control like you've wanted..." Meph explained, pulling Rachel closer to her once she saw Rachel was comforted and relieved by the gesture of affection. "As you already know, you're not like other people. You're a very special girl and I want to help you reach your fullest potential. See, it's one thing to know how to control it, but you'll also need to protect yourself. There's a lot of nasty things out there, but I'l be with you the whole time."
Sometimes, it was all too easy. Young people were so simple to sway even ambitious scholars had nothing on them. The demon was known for a figurative silver tongue and had found the means to keep Rachel under her control.
