Everything was blurry, foggy and out of focus as Norah slowly opened her gray colored eyes. Where on earth was she? A small groan escaped her as one of her hands pressed against her forehead, keeping the room from spinning. Her head felt like it was going to split in half, almost like a severe hangover without the pleasure of actually drinking. Gradually she sat up on the soft bed that she was laying in. This isn’t my bed… she thought sluggishly while her eyes adjusted to the small room she was in. Never in her life did she see it before, what the hell happened last night. With eyes scanning all around her she takes in her surroundings. The bed she was sitting on along with the small desk in the corner were the only form of furniture. There was a little bathroom that seemed to not have a door on the other side and as she looked at the only window she found something odd, it was boarded shut with only a small gap that she could look out. This wasn’t right, there was no way in hell that any of this was right.

”Hello?” Norah called out as she slid off the bed, her legs taking a minute to work out the jello, tingly feeling. Her mind felt like it weighed a ton as she tried to think about what she remembered from last night. Slowly she shuffled to the door, trying her best to get it to budge. The handle didn’t work, pounding on it didn’t work. Norah was locked in. ”What’s going on here!?!” she screamed out in hope that they people would come talk to her. A form of panic started forming in her chest, something that grabbed hold of her lungs making breathing difficult as she then started running around the room in a failed attempt to find a working exit. Exhausted from all of it she collapsed to the ground, her back propped against the desk as she stared angrily at the door. It was as if a switch flipped, her memory finally returning of what happened to her.

It was dark the night she was taken, her car parked just outside her little coffee shop right near a streetlamp but it did nothing. The shadows seemed to hold an ominous tone to them slowly descending on its impending victim as she moved towards her silver car that seemed to glow in the lighting. Norah didn’t remember much from what happened. She did remember the feel of someone creeping up on her, attacking her from behind and clamping a hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming. Screaming was pointless at that point while she tried to fight the strong individual off. It was at that moment that she felt the sharp pain in her neck and then the whole world seemed to fall into itself. The average sized female was falling faster then she could comprehend as the rough hands grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of her car. Her last physical memory before waking up in the little room was the guy turning back to her muttering that she was perfect. Perfect for what? She didn’t have a chance to ask as she was pulled into the dark abyss of a drug induced stupor.

Norah stared around her hoping that something would help her realize where exactly she was at. For all she knew she could be across the country from her little shop. A deep grumble escaped her as she sat up, deciding to tear through the desk in hopes of finding some form of a clue. Franticly she pulled the drawers out finding little scraps of paper without any writing on them, pencils and an old phone charger. Wait! Phone charger. If there was a charger there had to be a phone. Moving faster then she thought possible she tore through the rest of the drawers then started flipping everything over in the room as she prayed to whatever gods that were listening that they would leave it in her possession. She flattened down onto her belly, looking under the desk and then noticed something dark under the little side table next to the bed. Could it be? Without caring about the noise she was making she dove for the table, fishing out a destroyed touch screen phone, the front cracked horribly.

Her head spun around to glare at the door that was used as a shield between her and her captors; terrified they would realize the small treasure she found. Norah scrambled across the bed to hide behind it, hitting random buttons on the phone in hopes it would work. Frustration seemed to plague her as she continued to stab at the phone with her shaking fingers, the thing lit up causing her to almost drop it to the hardwood surface below. As if on autopilot she slides her finger over the broken surface of the phone not sure what she was pushing but suddenly the thing made the one noise she swore she was imagining. That little beeping noise to tell you that they were connecting you to a call was like music to her ears. Her nerves were getting the best of her as she put the ringing phone to her ears, scared tears forming in her eyes that she brushed away in one movement. Please be on the other end, please, please. she pleaded in her mind before she heard someone answer. Before they had a chance to say anything she started talking quickly in a hushed whisper, realizing this was probably stupid but she had to try. ”Hello?! HELLO!? Please please be there!” she begged the complete stranger, hoping with all her might that it was an actual person on the other end of the line. If not, she feared she was going to be a goner.

John grinned as the well placed shot sent the blackball careening down the green velvet and into the left pocket, a grin that grew when the man opposite him swore loudly and slammed a fistful of twentys down on the greasy, and finger print marked wood of the table. Clicking his tongue John shrugged, scooping up the money and leaning back against the counter to check it was all there, wetting his thumb as he rifled through the crumpled notes, the pool cue settled against his shoulder. ” Sorry man.“ he smirked the false sympathy in his voice overruled by the smug look that sat easily on his features. ”Better luck next time, yeah? “

Rolling his eyes at the other guys insults, john finished counting the money and folded the notes in half, tucking them into the top pocket of his pale blue shirt and moving to put the pool cue back on the stand. No one else was going to play him here tonight, especially not if they had just watched him play baldy. There was little point in wasting the money he had earned at the bar either, and he knew that was what would ultimately happen if he hung around. Instead, he picked up his jacked and shrugged it on, grabbed the other half of his burger, nodded a thanks to the waitress behind the bar, and exited into the fading light of a city that seemed ready for sleep. But of course, what things seemed were never really what they are, and John knew that this was more likely the calm before the storm. It was Friday night after all.

Chewing on his burger, he dug a hand into his pocket and found his keys, swinging them around his finger as he headed back for his truck, a beat up rusted old thing, that to look at wasn’t worth the scrap metal. That was how John liked it. There was less chance of anyone stealing it if it looked like a piece of shit. And they definitely weren’t about to find the 3 litre engine that shined under the hood either.

Climbing into the front seat, he tossed the remnants of his burger into the bin and started the engine, only to stop before his foot even hit the gas. Rolling his eyes, John swore under his breath and started looking for his phone – he could hear it vibrating somewhere against the floor, and only just managed to find it before it went to voicemail, pressing the magical green button as he lifted it to his ear. ” Hello?“ he asked, as everyone does upon answering the phone.... but he wasn’t prepared for the bombardment of hysterics that met him.

” Hey! Hey hey! Calm down! Whats going on? Do i know you? How did you get this number?“

It seemed the gods were on Norah’s side when she heard the husky male voice on the other end of the shattered phone. Happy tears sprung up in her eyes as she gripped the cell tightly against her ear. Her happiness over just hearing another living souls voice caused her voice to freeze. Temporarily rendered in capable of talking all she could do was cling to the sound of his voice, memorize it like she never had before. Already she knew that without someone to help her something bad was going to happen. Why would someone steal a girl with a mediocre life if they didn’t expect to keep her around? She’d seen enough of those cop shows to know this wasn’t going to be something easy to come out of.

”T-thank god you’re there. Please you’ve got to help me!” she croaked as her voice finally returned. When the man told her to calm down that did anything but calm her down. It was the complete opposite as a frown marred her face. ”I can’t calm down!” she whispered harshly as she pressed her back tightly into the corner away from the door. ”My name is Norah Thomas. You…You don’t know me…I was kidnapped by these men…man…I don’t know how many there were,” she said in a normal tone, eyes still watching the door like someone might jump out of it at any moment. Norah was terrified of what would come of her if they found out the former hunk of junk of a phone was working. ”I found this phone here…destroyed for the most part but I got it to work and it randomly called you,” she sniffed her body shaking from the adrenaline coursing through her veins. Who could blame her after all that had transpired in such a short amount of time.

Pressed tight against the cold wall, Norah’s grey eyes never leave the bleak door willing it to never open up again. ”Please you have to help me…I don’t know where I am or how I got here..” she cried not sure if this guy would believe her or not. Already she felt so hopeless, so completely useless and never in her life did she want to feel this way. Her entire life was based on her trying her best to always have some form of control of her life. After all the unexpectedness she always wanted stability. It now looked like life was going to throw her a curveball, but the fear was she wasn’t going to survive from it.

His enquiry was met with silence, and for a moment John removed the phone from his ear and instead just stared at it, making sure that there was indeed a connection on the line and he wasn’t having hallucinations brought on by too many long nights, beer, and the lack of a mattress on which to lay his head. He was about to press the button to disconnect the line when the voice started again, as hysterical as before, but somehow, strangely, growing calmer.

So much for not being able to calm down.

”Wait.. kidnapped?!” Johns eyes widened as he looked around for the man who was obviously playing a prank on him. This wasn’t fair. This was evil. Kidnapping had been the first thing everyone had thought when his ex had gone missing; how he would of longed for this phone call then. Now it just seemed like a cruel joke, and John found his blood beginning to boil as he got mad. This entire story was ludicrous, and he was going to make the prank caller on the other end of the line wish they had never ‘accidentally’ dialled his number.

”Look lady, I don’t know who the fuck you are or how you got this number... but who the fuck do you think you are getting off and calling me?! Who put you up to this? Give me their fucking name and tell me where the fuck you are right now because i swear, this isn’t fucking funny” John practically growled down the phone, his voice low, and menacing. As far as he was concerned, the woman on the other end of this phone was sick, and had found out about him through a newspaper, a student... sh might even go to his old school, but either way. He was having none of it.

Norah clung to the phone like it was her life vest in the ocean, that it was the only thing keeping her from drowning. Her mind was working faster than she could possibly comprehend as she attempted to form words. Did this guy realize how much trouble she was in? Did he know that he was her only means of survival? All of these questions were running through her mind that she was struck dumbfounded as she attempted to stumble over her words to talk to him.

What she wasn’t prepared for was his reaction to her. ”Yes kidnapped! I was walking to my car and then they got me,” she started her voice wavering as she her mind was pulled back to the fear she felt just a short time ago. She pulled her legs up closer to her body as she seemed to lock eyes on the door. Even at that moment she was panic stricken with the fear that her captors were going to barge through that door. Norah didn’t have much time to worry about that when she heard the male’s angry voice on the other end, his words throwing her back. Who the hell would make jokes about this and why did this guy seem to think she was making it up?

”Listen asshole!” she hissed low not wanting to be heard, ”I don’t know what kind of sick fucks you hang out with that would come up with shit like this but I assure you that it’s very, very real. This phone is smashed, I messed with it a bit and it called you….I don’t know why it did but I can’t hang up and call the police because I don’t know if this thing will work again.” The end of that almost sounded pleadingly to him. Norah was never one to beg for anything but right now she knew she sounded pathetic. She had to take a few calming breaths as she realized her voice was raising, any second how those twisted freaks that kidnaped her were going to come in here if she didn’t to keep her cool. ”No one put me up to this…I swear to you…” she sniffed, ”M-My name is Norah Jane Thomas I live in Alexandria, Virginia…I….I’m not sure where I am now…” she muttered before she gained more courage against the moron on the phone. ”I know this isn’t funny. I’m not particularly fond of being drugged and forced to god knows where either whoever the hell you are---“

Norah wasn’t able to finish that last thought as the floorboard outside her door creaked before the door’s lock came undone and the door swung open. ”Oh god…”s he muttered in fear as she moved with lightning speed towards the bed, shoving the phone under her pillow. She barely had time to get away from it before the kidnapper was there in a mask grabbing her. ”My you are a pretty one…I thought they were lying to me. Don’t worry precious we have big plans for you,” he hissed in her face, a whimper escaping her as she turned her face away from him his breath smelling foul. ”Just let me go….I won’t tell anyone just…let me go…” she begged, yes now she was going to beg for her life. ”Just learn to shut the fuck up…we know exactly what we’re doing with you bitch,” he spat as he threw her against the bed and walked out locking the door behind him.

John was half inclined not to believe the words that tumbled from this woman’s mouth. The words alone were too incredible to believe, to trust the sentences that tumbled from her mouth into what would appear to be a pool of lies. Then, he actually started listening to her, and the hunter inside of him recognised the tone of voice. It was impossible to fake, that tone. It was desperation and fear, and unless there was true reason to be afraid, unless you were an Oscar winning actor, it was impossible to fake. And John had little reason to suspect an Oscar winning actress to be ringing his mobile.

Gripping the phone tight, John listened to the woman at the other end of the phone beg, and knew, truly, that this was far from a prank call. Humanity did not beg unless on it’s last knees, when there was nothing else left to hold onto pride for. It took even more to beg to someone you didn’t even know, and for the longest time, John’s voice was stolen away from him, and by the time he got it back, was about to tell this woman his own name, and promise he would find her, it was too late. She was nothing more than a whispered voice in the distance, muffled for some reason.

Gripping the phone tighter, John’s eyes widened as he listened to what he presumed to be the kidnapper threaten the woman on the other end of the line. This wasn’t good. This was never good. John’s grip on the phone was tight enough that he heard the case began to creak, and he loosened his fingers, transferring the mobile to the hands free kit on the car and starting the engine, though not before he had flexed his fingers to restore the flow of blood to his pale fingers.

Slamming his foot on the pedal, John followed the first, and only lead he had. Alexandria, Virginia.
”I’m coming, Norah jane Thomas.”
