Even angels have their wicked schemes and you take death to new extremes. One moment. That was all that it had taken for Jade's life to be changed. One moment she had been hunting and the next she had fought the man that she cared so much about, her father. Seeing those black eyes staring back at her had about killed her but the pain of that unnatural betrayal was nothing compared to what the demon had done next. Her mother. An innocent if there had ever been one. So beautiful and kind, she could have been an angel with how she treated others and yet the perverse things she had been subjected to before she had died would forever be burned into the back of Jade's mind. Her mother's screams would haunt her when the darkness surrounded her at night and when she had too much time to think. She couldn't do anything about it either, she could find closure because the demon who had done it was still alive and out there. Mocking her with it's very existence.
Sweat poured from Jade's brow as she sat up in her bed, breathing heavily. She had had the nightmare again. It was ridiculous really, Jade could face down the evil things that went bump in the night but she couldn't handle one night within her own mind, couldn't face her memories. It was frustrating to say the least and it was just another victory for the demon. He had power over her despite his absence, that alone infuriated the huntress as she tossed the covers to the side and rested her feet over the edge of her bed. She was in a motel at the time, having no stable home to call her own. About five miles outside of Nevada, where 'it' had happened. It was the anniversary of her mother's brutal murder and she always went to her mother's grave site on that day, showing her respect and offering the same promise to her mother that she did every year.
"I will avenge you." Standing in front of the tombstone was such a solemn moment for Jade. It wasn't often that she allowed herself to show any emotions but as she stood there, a mark of her worst failure to date, tears slid down her cheeks. Her hands were folded in front of her and she wanted so badly to move, to speak to her mother but no words were allowed, she was just in silence as she was every year she visited. It took a lot of effort but she made her way closer to the tombstone with her mother's name on it and brushed the back of her hand lightly against the smooth marble.
"Hey mom..." She started off, somewhat awkwardly. One-sided conversations always were awkward, it was one reason why she never prayed, no response back just made her seem crazy.
"I'm back." God she felt pathetic but she'd get over that feeling. This was her mom and there was no one else around.
"I haven't found him yet...but I'm getting close. I've got some leads that I'm gonna follow after I leave here but I..I just had to visit you." She was shaking at this point as a light rain began to fall, as though the weather was mirroring her own torrent emotions within. She wouldn't break, she couldn't. If she began to cry now then she might not be able to stop and she couldn't handle that. She had to be strong, strong for herself and her mother. Strong like her father had been.
"I'm sorry mom.." She apologized every time she came, wishing that she could feel forgiveness somehow but she never got that feeling. The heavy weight of guilt remained yet again for yet another year. Her own burden to bare. Brushing her fingers against the scar she had in the middle of her palm, her own mark from the demon, she finally managed the strength to step back from her mother's tombstone and head back to her car. She was done for another year and she had to make good on her yearly vow, find and eliminate the demon who had dared to cross Jade Alanon.
Reaching her car, Jade took one more look over the graveyard and sighed, bidding a silent farewell to her mother before she got in her
1951 Chevy and drove away. Next year...
Her cell phone rang as she pulled out of the grave yard, another hunter that she had been in contact with for the last few weeks regarding that very demon. When it came to tracking, he was one of the best and even then he couldn't track the elusive bastard for that long before it vanished off the radar. Talk about annoying as hell.
"Whatcha got Daren?" She was right to the point as always but Daren, who was perhaps one of Jade's oldest and most trusted friends, knew what she was like and just went straight to the point.
"I got a lead for you, might be cold by the time you get there, but there's an underground fighting thing going on in Las Vegas an--" He was cut off by Jade's derisive snort.
"What the fuck would a demon want to do in an underground fighting match?" It was weird, a demon shouldn't give a shit about something like that.
"You know I hate when you interrupt me Jade." Daren snapped in annoyance before sighing and continuing.
"I don't know why but that's what the signs point to and you know I'm pretty damn good at what I do. So just go and check it out already. It's underground in a Casino known as The Seven Sins. It's not just humans from what my research says and it'll be dangerous, so be careful." Dangerous with beasties and possibly the demon that had murdered her mother and father, how lovely this would be.
"Seven Sins...cute. Alright alright, I'll check it out but if I get killed, you're the first person I'm haunting." Daren laughed and hung up, it was Jade's trademark threat anymore.
Vegas was her next stop and hopefully she'd come face to face with the demon who had fucked her over all those years ago and if she didn't, well she'd get some frustration out over some fun as hell underground fighting matches. Jade might only be a human but she was a hunter and therefore she was more than able to take care of herself and she would. She was a force to be reckoned with. The last of the Alanon Hunters.
