The Big Ones*
[/font]Personality
--- >> Kate is a hard working, loyal hunter. She is extremely dedicated to protecting people and killing bad things, sometimes at a cost to herself. She comes across as rather serious, but there’s a caring, fun-loving side with a wicked sense of humor under there, if she would just loosen up once in awhile. She is deathly afraid to do this, however, for fear that she’ll unintentionally lose control and hurt someone on accident. Therefore, she tends to keep to herself, and rarely gets close to people, both emotionally and physically. She’s fairly new to being a vampire, relatively speaking, and though her control is rather good, she doesn’t trust in herself. To keep herself occupied and her mind off of how yummy the people around her might taste, she often buries herself in work. This may not make her the life of the party, but at least it ensures that everyone else at the party hangs on to theirs. ---
History
--- >> Kate grew up in Chicago with her dad, Will, and her little brother, Michael. Kate’s mother, Annabeth, died in childbirth, leaving Will to raise the two children on his own. Will managed pretty well, and his kids were the light of his life. Being a homicide detective, though, he tended to be gone for long periods, and Kate and Michael learned to rely on themselves when they had to. Most times, though, Will managed to find someone from the precinct to keep an eye on them, and the youngsters always thought this was great fun. They loved hearing stories from the officers and firemen, most of which were generously embellished, and Kate knew from an early age that law enforcement was the life for her.
The kids’ favorite sitter and frequent visitor was their dad’s partner, Susie, a spunky African American woman. Susie always had time for the kids, even if she had only come over to work on a case, and Kate and Michael adopted her whole-heartedly into the Briscoe clan, first in spirit, then in name when she and Will fell in love and married.
Kate was always a hard working, intelligent student, and her school years passed quickly. She and Michael remained very close, and they, along with their best friend Ryan, often found various ways to cause minor mischief and mayhem. The three of them often wandered the city, exploring and looking for grand adventures when they weren’t in school, studying, or with their dad and Susie. Roaming the city in this way, Kate quickly learned how to look after herself and get out of a bad situation. After she graduated, college presented little difficulty to her, and she flew through the police academy with honors. Michael took a slightly different course and joined the military after he graduated high school, but the two still remained close.
After Kate graduated from the academy and started working for the Chicago PD, she and Ryan decided to move in together, and the two eventually married. After seven years together, Kate and Ryan had a beautiful baby girl, who had them instantly wrapped around her tiny finger. Kate spent many productive years on the job, quickly making detective in the homicide division. On several investigations during this time, she and her partner, Dooley, saw many things that they couldn’t explain. This spurred Kate to start researching the supernatural on her own, and she and Dooley eventually learned a great deal and gained a tentative web of contacts. Word eventually spread through certain channels about the cop with the open mind, and Kate began to moonlight as an investigator and part-time hunter when necessary. While her life tended to be hectic, Kate was handling her family, her job, and her supernatural work fairly well until she managed to get herself in over her head.
One night, a man's body was found abandoned with its throat ripped open. No information could be found on the young man, but his body showed many wounds, old and new, along with various signs of torture. Kate was assigned to the case, but could make little headway, and after a few days, another body showed up. Then another. And another. Each victim following the first disappeared for several days and was then found dumped with their throats ripped open and sporting obvious signs of torture. Frustrated, Kate took to the streets, roaming the scenes of the crimes and hoping to find what she was missing. It was at one of these sites that Kate was snatched by the killer, a vampire.
The vampire had been watching Kate's progress, or lack thereof, with great amusement, and when the opportunity presented itself, he eagerly took her as his next victim. He held her hostage and tortured her for several days, and eventually all the pieces fell into place. The first victim had been a hunter, who had stormed the vampire's nest and killed all but her captor and his nest leader, including her captor's mate. In escaping, the vampire and his leader became separated, and the vampire had fled into the city. He managed to track down the hunter and capture him, killing him slowly. He was driven mad with grief and loss, however, and started taking humans off the streets, determined to make them suffer as much as he had.
Before he could kill Kate, however, the nest's leader managed to find the vampire's hidey hole. He argued with the rogue vampire, trying to make him see reason, but the vampire is too far gone. Seeing this, the leader attacked, determined to put him out of his misery. The two fought violently, but the leader was stronger and finally managed to take the other down. Kate wasn't optimistic about what the leader would do with her, but this question never became an issue: during the battle, the younger vampire was thrown onto her, and his blood seeped into her many wounds. Kate could never go back to the life she once knew. The nest leader oversaw Kate's transformation and took her under his wing, teaching her to control her bloodlust and live off of other food sources besides humans.
Once she regained her presence of mind, she contacted Dooley and alerted him to her predicament. The nest leader strongly recommended that she leave town, knowing that to be around the ones she loved, the ones she let her guard down around, would only put them in the most danger from her bloodlust. It broke Kate’s heart, but she left the city and the people she loved so that she wouldn’t hurt them. Dooley took care of things at home, staging her death and calling an end to the search that had started when she first disappeared. He promised her that he would keep an eye on her family in her stead, and that he would always be there if she needed anything.
Kate’s brother refused to let it go, however, and somehow managed to track down information on her. He searched for her unrelentingly for a year, pressing Dooley for information, along with anyone else he could find with ties to the occult. Michael finally managed to make contact with her long enough for her to tell him that if he loved their family, he would let her go. Michael was shaken by Kate’s obvious transformation, but he refused to give up on her. He now works as a hunter, much to Kate’s chagrin, unable to go back to a life of not knowing. His determination and military training have served him well in this new life. He runs into Kate once in awhile, but it’s painful for her to be around him for long periods of time. Though her control has grown immensely, she still doesn’t trust herself not to hurt those she cares about.
In regard to feeding, she keeps herself well fed on animal blood so that there’s only a very small possibility of her being hungry when in contact with humans. She’s also worked very hard to learn how to stop feeding before she kills, so that if she does slip, it most likely won’t be fatal. Her control isn’t perfect, but it’s to the point where she can function around humans. Luckily, it doesn't tend to affect her consulting, as it’s most common that she’s called in long after the crime scene’s been processed. If she does encounter a body, it's after hours at the morgue once the autopsy’s been done, so she isn’t likely to be in contact with large amounts of fresh blood. Since Kate’s gained control, she’s never killed an innocent, though the possibility haunts her.
Despite this, she has reconnected with some of her old contacts, including Dooley, as well as making several new ones across the country. When she’s in town, she’ll sometimes visit her old neighborhood, secretly keeping an eye on Ryan and Amelie. She’s watched Amelie grow through the years, marveling at Ryan’s endless patience and love, all the while wishing she could be there with them. She never lets them see her, however, and only ever stays in the city briefly, both because she fears herself, and because she's afraid that the monsters will one day find out about her family and come after them. Kate also rarely talks about her family, or about her life before hunting in hopes of preventing such a thing from happening. Her brother, Michael, usually let’s her know what’s going on with them, when he can manage to find her.
Now she travels most of the time, killing those things that take advantage of the innocent. She’s available to several scattered police departments an law enforcement agencies, and she’s more than happy to consult on the stranger cases in return for information and resources she normally wouldn’t have access to. She and her mentor eventually parted ways, but they are still on good terms, and they run into each other now and again. For the moment, Kate is content to protect innocents from falling into a fate like her own. Ahh, to be ignorant again…---
