Hope was such a fragile thing. It could be the glue that held things together or the hammer that busted them apart. At the moment, Lexi wasn't quiet sure what she'd classify it as because there was no guarantee that what she was about to try would work. For all she knew, the demon had lied to her in order to draw her into his tangled web. That was what demons did best, after all. Lie and deceive.
Unfortunately, she couldn't afford to disregard anything that might save her son in law and give her daughter peace. She would try almost anything to remove the deep grief that she saw in Simi each and every time she visited. Watching her baby struggle with such heartache was more than the older woman could take.
Which lead her to this moment.
Pausing in her pacing, Alexis James lifted her face to the sky and gripped the object in her hand close to her heart. Sending out a silent prayer, the elegant blond closed her eyes and listened carefully to the wind around her until she felt another presence take form. Then and only then, did she open her eyes and stare directly in the face of one of her angel contacts. The man's eyes were dark and he quirked his head sideways in an oddly birdlike movement that creeped Lexi out a bit.
"Alexis James..... Its been a while since you last called upon us." he said, stepping forward to look around the clearing. Finding them alone, his dark gaze bore back to the blond before dropping to her clenched hands and understanding flickering over his features. "Ah.... i see... You have discovered the purpose of the seal...." he continued, satisfaction gleaming in his eyes. "We wondered how long it would take for you to puzzle it all out. We could not interfere, you understand.... Free will is man's fate and only by sacrifice can you mortals reach your full potential."
From her spot across from him, Lexi stared at the angel incrediously. No matter her blood line, she'd never liked angels nor understood them. They were cryptic beyond extremes and if Ry's only chance hadn't rested with one, she wouldn't have called one now. The angels words, however, filled her with intense fury. If she understood right... the angels had known how to save her son in law all along and hadn't bothered to help them. It made her wonder if they would even help now or if she were wasting her time. As much as she wanted to lash out, she knew she couldn't and it took all her strength to batten down her rage.
"Yes, well.... Sacrifices have been made." she said, coldly. "The demon Stolas said that I held something that belonged to Ryder Winchester and his line and held the power to pull him out of the pit..... is this true?"
Observing her for a moment, the angel paced a circle around her that had Lexi stiffening. However, angel didn't seem to notice as he stopped before her once more and stared at her hand again.
"This is true." He intoned, nodding regally. "Ryder Winchester is the true guardian of the Seal. He and your daughters line will be charge with protecting it for all time. We suspect that was part of the reason he was targeted by hell.... Besides his being a Winchester, in general, that is. We suspect that they hope to keep the line from taking up their charge in order to obtain control of the ring. Which, of course, can not happen... And leads us to the conversation we are about to have. I assume you have something you need of me?"
Breathing out a sigh of relief, Lexi couldn't hide the fact that this was good news. Stolas had remained true to his word. Tilting her chin forward, the lithe blond met the angels gaze even as she opened her palm to reveal the Seal.
"Yes.... I need an angel capable of pulling my son in law out of hell and back to where he belongs. As the true keeper of the seal.... I believe that his soul is worthy of redemption? I also assume that this is the reason I've been entrusted with the Seals care all these long years?"
With a brilliant smile that resembled a proud parent, the angel suddenly clapped his hands and gave her a bow.
"Very good, Ms. James... Very good. You finally understand!" he replied, suddenly moving with unhuman swiftness to take the ring. "Your wish... is my command...."
THen, with a blink of the eye, the angel was gone. Lexi could only hope it was to rescue her daughters husband and that she hadn't just lost her only chance of helping him.
