NAME » Marie Bethany Morse
AGE AND DOB » 36 // July 18th, 2000 // While Marie has been alive for 36 years, she stopped physically aging at 20, entering the 'life, death and rebirth' cycle of the phoenix. Her body will never age beyond its current appearance, thus making 'age' rather pointless.
EMPLOYMENT AND EDUCATION » Had finished High School Education
SPECIES » Unique//Phoenix
POWERS AND ABILITIES » Marie was, unknowingly at birth, possessed by the spirit of the phoenix, a mythical fire bird thought to be both eternal and beautiful. Dormant for the first twenty years of her life, a raise in sunspot activity on her birthday caused the creature to awaken, thus activating its latent power. Legend has it that the phoenix remains young by setting itself aflame as it ages, destroying itself, but then rising out of its own ashes as a new bird, a carbon copy of its younger form. Since waking within Marie, the entity has blessed the young girl with abilities she deems both gifts and curses;
'Rebirth'- The greatest power Marie possesses is immortality, although she achieves it through almost tragic means. On reaching her twentieth birthday, the entity within her began bending her body to its cycle, and thus, her body is destroyed as the phoenix's would be, only to rise out of her own ashes, never aging, never changing. Each year, on June 21st, Marie's body will quite literally self-combust, flames wreathing her, before she becomes nothing but ash. She then wakes on June 22nd in the place of her demise, still physically 20. While this may seem a blessing, eternal life, it must be noted that she has to 'die' to be 'reborn.' Thus, on combusting, Marie loses all her short term memories, and all her emotions toward those around her. Each year, faces of those she loves will be erased from her mind, and on waking, she will treat them as strangers.
It must also be noted that, should she suffer severe injury, one enough to kill a normal human, she would enter the 'rebirth' cycle prematurely, self-combusting and suffering the same fate as she would on June 21st. Dying in such a manner does not mean she skips the 21st, but will instead just have a number of resurecctions throughout the year.
'Limited pyrokinesis'- As a bird of fire, it would only make sense that Marie has some natural control over flames. Through thought alone, she can both create and manipulate fire, although the effort severely drains her, and it takes a great amount of concentration to keep control. Thus, she very rarely uses the ability, unless it is in some desperate defensive capacity.

LIKES »
>> Dancing; there is something very invigorating in the art form that allows such freedom of physical expression.
>> Reading; especially fantasy novels, her favourite being those of Terry Prachett.
>> Her bed; there is nothing more comfortable than one's own bed.
>> Company; even though she knows that she shouldn't have it, and often tries to push it away, she feels contented when in the company of others.
>> Music; because it fills the silence of solitude she often imposes on herself.
DISLIKES »
>> Emotional attachment; in truth, she adores it, but as she knows that everyone she meets will be lost to her within a year, all memory of them erased, she is remarkably weary, not wanting to hurt those around her.
>> Cold weather; does anyone like the shivering and the lack of sunlight?
>> Confusion; her naturally inquisitive nature leads her to ask many questions, but she hates it when she can't find answers.
>> People who take their friends, family and lovers for granted; things that she feels she can never have.
>> The phoenix entity; it has, afterall, completely destroyed her former way of life, segregating her from humanity.
STRENGTHS »
>> The phoenix entity has made Marie immortal, as any death results in her self-combustion, and thus, resurecction.
>> Marie is not one who likes to give up easily, and if she has a goal, she will pursue it until she sees it complete.
>> The entity within her has granted her pyrokinetic abilites, and while manipulation of flames leaves her both mentally and physically drained, she is not someone to be crossed lightly.
>> Despite her somewhat self-imposed solitude and her deliberate efforts at distancing herself from others, she is actually a remarkably friendly person, secretly craving the attention of others, happy when around those wishing to spend time with her.
>> Good at keeping her own secret, Marie is both a very reliable and very trustworthy person, not one to gossip, not one to betray her friends, and certainly one capable of keeping her mouth shut when requested.
WEAKNESSES »
>> Marie, despite hating lonesomeness, strives to life a life away from others, seeking to impose solitude on herself, so, upon her entrance into her next 'life' she doesn't hurt those forgotten.
>> Despite being both likable and friendly, Marie can often seem lost in her own mind, a little daydreamy or distant, and there will almost always be something blocking someone truly emotionally connecting with her.
>> Every time she is ressurected, once a year, if not more often, she loses all her memories of the people and emotions in her past life. No matter how hard she tries to remember, all ties are effectively severed, making her feel remarkably alone.
>> Marie is very intune with her emotions, and thus is prone to wild mood swings should things upset her, the slightest act enough to cause to sway from giggling to weeping.
>> The ressurection process she experiences is remarkably painful, and can be incredibly destructive. While, over time, she has come to better control the flames she creates during her self-combustion, anyone caught close to her risks being incinerated with her, and should she be experiencing the combustion due to severe body damage, she may well lose control, burning anything within a good few feet of herself.
HOPE AND ASPIRATIONS »
>> To find a way to break the cycle of the life, death and rebirth, allowing her access to her memories once again.
FEARS »
>> Being alone for eternity, never able to get close to anyone due to the decimation of her memories on rebirth.
PET PEEVES »
>> People trying to get too close to her, and for all the wrong reasons
>> Having to push away those she actually begins to feel a connection to
BAD HABITS »
>> Being unnecessarily sensitive.
>> Pushing people away from her.
>> Biting her nails when agitated, afraid or confused.
BIGGEST SECRET » She doesn't often go around telling people she spontaneously combusts each year, and then rises from her own ashes.
all about
you.
you.
PERSONALITY » Marie is often thought to be quite a meek girl, as she is far from 'loud'. Wary around newcomers and almost impossibly shy, she can be, at first, very hard to get along with. Often only giving very basic answers to questions, she can can seem illusive when conversing with those she doesn't know, and her distant and solitary nature, self-imposed due to her fearing forgetting those she meets in her rebirth, hurting their feelings, can leave her seeming self-absorbed.
However, those she comes to trust, generally unintentionally, those that include her and seem generally interested in her persona stand to awake a very different side to the young phoenix. To those she counts as friends, she is fun-loving and amicable, and almost constantly stating opinions or asking questions. She has a naturally inquisitive nature, and will question anything she doesn't understand, almost demanding explanations.
There is, equally though, a sadness to Marie, and while she does her best to hide it from those she cares about so as not to upset them, she cannot escape the knowledge that she is, ultimately, alone. A unique species among humans, an immortal among mortals, she knows that she can never truly fit in, and she can never truly love or be loved or sustain any relationship, as her rebirth leads her to forget the faces of those she knew, the emotions she felt for them.
HISTORY »
Marie Bethany Morse was born on the 18th July, 2000, to Michael and Stephanie Morse. She was the youngest of two children, and she looked up to and adored her elder brother, one Jason Morse, from an early age. She had a remarkably normal childhood, living in a suburban part of Chicago, middle class parents making sure she had a good education, and she was never short of anything she wished for.
However, this picture of surburban bliss was not all it seemed. What neither Marie, nor her parents, nor her brother knew was that, at birth, Marie had been possessed by an ancient power, an entity of amazing strength; the phoenix, bird of the sun. There is no one way to explain its possession of her or not another, no way of knowing what caused it to pick a human host, or what she had done to deserve its attention. It was and is a being beyond human understanding.
Its presence remained unknown though, the entity laying dormant within her, uneffecting her early life at all. Marie did well at school, had many friends, and was adored by her family, them often referring to her as 'their ray of sunshine.' Her brother and her remained close, despite the age difference, and she remained his closest confidant, standing by him when he finally told his family and friends he was gay. While the information was initially a shock, the four of them pulled through, and she did everything to encourage Jason's escapades in finding a boyfriend.
Marie met her first love at the age of seventeen, a guy in the year above her at school. While it was a remarkably difficult courtship, neither one wanting to admit their feelings or get together, the work of her brother finally paid off, and they ended up dating for a number of years, until both were out high school. Yet, things were not as perfect as one would expect, and her lover was unfaithful, often cheating on her at parties she wasn't invited to, her none the wiser. It took three years of a relationship for the truth to come out; her discovering him with one of her friends on the night of June 20th, 2020. Quite literally heartbroken, Marie left him on the spot, calling her brother for some moral support, driving back to her flat to try and get some space.
The following day, June 21st, would be the day that changed her life forever. At midday, having only just got out of bed, her brother still with her for comfort, the phoenix awoke. Unable to control herself or the new phenomenom at all, her first self-combustion set not only her alight, but the flat she was in, the brother who she so loved. She awoke a day later in hospital without a scratch on her, the only survivor from what was presumed to be an arson attack, that had killed everyone on her floor. When questioned about where and who she was, Marie could only answer with her name. But she knew not why she'd been there, knew not her address, her family, or the brother she had killed.
And so began her life as the phoenix.
She left that hospital knowing just that she was Marie Morse, and with the intrinsic knowledge she was changed, that she was eternal. Again, unsure of why, all she knew was that she'd been made more than human. But even with many of her memories gone, more heartbreak was to follow. Past family came to find her, question her, try and ask what had happened. She watched them suffer as she had to admit not knowing any of them, she watched them weep as she said she'd never known a Jason Morse.
And each year, on the 21st of June, she died and came back to life, unchanged and eternal. At first the death remained violent, but over time she began to feel the change within herself, learned to control it, at some level, leaning to become one with the being within her. Yet any friends she had made that year, any lovers she'd come to be with...each rebirth left them wiped from her mind, and though she couldn't remember them, each time they tried to find her, each time they looked hurt they'd been lost to her, a lingering feeling arose from past lives, fleeting glances at the others she'd broken.
Thus, only few things were engrained into her memory; she was a phoenix, she hurt people, and she could never be close to people. Not without hurting them.
And so she left her home town, moving to a small flat in New Orleans, working only part time jobs to pay the rent. She kept herself away from everyone she met, remaining detached despite longing company, and any that tried to get close she'd push away. Thus, when she was reborn, she'd find herself a new part time job, and move on without any links to the past. Her control over her latent pryokinesis allowed her to stop herself destroying others or her flat when her death come, and thus she was able to live alone, solitary...but miserable, possessed of only one link to her past, a fleeting dream – her sitting in bed with a faceless person, sipping tea, rain hammering on a misty window.
In more recent months, however, Marie has become more lonesome than ever, distancing herself to unbelievable lengths. However, deep within her, she is dying to be close to someone again, terrified of what it will do to them, but knows that an eternity alone will drive her insane.
