N'awlins, 7:30 pm
Tellie slammed the hatch door on her Honda Fit and spun on her heels. She gave her parents a quick hug and kisses and grabbed her keys. "Tell Tess and the boys I said bye!" she called over her shoulder to them as she slid into her seat and started the car. Today was the first leg of her trip to Austin and the medical symposium with a short drive to the cabin where she’ll stay the night and then the rest of the drive into Texas. She planned on raiding her jerky smoker and filling it up again. By the time she returned, the next batch would be ready.
Traffic was light on the interstate and Tellie was glad she had waited. Typically leaving N’awlins was better after 6 pm most nights, and a little later on a Friday night. She hated sitting in traffic and she hoped there were no accidents on the long bridge over the Atchafalaya past Baton Rouge. Once on that bridge and if there was one, it was a minimum of 4 hours to clear it because of the remote access to that bridge. She mentally went over her list of what she had to accomplish before bedtime.
She turned the radio on softly and hummed along with the songs…
9:30 pm, somewhere between Baton Rouge and Lafayette on I-10, mile marker 123
Irritated, Tellie rolled the window down. What she had feared came true. A tractor trailer jackknifed on the bridge and she had just passed the halfway point of the bridge. The flashing lights of the various medical and emergency vehicles were giving her a raging headache. One because she knew she couldn’t get out of the car and help and two, just all that strobe lights was horrible right now.
10:15 pm, Breaux Bridge, LA, I-10
She finally cleared the site of the accident and now was smoothly driving off the bridge. She could see the end for the past hour, just couldn’t get merged fast enough to get there. Tellie sighed. This was one of the times she was glad she wasn’t an EMT, though that seemed to be the only job available in N’awlins as of late. There was still a lot of schooling she needed to complete a degree though.
11:30 pm, Tellie’s cabin, north of Lafayette, south of Alexandria
She slammed the smoker door closed and cleared the surrounding area a ways back of leaves and branches. They had a fire watch going in recent weeks and she debated about not leaving the smoker going. At least she could let it smoke overnight and then bank the coals. A few days stay here at the cabin next week would finish the job, she though. No chance of starting a fire here then.
Tellie tumbled into bed and feel asleep almost immediately.
10:10 am, near Texas/Louisiana Border, I-10
That alarm clock came way too early in her estimation. Tellie had hit the snooze several times before her brain engaged and reminded her that she had a date at 6 pm in Austin. She had allowed extra time so she now estimated she had about 3 hours to spare for now, instead of arriving at noon as she had originally planned. Barely enough time to grab a quick shower, lay down for a nap, and be in the diner for 6 pm when Travis should be there. As long as she woke up from her nap, that is!
Traffic was light today, and the miles sped by quickly. She ate some jerky instead of stopping for lunch past Houston. That would gain her a few extra minutes in her estimation. At 1 o’clock, she thumbed open her cell and called her mother at the house, her daily check in phone call.
“Hey mom! I’m almost there. …Yes, I banked the coals and did not leave them burning this morning. The parish was still under a fire watch from the drought of the last few months…. Yes, I’ll call the Damaras and stop by with Dad’s bottle. They’ll love it…. Uh, huh! .. I’m meeting Travvie tonight at 6 at the diner next to the Admiral . (embarrassed squirming )No, mom! I’m not going to have sex with him! Like I would do that. I’m not Tessa or Jake. Uncle Damon introduced us last year, remember. The geekie computer guy!....Right, love ya, mom. Tell everybody the same! I’ll call every night after dinner.” She closed her phone quickly. Phone calls with her mom tended to drain her emotionally.
2:50 pm, Austin, TX, Admiral Motel, room 13 (nah, Tellie isn’t superstitious!)
Tellie wearily dropped her luggage on the second bed and carefully locked the door behind her. She was not too tired to check the room for hidden cameras, bugs, insects and unusual smells. She pulled back the sheets to inspect for bed bugs and then closed the curtains. She then grabbed the salt container and spread some around the windowsills and behind the door. Satisfied finally, she stripped and took a quick shower, setting her alarm for 5:30 pm, plenty of time to get dressed for dinner. Or so she hoped.
5:45 pm, still in room 13
Frantically, trying on different outfits that she had brought along, Tellie had finally decided on the simple light purple t-shirt and her jeans. Not too classy, not too sexy and definitely girl next door. Just the impression she hoped to make. Meeting a guy was not her normal modus operandi. She was actually quite scared of guys and not because of anything they did, other than being jerks and too handsy in her few experiences. Whatever possessed her to contact Travis when this trip came up was something beyond her comprehension. But she was determined to make the best of it. At least she knew him, though it had been over a year since she had seen him. And he was older, nearer Tessa and Jake’s ages than hers, but not that made a difference. Age hardly did. In all of her life, with all the Jordans, Winchesters and Blairs, none made a rat’s ass about any age differences.
She ran her brush through her hair and put it up in a simple ponytail. A little bit of chapstick on her lips and her toilette was complete. Grabbing her id, door key and purse, she made her way to the little diner next door. She asked for a booth and sat facing the door, ready to spot Travis when he arrived. Ordering a coke, she perused the menu in the meantime.
