PERSONALITY » Cold, hard and callous. When the world takes away everything you hold dear, everything that ever gave you a reason to live or to smile, there isn't much else you can become. Really, Grayson's merely the shell of a man. He was a man who convinced himself that vengeance would bring him some kind of inner peace, instead it left him without a reason to go on. His job became the first thing to do so again, so it became the only thing he was really driven for. He's known by his students for being 'mean'. Really, he works them hard because he knows what will happen to them if he doesn't and he refuses to be responsible for that.
HISTORY » Grayson, unlike a lot of the hunters he knew and grew up with, wasn't born to a hunting family. At the age of 6, Cooper Grayson and his younger brother, Ian, became orphans when their parents were killed by a Wendigo during a camping trip. The boys were saved by a hunter who took them home to his wife until he 'worked out what to do with them'. His wife however, became fond. While her husband was away on hunting trips, she had the boys to keep her company, and so eventually, Elena and Jacob Rowe decided to adopt the boys. Elena doted on them, but Jacob never seemed as invested. While the boys grew to call her Mommy, he was always Mr Rowe. This only made it harder when Elena developed Cancer. It swept in hard and fast, robbing the boys of a second mother within the space of a couple of months.
Mr Rowe had no want or need for the boys, nor did he have the time he'd have needed to raise them, so found a quick solution in the form of the hunting academy. He paid their tuition and for the first few years he wrote letters to ensure the boys were okay but soon, those stopped. The boys quickly learnt that all they had was each other and they knew that once they left the academy, they had to stand on their own two feet. Both boys excelled in their classes, making a name for themselves at the academy. Cooper graduated two years before Ian, and left the academy with not only the knowledge and skills he learned there, but possibly one of the most beautiful girls he'd ever seen. Within the year, Anna and Cooper were married and they welcomed their little boy Joshua into the world a year later, just in time to see his uncle Ian graduate.
The brother's took an amount of joy in hunting, they knew the risks and they knew that it wasn't always good, you lost people or people got hurt, but they also thrived on the fact they could help make the world a better place. Help people, much like they were helped. To look back on it now, Grayson would say that he'd taken his life very much for granted. While, over all, his marriage to Anna was a happy one, they fought a lot more than your average couple, and there was one too many broken promises made to Joshua. That didn't mean they weren't the light of his life. Everything he did was for them, but how do you explain that to a toddler?
The worst came at Josh's fourth birthday though. Two days prior, he went off on a hunting trip. It was a small thing, it wasn't going to take more than a day. He'd be back. He promised. Joshua sat and waited for his dad all day. Unbeknown to him though, his father was in a hospital bed fighting for his life. When he woke, he was completely alone. Ian was no where to be seen and he'd missed his sons birthday by three days. He rang Anna, who ran to be by his side, but when their son was unable to look at him, she was forced to tell Grayson their relationship was over. It was a wake up call. The one he needed. He moved into a motel near the family home and he had arranged visits with Joshua. He stopped hunting and cleaned up his act. He did things he'd never done before. He took Anna on dates to prove he'd changed and to show her he loved her, he took Joshua to baseball games. He became a normal husband and a normal father.
It was a sunny day in the middle of July and Grayson got a call asking if he wanted to spend the day with Joshua. He jumped at the chance and invited Anna, taking the pair of them to the park. It was spending the day rolling down hills and fighting bee's away from screaming women with sugary drinks that reminded him why being part of a family was important to him. That day he made a promise to Anna. If she took him back, this would be their life. He was done. This was it. The three of them, living a normal and happy life. Honestly, when she said okay, he was more shocked than anyone. He had his family back. Well, all besides the brother he hadn't seen since he woke. He didn't know if Ian was out there somewhere, but he didn't hold out hope.
That night, he moved back in and then he read Joshua a bed time story, tucking him into bed. He told his wife he wouldn't be long and slipped down the road to the local video store. It was going to be perfect. Just the two of them curled up on the couch. That was the plan anyway. When he arrived home, Grayson found the front door ajar. Pushing it slowly open, he stepped cautiously inside, calling out Anna's name. Slowly he ventured through all the rooms, everything looked the same as it had when he'd left, the television still quietly speaking in the living room and the pile of dishes that could wait till morning still in the kitchen. He continued to call her name as his feet hit the stairs. After calling a couple of times, he even found himself calling out to Joshua. Walking towards his bedroom, he pushed open the door, seeing the bed covered with rose petals and freshly lit candles either side of the bed. Was this it? Some sort of surprise? But that still didn't explain the door, or the fact that she wasn't answering him. Turning on his heels, Grayson headed to Joshua's room and pushed open the door. There, on their son's race car shaped bed, laid his wife and his child, Anna's back to him and her body shielding Josh as she appeared to be holding him. Something didn't feel quiet right, but it didn't occur to Grayson until he noticed a stream of blood tricking down the bright blue race car.
It made headlines. You'd expect it to when a mother and son are butchered so mercilessly. For a long time Grayson was suspected. The husband kicked out months before, finally claiming revenge. If it hadn't been for the CCTV from the video store and an eye witness having noticed someone else enter (though never leave) the house before Grayson had, he probably would remain the prime suspect to this day. In fact, there are still people that think he did it. Once he was released, free of charge, Grayson went in search of the demon that killed his family. It didn't take him long. Not really. A mere six months. Six months and the bastard was gone.
It took a while for Grayson to come to terms with the fact everything he knew as now gone. For a long time he lacked any sense of purpose. It was only in seeing an old friend that he actually found a use for himself. The younger sister of an old friend who informed him that the academy were looking for staff. He liked the fact that in walking in their, few people knew him, and those that did knew only of the guy who attended the school six years earlier. He did hold onto a few friends, those being the few that actually knew what he'd been through, but none of them ever speaking of it. That became his life. Full time teacher. Never get close. Never get hurt.
