Ever since the near-Apocalypse of 2010, monsters of all kinds had been acting up. Things calmed down after the first few years, but every now and then a rogue monster would act out of the normal pattern of behavior. This could be a werewolf changing at will or a change of diet for some critter. Whatever it was, hunters weren't too far behind. Or in this case, a rogue angel.
Zophiel wanted to return to heaven so badly, he was willing to do anything. In the past few decades of his banishment, that meant he took his knowledge of the creatures out there, and started hunting them. Being an angel, though, he didn't hunt everything because, well, he knew better than most that just because a creature wasn't human didn't automatically mean it was evil. There were vampires out there who drank animal blood, so it stood to reason that there could be other creatures like that.
However, that was not the case tonight.
Anyone could tell you that normally, ghouls only fed on the dead, and would end up taking form of the last body they scavenged. However, every now and then, a ghoul would go rogue and want a change in diet... something fresher with hot, liquid blood in its veins. Not a cold, rotting body. That was Zophiel's problem now.
It started with a body found in a cemetery, along with a disturbed grave. That was like a flashing neon sign to Zophiel. Next were the reports of more victims. There were 4 in total, including the man from the cemetery. Zophiel had seen a few hunters in town scratching their heads. They weren't thinking outside the box as Zophiel had.
Zophiel was walking down an alley now, his black hoodie and cargo pants filled to bursting with hunting items. There was a gun in his hoodie pocket, salt and holy water in his left leg pockets, and his yo-yo and a knife in his right leg pockets. He was ready to face anything, and he was in the right mood to fight something nasty. He was so focused on tracking the ghoul that every little sound was intensified, so it didn't take long for him to hear the footsteps coming up near him. Was it the ghoul? Probably not.
Great, now what?

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - Axel knew that all hunters thought differently about the things that they hunted. A lot of them were starting to believe that not everything was as bad as they all thought. His mother even thought the same thing. But in Axel’s opinion… a monster was a monster, no matter what they did wasn’t going to change that. Whatever wasn’t a human was a monster and he didn’t care what they did for a living. They could be the sweetest thing on the face of the planet, but if they were anything but human, Axel would be the first one on their doorstep putting a bullet into their head.
He didn’t care. That was the kind of man he was. Often times people would have called him a monster, but at least he was still human. He wasn’t a monster by choice, Axel had grown up in this life and he grew up in such a way that made him close out the world, close out everyone except for his mother. She was his only friend and only family. There would be people out there that told him to get over her death; that it happened ten years ago that there was no reason for him to hold such a grudge anymore. If only they knew the things that he saw…
Back to the point about monsters, when he had heard about a ghoul in town, Axel was instantly on the ball and rolling into the city. Yes, ghouls are generally not harmful, they eat the flesh of those that are dead and take the form of those that they have eaten, it wasn’t something that serious right? They weren’t harming anyone… wrong. They were monsters and they had the potential to go from bad to worse, and that’s exactly what these ghouls did. This ghoul had decided that eating dead bodies wasn’t good enough so it had turned its attention to people. To innocent people that didn’t deserve an end that they were getting from this monster. Do you see why Axel didn’t care if the intentions of the monster were good? Or if they were only trying to live? They were monsters, they did terrible things to his kind and he wasn’t going to stand for it.
Good. Bad. Or just trying to live, they were all monsters in his eyes and they all deserved to die.
But the footsteps that Zophiel had heard behind him were not the footsteps of a human. It was the ghoul that he was looking for. With a growl, the beast was about to lunge till the sounds of a dog barking had grabbed the monster’s attention. A young German Sheppard stood at the end of the alleyway, barking like she was rabid and before the ghoul could disappear, a man had stepped into view, and a gun with a silencer attached was drawn, and then made the killing headshot to the beast’s head. That was one monster down, just about a billion more to go right? Right.
The man that was wearing the hoodie, didn’t seem to go running for the hills when Axel’s dog, Winry-Ann, came running into the alley like she was a sick dog about to kill him, and neither did he look afraid at the look upon Axel’s form that was complete with a gun in his hand with the silencer attached to the piece of equipment. What was the point of the silencer? Well, they were in an alleyway that was in a city with people around. Axel didn’t want them hearing the gunshot and then calling the police, at least not until Axel had hightailed it out of there.
And he was going to make sure that this guy knew that.
“No thank you’s.”
Axel said instantly, holstering the gun into his holster that was hidden behind his leather jacket. “I don’t have the time for you.” As Axel turned around, he nearly stepped on his poor dog. He looked down at her and realized that she wasn’t moving anywhere. He narrowed his eyes a little and looked behind his shoulder at him. “What’s your name?” [/blockquote][/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - -
But a fulfilling one at best. Yet my cross to bear, And I bear it gladly. Someone has to take a stand against evil. Why should it not be me?

The fact that the ghoul was coming up behind Zophiel wasn't new to him. He knew this was all a big game of cat and mouse. He tracked it, now it was tracking him. He was waiting for it to make a move so he could kill it. Ghouls weren't the smartest beasts and had slow reaction time. If it lunged at him, he'd have plenty of time to dodge it and then react.
However, when the Ghoul didn't pounce and the barking started, Zophiel turned, thinking he was about to save a poor stray dog from the beast. That was not the case at all. The Ghoul was dead, the dog was growling, and a stranger with a gun was all set to walk away like he was all that. Another hunter got the Ghoul before him? Zophiel wasn't one to get territorial about his hunts, but he hated it when he got to a town, started to hunt, only to have not needed to show up after all.
The guy obviously had no intention of talking, and Zophiel was fine with that. He never had the best track record with hunters. He'd prefer them to think whatever it was they thought and be on their way.
There was only one problem with that plan this time around. That dog...
"Normally dogs like me an all but this is just a little weird. Can you call off your pooch there pal?"
He was hoping the hunter wouldn't notice. He could tell already that this dog was very well trained by its Hunter-owner, which meant it knew the difference between humans and other critters. Of course, most animals did, that was why in recent years more hunters were keeping an animal companion with them. However, this one was well trained. It-- she was ready to attack anything non-human on her master's order. Zophiel could only hope that the hunter wouldn't notice. It seemed that way at the moment. He was about to walk off, and Zophiel let out a small sigh of relief. They were both about to leave and, and Zophiel turned to get out of the alley as well.
“What’s your name?”
Craaap. Zophiel turned back to face the hunter. He obviously knew his dog very well. Zoph had to use some of his quick wit and silver tongue skills to get out of this one.
"My name is Zachary." Zophiel replied, "I thought you said you didn't want any gratitude? Because if that's what this is all about, well, thanks."
It took Zophiel about ten seconds to realize that if he wanted to end this quickly, he had reacted the wrong way. A normal human would have been freaking out right now, and he was far too calm. He got so focused on trying to get this guy to leave that he didn't think things out so well. That dog had him on edge as well.
Great, Zoph... can a bullet in the head kill me? Yeah, probably... awesome.
Now what was the rogue angel going to do?

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - The fact that he was a cool and collected individual did send red flags up in Axel’s head, but because he was so quick to get out of there and avoid human contact at all costs, he didn’t take the time to stop and really take a closer look at this dude. It was one of the reasons why he had equipped himself with Winry-Ann in the first place. She was the eyes and ears of another part of Axel that didn’t want to acknowledge others.
And there was a lot more that Winry-Ann had picked up about this man before them. Not only did the little creature on four legs know that he wasn’t human. She wasn’t sure how she should relate the message. This was the kind of creature that she wasn’t trained to smell, because, well… who has heard of angels that had a smell? They didn’t leave behind traces of sulfur and that rotten egg smile, and they weren’t like vampires that smelled like dead blood, or even a zombie that was rotting flesh and graveyard soil. He definitely had a smell, Winry-Ann was just having a bit of trouble of relaying it back. He smelt like an old batch of chocolate chip cookies, you know when the dough gets old and gives off that strange smell? Yeah that’s what was going on. With Zophiel it burned her nostrils with this rotten dough smell. He wasn’t human… at least not all the way.
Winry-Ann whimpered in warning to her master, who had glanced down at her, and then turned his eyes to the man who was about to walk away. Well, even if he didn’t stop when Axel had spoken to him, he was going to get the stranger to stop, whether that meant shooting him in his damn leg, or getting Winry-Ann to immobilize him. It was going to happen. When it came towards people that his dog was skeptical about, that she didn’t know what to do, Axel had the right to be on guard and have his gun tightly in his hand. For a lot of Axel’s recent life, he had been alone, and now he finally had someone that he could fall back on, he wasn’t about to stop trusting her judgment.
And as soon as Winry-Ann stood onto all fours and walked up to be standing to the right of her master, but also a little in front of him, signaled to Axel that he wasn’t dealing with someone that was human…
His bright blue eyes narrowed onto the angel man in front of him and his finger was beginning to itch with greed of pulling the trigger. Axel Sastre Maverick was a big on shooting first and then asking questions later. Why? That’s how he had to do things after the vicious attack of Dante on his mother and then a few years after that, the vicious attack of himself. He quickly learned to take out the enemy to make sure that they cannot hurt you before asking questions.
“Hn… Zachary you say?”
Axel shifted his weight from one foot onto the next, preferably from his left to his right. His leg was beginning to go numb and this was currently bad timing on the nerves acting up. Seeing the sudden shift in weight, Winry-Ann moved around Axel, her eyes never leaving Zophiel to stand on his left side, standing in close to give him support if he needed it. “You see Zachary,” Axel made it a point to exaggerate the use of his “name.” “My faithful companion here enjoys the company of a lot of people surprisingly.” Winry-Ann moved again, but Axel shifted his leg ever so slightly to get her to quit moving. “It’s only on rare occasions that she doesn’t like someone, and it’s looking like she doesn’t like you. So I’m not going anywhere.
“I don’t want your damn thank you.” Axel hissed, his eyes lowering in disgust. “Civies usually freak out when a man and his dog come in and kill a monster right in front of them. Who the hell are you?” You see, now Zophiel really needed to be careful with what he answered with, if he said hunter, he was going to be shot in the knee, if he called himself a monster, he was going to get shot in both knees. So really, his only choices were to get shot in the knee, and then get shot in the knee once more. It wasn’t that hard of a decision, especially for someone who wasn’t so uneasy pulling the trigger. Axel already knew that he wasn’t human, it was just time to pick the right moment to open fire on the beast. [/blockquote][/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - -
But a fulfilling one at best. Yet my cross to bear, And I bear it gladly. Someone has to take a stand against evil. Why should it not me?

Zophiel could tell the instant the dog started acting up that things were going to get tricky. The dog was obviously trained well and knew Zophiel wasn't human. Okay, the body was, but he wasn't. He eyed Axel's trigger finger. He was tensed, ready to fire if Zoph made one false move. Sure, Zophiel could teleport... but that ability wasn't so reliable these days. The last time he teleported, it went fine. The time before, he appeared about a foot over an in-ground pool and got drenched. Teleporting was plan B. Talking his way out of this mess would be plan A. Here's hoping his silver tongue wasn't rusty.
"Your dog is probably smelling something I hunted lately. I'm a hunter, like you. I was trailing that ghoul. I wanted it to think I was helpless so it'd attack."
He looked closely at those piercing blue eyes, hoping for any sign that he was being believed. So far it didn't quite look that way. Maybe he needed to add a little more to the pot.
"I'll be honest, my name ain't Zachary. But you know how it is. We don't need to be telling everyone we meet our real names, right? Something like that can leave a trail and get us in trouble. You're a hunter too. You know how it is."
Zophiel resisting shifting his stance, afraid that any movement would get him shot or bitten. He kept his hands in plan sight as well. He was doing everything he could to keep from being injured. And he was ready to teleport at a moment's notice now. He could tell that he was going to have to run. There was no other way around this.

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - Axel wasn’t believing it. Winry-Anne was a very well trained dog, and she didn’t just stop everything that she was doing because of the smell of a dead monster on a hunter. She was actually used to that smell. Axel has met other hunters before in his life while he had her, but this was something different. Winry-Anne was on edge, and she was waiting for the order to be released to tear the arm off of this man or thing.
Axel’s thumb pulled back the leveler of his pistol and his piercing blue eyes were beginning to fill with murderous intent. There was a time where Axel met a young girl while he had been hunting, and she had told him that she knew what the look on a man’s face who enjoyed a good kill, and Axel was one of them. It’s not something that he liked to admit, but when he was hunting, he enjoyed the control, he enjoyed knowing that he had someone else’s life in his hands, and most of the time, he enjoyed ending it. If he wasn’t a hunter, he would’ve been a serial killer.
“Stop lying.”
Axel said to him, his eyes narrowing down quickly and lifting his gun and aiming it directly in between the eyes of the fallen angel. “Stop talking like you know my dog.” He said through gritted teeth. “I do know how it is, and I know how my dog reacts to creatures like you.” Axel’s words were filled with venom and distain. It was obvious that he now knew that this man wasn’t human, and now… another hunt has started. “Tell me what you are right now, or I’ll put two bullets in between your eyes.” Winry-Anne was shifting, getting a little antsy. She could feel the energy of her master beginning to change from a calm meaner to murderous. In return, Winry-Anne’s lips curled back and she was beginning to growl, foaming drool dripping from her fangs and her lips. The hair on the back of her was beginning to stand up and her tail was sticking straight out. Her right paw was lifted and tucked up a little bit, just waiting for the commanding release of her master. “You see, you can’t fool me.” Axel leaned his head back a bit, a grin forming on his features. Someone who didn’t know Axel would have thought that he was crazy, insane, and needed mental help. You better believe that. He was crazy and insane, and he knew that he needed help. How many people in the entire world lived the life that he did? Where they were forced to watch the rape and torture of his mother over and over and over again? Axel had the image of his dying mother imprinted on his mind, every time he laid his head down to go to sleep, he saw her burning and being killed. It was a nightmare that he had constant for nearly ten years, and it was a nightmare that he was always going to have till the demon that had done it suffered and was dead. [/blockquote][/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - -
But a fulfilling one at best. Yet my cross to bear, And I bear it gladly. Someone has to take a stand against evil. Why should it not me?

Zophiel wasn't sure what to do. He couldn't lie anymore, but he didn't think telling this guy the truth was a good idea either. Something about this guy made him think that either one, he wouldn't believe Zoph and shoot him, or two... he WOULD believe Zoph and STILL shoot him. This was a lose-lose situation for Zophiel.
So, what should he do? He thought it over quickly, his angel-brain able to work much faster than a human's. and decided the best course of action here would be to tell the truth. Maybe the guy wouldn't shoot after all. He knew if he was caught lying, he definitely WOULD get shot.
"Alright, I'll confess. I'm not human. My name is Zophiel... I'm an angel of the lord..."
For added effect, hoping to at least stall the shooting, Zophiel let out his wings. Unfortunately, Zophiel's wings weren't very impressive. In fact, they looked horrible, like a bird that had over-groomed its wings. There were missing feathers and bald patches. It went along with his punishment and banishment.
"You can see that I'm not lying now. I don't like going around telling people what I am."
He'd leave out that tidbit about being nearly powerless and about being banished. After all, it wouldn't do any good to tell this hunter every detail. He figured it wouldn't help his case one way or another anyway.

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - Axel cocked his eyebrow up when he had seen that finally, the other “hunter” was giving in. He knew that there was another reason why he had gotten himself a dog, and it wasn’t just because of his left side being off and lacking a sense of smell. Winry-Anne was more than that. She was a guard dog and she could sense out things that he was never going to be able too. If he didn’t have Winry-Anne, he would’ve just turned around and walked off without even realizing that this man here was something other than an “ordinary” person.
“I’m an Angel of the Lord.”
Axel stared, and those words echoed heavily through his head. Then suddenly… Axel was beginning to lose his grip on reality. His eyes gave out on him and he felt like he was suddenly thrown back into the past. He found himself pinned against the motel wall with his mother on the ceiling and that damned demon standing in the middle of the room. The echoes of the demon’s venomous voice shook violently within the inside of his head and his mother’s pleads sounded like an alarm. The small conversation they had clear as day. “If the angels were going to come, they would’ve been here.” On the outside, it looked as if Axel was staring in shock at the look of Zophiel’s wings, but honestly he was battling within himself, trying to tell him that what he was going through wasn’t real, that it was all in the past and that it wasn’t happening again. Winry-Anne sense the change in her master and she suddenly put her leg down and brushed against Axel, trying to get him back to reality. It was sad to say that the side that Winry-Anne had brushed herself against was the numbing side. Axel’s trigger hand was beginning to shake and his eyes glazed out. He growled and roared in anger as he pulled the trigger several times. The first few shots going into the ground in between them and then the last two shots he fired found themselves imbedding into Zophiel’s shoulder and arm. He snapped his fingers twice, Winry-Anne’s ears folding down and she lunged, barking like a rabid dog as she sunk her fangs into his leg and took him down the ground, chomping down and shaking his leg violently. And before Zophiel had the time to really react to Winry-Anne’s painful and sharp teeth, Axel had called her off, and he was currently holding the man by the collar of his sweatshirt and slamming him hard against the building wall. “You’re going to die...” He hissed with venom. The screams of his mother was what was fueling him right now. He needed to do something to get them to stop; it was because of that night that Axel hated both Angels and Demons. She had prayed and prayed that night to be saved from the demon that was going to claim her life, and none of them showed their faces. She was ignored and because of that, Axel was forced to watch as she was murdered right before his eyes. Being told that he was an angel, was a mistake. But of course, Zophiel had no idea that he had just unleashed a monster. “Oh I’m really going to enjoy this.” Axel grin was one of insanity, he was no longer a sound man. “I’ve been waiting all of my life to get my hands on one of you.” His eyes darkened, showing his true intent. “I can’t wait to hear the sweet sounds of your screams. [/blockquote][/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - -

Zophiel retracted his wings as he watched the young hunter's reaction. Zophiel wasn't sure if this was good or bad. He was staying so still, the rogue angel was sure he was in shock about the whole reveal. Not many people knew angels existed, especially hunters. From his experience, most had lost faith after killing so many demons and never seeing a single angel. Some didn't even believe that demons were really demons, since there were no angels around.
Then Zoph noticed the change in the hunter's eyes. The angel knew that look. Zoph wished this had been like in a movie, with everything in slow motion, but that was not how it was going to work out. He didn't see exactly what was happening, not like you might in slow motion. No, everything was a blur.
Blam Blam!! There went to the two shots into his arm. Before he could cry out, something sharp was digging into his leg, and before he had time to consciously realize it was the dog, he was on his back on the ground. The jolt hurt more than the bite, at least at first. Then last, before he could even properly cry out, Zophiel was jerked off the ground and slammed against the wall.
Finally, out of breath, Zophiel was allowed a moment to cry out in pain. It was a weak, strangled gasp at this point. The rogue wasn't sure he had ever been in this much pain before. If he had been, it was a very long time ago. Zophiel was barely stronger than a human right now, barely meaning where as a human might have passed out, Zophiel was painfully awake.
Now, right now yes, the world was starting to slow down as he tried to block out the pain. His shoulder was throbbing from the two new, fresh hot wounds in it. He felt the hot, sticky blood ooze down his back and arm, mostly his arm. If he had been wearing white, or short sleeves, it would have looked gruesome. But it was a black hoodie that hid the blood well. Only when it finally started to get to his hand could anyone see the injury.
And lets not forget his leg. If Axel hadn't been holding him, Zophiel wouldn't have been on his feet. The bite wounds were painful and were making the rogue angel's leg cramp. His sock was filling with blood now. Good thing his boots were black or else he'd have to toss them as well.
“You’re going to die...”
Zophiel completely agreed with that.
“Oh I’m really going to enjoy this. I’ve been waiting all of my life to get my hands on one of you. I can’t wait to hear the sweet sounds of your screams."
Zophiel hadn't realized it, but this whole time, since the first shot, he had his eyes closed. Now he finally opened them and looked At Axel, seeing those cold blue eyes filled with nothing but utter hate. Zophiel wanted to speak, and found it difficult to do so.
"Let me go... I've never-" a twinge of pain made his suck in air, "Never done anything to you. Wh-whatever one of my brothers did, I had no-nothing to do with it."
Zophiel hated begging, but... he had to.
"Please, let me go. You'll never see me again if you'll let me go right now."

Oh, some may call it a curse. A life like mine, but others? A blessing. It’s certainly a lonely life.
- - - - - - - - - - The growl of his dog was currently fueling Axel’s drive. The two of them were in sync with each other, it was a little strange. At least that’s what the strangers on the outside would think while looking in. On the inside, Axel only had Winry, and Winry only had Axel. That’s the two of them were, and that’s how it was going to be for a very long time.
It wasn’t just the growling German Sheppard that was putting fuel to Axel’s fire. The memories of his mother’s blood curdling screams, the memories of her blood splattering all over the walls, and the memories of her lips moving silently, praying for her God to save her. And it was the memory of no one showing up to her rescue, and it was the memory of how weak he was and how he couldn’t do anything. At eighteen years old, Axel stood there watching as his mother burned with his traumatized uncle next to him, promising himself that he’ll get himself a demon and an angel and he’ll avenge his fallen mother.
Axel’s eyes didn’t move from the fearful face of the angel before him, but he could see the blood soaking into the black hoodie of the man, making it glisten in the little light of the alleyway that the sun was giving it. Winry-Ann’s nose wiggled to the stench of the blood, but she continued growling, her saliva dripping from her teeth, her muzzle a little red from the blood that had spilled into her mouth from biting Zophiel the first time. She wanted to sink her teeth into his flesh again, but like a good soldier, she waited for her commander to give her the correct command.
Axel was running on pure rage right now, and hearing Zophiel beg for his life was getting a grin from the hunter’s face. Little did the fallen angel know was that he was just making the situation for himself so much worse. With a murderous grin on his face, Axel lifted his pistol and drove the silencer right into one of the bullet holes that he had placed into the angel’s arm. “Oh your kind did everything to me.”
Axel hissed. “You stole my life.”Axel placed the blame for his life on a lot of things. He blamed the angels for not saving his mother, he blamed the demons for killing his mother, and he blamed the sperm-donor for the hunter that he is today. Many would think that he should’ve placed the blame onto his mother because it was her choice to bring him into the hunter life, and it was her choice to go chasing after a man that had left without a word, and it was her choice to dip her hands into business that they didn’t belong in. Axel would never in his entire life blame onto his mother. She was all that he had in life, she was his best friend and his mother. He loved her to death, and still did. You let him go, son. Her voice pounded against his skull, and he could feel the chain that he had taken off of her body burn. But that wasn’t the case. He knew that the necklace around his neck wasn’t burning, and he was completely aware that the tattoo that he got his mother wasn’t itchy. It was all inside his mentally disturbed head and he had to remind himself that, but at the sound of his mother’s voice, to her memory, and to the realization that she was nothing but a death echo now was what angered him. He didn’t care if he was on the breaking point of insanity. He had Zophiel, and he was going to use the angel to his advantage. Axel pulled the pistol from his shoulder and pressed it onto his hand. “I wonder what it felt like to Jesus when he was nailed to the cross.” Axel started. “Do you think it felt anything like this?” With one quick and fluid motion, Axel’s trigger finger pulled that little tabby on the gun that made it go off, shooting a bullet directly into the hand of the fallen angel, having it exist and lodge itself into the building that he was pressed again. Winry-Ann moved in closer, but Axel shuffled his right foot on the ground, getting the dog to stop in tracks.
