Just like the start of every bad horror movie that had ever been made ever! "Kai, are you sure they're here? This place seems kind of... dead? As she spoke, her booted foot pushed old medical equipment and debris from the floor of what was apparently a well respected medical facility. Now, it was simply the place Peyton was treading carefully through with her husband in tow while her mother watched their daughter. It was well known to everyone that knew the huntress that her little girl was the main reason she did anything anymore, but this one? Well this one was partly a favour to her father. It had been a long time coming, her parents retiring from the game. Really, Peyton didn't believe they were 'done', she didn't believe any hunter ever stopped being a hunter. Just like her husband, Peyton often itched to get out there and do what she'd always done best. Maybe not for the reasons she wanted to hunt a year ago, but Peyton always struggled to know what was out there in the world and not do anything about it, after all, she had a soul. If she had to take this one to make sure her father stayed safe when he was in no fit state to hunt, so be it.
Continuing to wade through the rubble, Peyton kept her eyes forward and her gun levelled. She couldn't understand how a group of black eyed demons were surviving in here, vampires maybe, they liked dank and dark as a rule, but this place stunk of damp and just getting through all the best the building collapsing had left was a nightmare. Nothing looked stable, the whole thing looked liable to fall down at any given moment. But her husband told her this was where they needed to be.... She'd trust her husbands word until the moment she died, just like she trusted that with every careful and quite step she took, he was always one behind. The further in, the lower she turned turned the brightness on her flash light, her eyes only leaving the area in front of her for a moment or two to scan the floor for anything that could pose a hazard, quickly resuming her original stance. He didn’t know exactly what it was yet, but he nudged it with his boot. Medical equipment, that much was a given when you took into account their surroundings, but this one looked used, and recently so. That in itself was cause for concern, the fresh red that stained the otherwise silvery metal, but it was the lock of hair twisted in its end that truly intrigued the old hunter, and he bent down to pick it up with his gloved hand. Kai had recently taken to wearing gloves on hunts, If only because he really didn’t fancy another warrant on his name, now he had a wedding certificate to trace it back too.
Picking it up, he held it in front of his face for a moment, and inwardly grimace. Yup, there was still scalp attached the to the hair, and it was fresh enough that he could still smell the coppery sweetness of the blood. Tossing the tool down, he once more fell into the seemingly practiced movement of following his wife, his gun aimed and pointed always in the direction she wasn’t looking.
”They’re definitely in here Peyton. We just gotta find ‘em. “ He finally replied, tapping her shoulder to get her to follow him down another corridor, hopefully towards the BED bastards they were looking for. He didn’t like demons on the best of days, but there was something about these ones that were making the foreigner grit his teeth in anger, and concentration as he moved.

If it was echoing, it was travelling. She just hoped it wasn't travel far enough to give them away. With the gentle tap of her shoulder, Peyton looked towards him, stepping backwards as she followed him. She kept checking the area in front of her, the area where her, entirely too sexy for his own good, husband walked before her, but covered their asses the entire time. This was, undoubtedly, one of the upsides to not having to work alone. She'd never seen herself as part of a 'husband/wife' team before though, this was a novelty to her. It wasn't the first time they'd ever hunted together, though it was probably the first time where they didn't bicker, shoot and then have intercourse again the closest wall, but it was something that Peyton hadn't thought would happen, at least not for a long time.
The place seemed like it could fall down around them at any minute, it made her wander how anyone could live there... Especially a pack of demons who could just as easily squat in an abandoned house or kill the bell boy a crappy motel. Oh if she was a demon, she'd live in style, have minions to do as she pleased, life would be pretty cushty. She, of course, had no desire to become one of the things she hunted, but should she become one? Nah, she wouldn't be in a dingy, smelly old abandoned hospital where the damp was more prominent than the very tiny amount of light that shone through the place.
Her mind was more preoccupied for a moment on the water dripping down the walls and the crumbling cieling, so much so she hardly noticed that the state of the floor was just as sorry as the rest of the building. It wasn't until a slight creek alerted her, but by that point it was too late, she tried to turn but it was no use, the floor seemed to disappear under her, taking her legs with her. After an initial gasp, Peyton lifted her hand, clamping it over her mouth and silencing the scream that threatened to come with her scream. Her other never left her gun, like there was anything she'd be able to do as she fell through the floor. It was a bitter sweet relief as her body stopped. She wasnt sure what was below her but it prevented her from moving her legs, and a push on the floor failed to push her back up. "Crap!" It was somewhere between a mumble and a whisper, barely audible to most, after all, she wasn't just in danger, she was in danger and stuck. Kai just didn’t have that kind of luck – he didn’t have the ‘in and out’ kin of lifestyle even when he longed for it. He couldn’t remember the last time a hunt had been somewhat straightforward, go in. kill the bad guy. Leave. And the more he thought about it these days, the less sure he was becoming of his own morals, his own standing on matters he had once been so completely, one hundred percent sure of. If someone who knew the man was to take a guess at what was plaguing him, they might stem it back to the appearance of a brother who had been long thought dead, buried and left in the forests of India. But no. This particular plague of doubt had begun long ago, when his now wife had been assaulted by a shape shifter dressed as him.
Still, at least when he was hunting, he didn’t have to worry so much about the semantics of a kill, and this one at least was pretty straight forward. Go in, kill the black eyed demons, get out. Simple. Easy. The only thing that should, could go wrong is if they were the ones caught by surprise and not the spat out remnants of hell. But then, like I said…. When did anything ever go as simply as the way it should?
The creak alerted him first. This was an old hospital, abandoned yes, but the floors were tiled even when they were wet. Old beams creaked. Old houses creaked and gave away your position to anything with a keen enough sense of hearing to pick out. Hospital floors should not creak. By the time he had span around on his heel, it was too late.
Kai’s eyes opened in fear as he threw himself at his wife, his gun held in a white knuckle grip in the one hand, but the other extended to grab her, snatch her from the fall only to clutch around nothing but the air itself, a split second too late. It was only years of discipline that kept the man from crying out as he slid on the tiles, and very nearly followed his wife down the hall.
Cling to the edge, his eyes scanned the dust and the debris, frantically searching for movement, life, a way down. Kai prayed to a god he had never believed him that Peyton would be okay, and found himself releasing a whoosh of relieved air when he heard her whispered curse, and finally spotted her red hair in the debris. ”Peyton!”. The word was hushed, as her own, and whispered with the tonation of a desperate man, as once more as kai’s eyes scanned the hole, the jagged edges, and searched for a way down. After years, she should have been stronger than that, better. She should have taken such a mishap in her stride and just.... got on with it. The fear set in stronger and faster than it ever had before. She instantly wondered why she agreed to do this in the first place. What if something happened to her?? Oh god. What if something happened? Saoirse was only six months old, she wouldn't have a single memory of her yet. What if she never knew who she was?! What if the pages upon pages that Peyton scrawled into her baby book weren't enough for her little monkey to know how much her mother loved her?? She'd fallen through a floor and she couldn't move. This was a sure fire way to die, everyone that ever watched a horror movie knew this. Just as her breath was starting to shake as much as her hands and the panic really started to set in... She heard it.
It was like a warmth that covered her, arms stretching around her and embracing her, telling her she was safe and that she'd never be alone, when in reality, all it was, was a voice. It was his voice. The voice of the only person in her life to make her feel as safe and protected as she needed to feel right now. Her hand moved her gun to her torso, readjusting it quickly into her other hand as she looked up to him. "Kai?" She half wondered why she was bothering to whisper, after all, the ceiling caving in would normally be a reason for people demons to investigate. She just hoped they assumed it was just the building naturally caving in on itself.
With slight grunt, Peyton tried to move her body below her waist again but her lack of success ended in a sigh and she looked around quickly before up at her rugged irish rogue. Her green eyes quickly looked back up to him, her spare hand swiping a piece of dark hair from her face. "Babe... I cant move!" She was still quiet but a bit more obviously panicked than she had been before. She didn't know if she dared shine a light in the dark to see what she was surrounded by, the mere stench was enough to put her off, but she couldn't help but feel she had less chance of getting out of there if she didn't know what she was facing.
Bringing her gun to her again, she gently twisted the flashlight, directing it down at the mass holding her body still. She gagged quickly as the sea of dismembered limbs and dislodged innards. Thankful for her relatively strong stomach, Peyton did everything in her power not to lose its contents as she looked right up at her her husband. "Kai! Get me out of here!!!!" It wasn't even panic anymore, so much as complete terror. For the first time in their relationship, Peyton found herself almost sounding defeated, she wanted to say words that she knew would anger the optimist in her as well as the man looking towards her. That didn’t mean however that the Irish hunter didn’t mean every word. It was his training that made his voice like that, the scars on his back and limbs proof of the stress and anxiety he went through to be able to remain calm in situations such as these. If kai’s father could see him now, he’d be proud of the man the teenager he had left had grown up to be. Or at least, the small voice, the one that often remained silent, in the back of kai’s head, hoped he would be proud.
The hunter had to wait for the dust to settle before he could even make out his russet haired wife in the gloom, and at the same time he could make her out, he could make out the mass of human flesh that was piled on top of her, seemingly fallen from a storage unit she had crashed through, or dislodged, when she fell. The smell enough was enough to make the hunter cough into his shoulder, the closet he had come to retching in literally years. Still, with the settled dust, kai could at least begin to work out how to get down there.
”baby, have you got you gun?” he asked, a silly question perhaps, but if she didn’t he was going to drop his spare down to her so she could cover him as he dropped down into the hole after her, and whilst he got her out. Whilst he waited for a reply, he mapped out the route to the floor in his head. He hoped it wasn’t too far to fall if he slipped.

Anyone else might see his lack of panic and blind emotion as a bad thing, but she knew better. She'd seen panic buried deep in his eyes while his voice remained calm, while he stayed collected. She remembered the way he stayed calm every step of the way through the last month of her pregnancy, through the birth of their child, how he spoke calm words to her that made her believe things would be okay but how, every time she looked into his eyes, she could tell he was just as terrified as she was. She might not know everything about the man, she didn't ask, she wouldn't knowingly put him through reliving that, but she knew enough to know why he was how he was, if anything, she admired his strength, his ability to come away with the situation he did able to love someone so completely. Anyone that saw the gruff irish man with the red headed infant they'd given life to would say he was a softy, the way he gushed over her gurgles when no one could see, or the if they could see the way he held his wife tight to his body as she slept, the way he held her face and kissed her when she was sad or the way he tugged her close when she was scared. Peyton clung to her man like he was a part of her that she'd die without, because quite simply, he was, and as he told her not to panic, that he was coming, she had to trust him, it was all she had.
She wished it was as simple as not panicking. His words had, undoubtable helped. Her fear had nothing to do with her faith in him or the way he said things, it was to do with the fact she was stuck in amongst a sea of body parts and she knew, darn well, that she was next. She wanted more than anything to reach out towards her man, to hold him, even just to see his face properly but she couldn't. The smell was starting to make her feel woozy. For the first time, she was thankful for the hours praying to the porcelain gods through both her pregnancies, the tricks she learned to calm her stomach. She looked up as he spoke again, nodding and holding her gun up towards him. "Yeah. I've got it." She was really starting to worry. She wished she could read his mind, know what he was planning, know what he was going to do. She didn't want him to do anything that risked both of them. All she could think about right now was the idea of her body being left without them, and she hated to do it. She'd never doubted him as a hunter, ever. She'd sent him out on hunts, knowing he'd come back to her as soon as he could, she'd never ever doubted it. Maybe it was the fact it was both of them. She wondered everything as she stayed there stuck. She tried to remember the last thing she said to her, if she told her she loved her. Sure, she was seven months old, she was never going to remember her mothers last words whether they were 'I love you', 'be good for grandma' or anything in between.
Peyton looked up again, still trying to find his face in the darkness. She was fighting the flood that was fighting its way to her eyes. "Kai... What are you going to do?" Her heart was beating so hard she swore she could hear it in her ears but at least the way she pressed her chin to her shoulder made it easier to stop crying. She never anticipated the next thing that came out of her mouth, it just came out. "Maybe you should just go." A missing gun, no matter the context, was always bad news, and even as he swung his legs into the hole his mind ran through the possibilities. Fingerprints, identification, no spares, lost ammo, inability to defend or provide effective cover… or just the simple fact that one of the things they were hunting could pick it up and use it against them. The list went on, but the latter would have been perhaps the most worrying of problems – a bullet was just as effective on human flesh as any form of demonic power. It was enough to make the hunter rethink the Kevlar vests he had worn as a youngster, when he was still, technically, training.
They were a lot lighter these days than they used to be…
Scanning the room below him once more, Kai smirked when she spoke, and shook his head. ”Never, Peyton.” And with that, he shoved his gun into the back of his jeans, twisted, and hung from the hole. From there it was a simple enough matter of swinging himself clear of the debris, landing in a five point roll to deaden the impact, he came to a stop on his knees, gun back in hand and looking around. Lara Croft, eat your heart out. His dad had been right, when he suggested free running was a great way to spend your free time… at the time, kai had looked at the old man like he was nuts, and had continued to so, until the first time he’d had to quickly scale a fence, or drop any certain distance.
Now, certain that there was no immediate danger, kai twisted and ran to his wife’s side, starting to pull away the bodies and various other part that were keeping her pinned, throwing them aside somewhat recklessly. Now he was here, he just wanted her out, wanted her safe.

She knew he was good at this, hell, she knew she was, but her man was bred to do this, he had moves that amazed and terrified her all at the same time, so it was stupid to doubt he would get out of this alive, or that he was capable of saving her, but every time she felt safe, she thought of those big hazel eyes that would stare up at her every day and render everything she ever knew pointless. She was going to get home. She had to get home. Of course, in amongst the mess of her thoughts, Peyton looked up at him just in time to see him ninja himself into the hole. She blinked as she watched him move with such routine and poise yet looks so freaking bad ass doing it. It definitely wouldn't be twisting the truth to say that honestly, it was a turn on... Suddenly, all her fear disappeared and one thing was for sure - Whatever bastards had made her feel it were going to pay. If for no other reason, she was going to have to burn a perfectly good pair of pants when she got home.
Her heart started again as Kai came towards her, beating rapidly but for a whole different reason. She tried with wriggle and shuffle herself free as he tried to move the mountain of parts that was holding her there. The more she was able to move the better she felt. She didn't have to worry that she was never getting out... She was nearly there!! With a final push, Peyton's body came loose, her legs like jelly for a moment as she tried to adapt to being able to actually use them. With a little wiggle of her hips, she looked up to Kai with a grin. It didn't last very long, not before her hands reached to grab her husband, pulling him hard into her body and putting her arms around him. To anyone else, this would have been normal. A man's wife simply holding him in thanks for saving her life..... Not Peyton. That embrace was something she would save for when they were home, safe and that moment of weakness, of wanting to hold him wouldn't risk their lives.
Once her arms were around him, there was a simple click of her gun before she held her arm straight in front of her, the other holding Kai to her for fear he'd move as she started firing rounds at whatever was staring at them from the door way. To some people, it might have made more sense to push Kai out of the way, but not to Peyton. If she pushed him, she risked disorientating him or putting him off.... More so, he could potentially turn to look at the thing she was shooting at. This way, she knew he had her back, literally. Peyton kept shooting, at least seven times, before the thing she was shooting at just disappeared. Releasing Kai, Peyton looked around cautiously, her gun still out and ready as her eyes darted about wildly. "If that was a black eyed demon, I'm Ghandi......."
