The Big Ones*
[/font]Personality
--- >> How do I really explain Katie? Okay, there’s three Katie’s really - Just met Katie, friend of Katie and know you well Katie. Just met Katie is incredibly kind, she’ll smile at you in an attempt to make you melt. She can be quiet and secretive and often comes across as shy, though always friendly. Friend of Katie is a huge contrast, she can still be quite elusory, but she’s a lot more fun to be around. She’s always got your back and she’s the sort of person that would tell you what you want to hear to make things better, even if that means lying, but when it comes to herself she’s quite closed up. Most of Katie’s friends wouldn’t have a clue what was going on with her or what had happened to her in her life because she just doesn’t let people get that close. Which is why ‘know you well Katie’ is so rare. But it happens, the only current example being her boyfriend, Reed. If you know Katie well, the fact you know her can have one of two effects, she’ll either become dependant or abrasive. Granted abrasive generally leads to dependant though. She has a fiery streak to her and can easily become argumentative. She’ll generally argue a point she doesn’t even really care about for arguments sake, but she definitely hates being told she’s wrong when she isn’t.
History
--- >> Katherine Jennifer Berkley was born on a rather important day. Well I say that, it probably wouldn’t be important to anyone anymore, but when she was born it was very important to the town the Berkley family lived in. I should probably take this back a bit to explain more. See, four years before she had Katie, her mother Esme had another child, Jamie. At the time she got pregnant with Jamie, Esme was extremely happy with her partner, Richard. The baby made three and she was so happy she could burst, but she had a small confession for Richard. Well it was small to her. She was a witch, she was raised a witch and was still practicing the craft. At first Richard didn’t believe her, Witches weren’t real, that stuff was all fantasy, but once she proved it to him? Well once that happened he might as well have been a Richard shaped hole in the wall. Esme was convinced she was going to have a termination but her sister stepped in and stopped her, agreeing to help her raise the child. She was only young and she was scared about raising a child on her own. Her sister promised to help her, that she’d never be alone, so she had her little girl, Jamie. She did everything she could to be a good mother but after four months and suffering from a severe case of post natal depression, she ran and left Jamie behind. She rang Jasmine afterwards, her big sister telling her to do what she needed to do and that her and Jamie would be there when she was ready to come back.
In the time she was away, Esme went from state to state, working bar jobs, living out of motels and generally just doing what young girls do. That included hooking up with any guy who was interested. Fortunately for Jasmine and Jamie, Esme found herself pregnant again after a quick hook up one night at a bar. Once she realized she was expecting again, she also realized what she’d left behind and went home to bring her family back together. Once she returned home to Misery Valley, Jamie’s father seemed intent on getting her back, but all she cared about was her family. He kept on at her until the ninth month of her pregnancy. It was a few weeks before Katie was due, Richard found them. He got into an argument with Esme, telling her that eventually he’d make her love him. After months of it building and hours of that one fight, Richard flipped and pushed Esme, sending her flying down the stairs. Her sister rushed to her side, telling her to lay down, but it was too late for that, her waters had broken and she needed a hospital. As Esme was giving birth to Katie, Richard was running down the current mayor of the town, killing him on impact. No one knew who hit him and Richard, as vice mayor, instantly took over his position.
Life in the town became hell, Esme felt like every time she looked over her shoulder, he was there. He started dating another woman, who had a child a little older than Katie. No one ever knew about the child he and Esmeralda shared. But the guy was psycho, always trying to press her buttons or find a way to get at the kids. He’d turn up at her door in the middle of the night, intoxicated and angry. The one thing Esmeralda didn’t know, at least at first, was that every time she rejected him, or any other woman did for that matter, women started to turn up dead. It was soon noticed by the police though, and the press. The string of young women being killed was soon the only thing people of the town spoke about, and somehow the finger found itself pointed at Katie’s mother. Rumours of her being a witch and killing women because she was bitter about her lot in life became a big deal and soon she was the only suspect. Police never had anything to link her to the murders, probably because she didn’t commit them. Probably the most covered was the murder of the Mayors wife. The story of a young mother being taken away from her loving husband and leaving her son behind. Esme’s heart broke for her and her child but she knew she wasn’t responsible, despite what everyone believed.
Everyone had turned against Katherine’s mother, completely, and on the day of Alice Stansson’s funeral, a bunch of people showed up at the Berkley house. Katie’s big sister took her upstairs and Jamie was told to hide. Katie doesn’t remember any of it, she was only two years old, but Jamie vividly remembered the shouting and screaming, the crashing and the door’s banging. Despite everything, Jamie kept her sister company and hid in her room. Suddenly everything went quiet again and Jamie just waited for her mother. Her mother who never came. Instead the next person the young girls saw was a member of the local police force. Jamie and Katie’s mother had been found in the garage and it had appeared that she’d gassed herself. Everyone knew what really happened. They killed the big bad witch. But with everything going on, it was covered up, even by the police. The girl’s aunt Jasmine moved in to look after them, bringing her daughter Lorna with her. The town treated the entire family like they were as guilty as they assumed their mother was. They made Misery Valley live up to it’s name until eventually they left and moved to another state, only returning when Jamie turned 21. Being an ‘adult now’, she insisted she could look after Katie on her own and that it was time for them to go home. She enrolled Katie in the local high school and she herself picked up her studies at the college near by.
It was really hard for Katie to be back in a town that hated her and her entire family. It wasn’t as bad as the stories of her childhood, but it was hard for her being so young and just wanting to fit in and be normal. She got sick of running home at lunch time to clean yogurt out of her hair and having drinks thrown in her face. She even had people pretend to be her friends just to make her look bad. But it was when a guy pretended he liked her that she broke. He played her like a fiddle, told her all the nice things a girl would want to hear, got her in a… you could say compromising position… and then let the world laugh at her. That night she strolled downstairs at a party, only to have everyone laugh at her. She was absolutely devastated, but more than she was upset, she was pissed. She stormed home and went straight for her mother’s magic book, looking for something that she knew was in there. A spell. Well technically, a curse. She moved to her big sister’s room and slapped down the book, open on the page, and told Jamie that they were all going to pay. Jamie had been seemingly doing better than Katie at fitting in, she met a guy and made friends, but Jamie always wanted revenge for her mothers death, she was just waiting for someone to break Katie and when she did, Jamie was more than happy to make the town pay. One night at a party, Jamie had been with her boyfriend and she’d disappeared. Said boyfriend went looking for her and found her upstairs in one of the bedrooms. His statement said that she’d quickly turned, kissing him, before starting to giggle. She then took three steps back and stabbed herself through the chest. The police found what they claimed to be ‘suspicious items’ on the bed near her, though technically those items were only candles, rose petals and ashes from a burnt piece of paper. The witch rumours circulated again, putting Katie right into the thick of it all, however this time she actually deserved it. In only a day, reports of deaths, technically suicides, started popping up on the news, becoming more frequent as time went on. Within two days nearly fourty people had died and the bodies were stacking up.
Katie had been walking up the steps towards school, trying to act like everything was normal like her and her sister agreed, when she felt something land on her. Stopping still and closing her eyes, Katie stood there as various pots of yogurt were dumped onto her head. She was still stood there when she heard a voice call out, asking if she was okay. At first she didn’t realize it was even to her, she’d started to get used to fact no one cared, that was until the hand landed upon her arm. Pushing the nicely coated hair out of her face, her eyes rested upon the guy who appeared to be looking up, shaking his head, Katie’s eyes followed to see the people who enjoyed throwing yogurt, before he quickly told her to follow him and he’d sort her out. She didn’t know what that meant but he didn’t appear to be throwing yogurt at her and he was the only person that had been nice to her in a long time. So, still distrusting as ever, Katie went with him. The guy who soon introduced himself as Reed, invited her back to hers and helped her get cleaned up and gave her some clean clothes. It wasn’t until his step father came home and practically threw her out of the house that it occurred to Katie who Reed was.
His step fathers disapproval did nothing but encourage Reed as he got to know Katie. They became close very quickly, feelings growing between the pair that they both seemed to pretend weren’t there. However as her feelings for Reed grew, so did Misery Valley’s death count, and Reed was the only thing that made her start to feel guilty about that. She was already regretting what her and Jamie had done, but after the curse got to him, after she found out he was going to die, she had to try and stop it. Once she found out they couldn’t, her and Reed ran. They packed up as much as they could fit into the car and ran. Within a week and a half, everyone that lived in Misery Valley had died. Police and camera crews had tried to enter Misery to find out what was going on, but only the scarce few that left town quick enough actually survived.
