A BRIEF CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
Born into a family of hunters and raised in the 'life', Aaya Mendez has always had an aptitude for the skills and talents required to slay supernatural beings. Despite growing up in her ancestral home of Puerta Rica, she has, since the age of 5, constantly been moved from place to place, travelling to where her parents 'work' was to be found. While finding it difficult as a youngster, Aaya has since become used to never staying in one place for too long and has learned not to get attached to others or make 'friends'. She has never seen the point. Past experience has suggested that she won't ever be around long enough to keep such relationships alive.
Mostly home schooled, Aaya's parent's put as much effort into teaching her supernatural law as humanly possible. They believed that knowing what haunts the night was key to defeating it – and thus she spent hours in her early teens bent over grimoires and studying ancient texts. Having a near photographic memory, Aaya appeared, by the age of 16 at any rate, to be a theoretically brilliant hunter. She could recite entire books of lore without prompt, and was certain of near every weakness of every supernatural creature – something of which she was very proud. However, while she thought that made her both ready and able, her parents understood that while her knowledge was near flawless, she lacked any real field experience.
While they believed understanding to be key, they knew that one couldn't succeed without some knowledge of combat or having experienced an actual hunt.
Not wishing to teach her themselves, too afraid of the bond parents and daughters share may make them weak in her presence, they enrolled her in New York's Hunting Academy - an underground organization led by others of their kind in an attempt to teach younger generations to take the places of more well established hunters. Left there to integrate into the new society, Aaya was initially unsure of her new surroundings. Having never been to a school – the setting was strange, and it felt wrong not constantly moving homes. However, it soon became clear the benefits her new life held – friends were viable, and she has been near constantly top of every class she has partaken in, giving her ego a definite boost.
Since enrolling, Aaya appears to have done brilliantly. She has continued to study supernatural lore, and has learned to to protect and defend herself, her natural lithe build making her an witting and light footed combatant. Yet despite her supposed excellence – she has still never seen any of the creatures she's read about, nor experienced the thrill or dangers of the hunt – something she fears more than her cocksure demeanour may let on.
