Well...This was one hellofa day. A series of nightmares about clowns had caused poor Miranda to be up every half hour checking every inch of Juliet's room. According to the child, it was very possible for a clown to hide under the couple of inches of space below a dresser. Eventually, Juliet was scooped up and pulled into the very exhausted mother's bed to sleep for the rest of the night. That very exhausted mother, however, was still kept up all night by the child rolling from one end to the other. It was no surprise that Miranda slept through her alarm by the time it went off, waking up hours later and just giving up on the idea of taking Juliet to school late.
Now, nursing on a cup of coffee, Miranda sat behind her desk, flipping through a file. She'd stolen a chair from someone else's desk and sat it across from her. Juliet sat comfortable, feet hanging just off the seat, body wiggling back and forth to try and get her chair to spin on its own. The typical babysitter wouldn't answer her phone, so it became 'bring your daughter to work day.' In the past hour, she'd made a bathroom request six times, stopping every time she saw someone to tug on Miranda's arm and proudly announce, "This's my mommy...She scared away monsters yester'night.' It began to seem more like show and tell, rather than a bathroom break.
Closing up the file with a huff, Miranda glanced up to Juliet. Suddenly, she shoved her chair back, jerking open the drawers of her desk and searching frantically in each one.
"What'cha doin?"
"I have a surprise for you, I just can't find it..."
"It's under there."
"Under where?" Miranda glanced up quickly, Juliet's face contorting and twisting until she busted out into a fit of bubbling laughter.
"I made you say underwear!" She cried out, shaking her head from side to side. Smirking lightly, Miranda opened up her last drawer, grinning at her find. Stashed deep in the back was a new coloring book and a small pack of crayons. Without saying another word, Miranda passed them over the desk to her daughter. Squealing, Juliet snatched up her prizes and dropped to the ground, lying infront of the desk and coloring away.
Within a few minutes, Miranda was caught back up in work as her phone rang. It wasn't long before a heated discussion began with a woman, very angry over the fact that her son had been arrested for violating his probation.
"Ma'am...Ma'am...Ma'am! I understand you're angry, but I am not his probation officer.....Ma'am, yes, I know, it was for you...But sending someone under the legal age to buy your alco----......Ma'am, plea---....Yes I---" With a frustrated sigh, Miranda hung up the phone once the woman had slammed her own down. Hanging her head in her hands, she sat in silence for a few seconds when it suddenly hit her.
She was sitting in silence.
"Juliet?" She looked up quickly, hanging over the desk to look over it. Nothing. Shaking her head, she moved to walk to the front of the desk (as if it'd help). Still nothing. Not even the coloring book.
"Juliet? She spun in a circle, looking high and low. Her face began to pale out, heart began to race, and her stomach sank. To those at their desks, she asked if they saw the redhead, each saying no.
"Juliet?!"How could she lose a child in a police station? Her child?!
Meanwhile, having successfully crawled her way away and around the desks of many, Juliet finally pulled herself back to her feet. Clutching her book close, she wandered around whichever part of the station she'd ninja-crawled her way to. Well...This didn't look familiar. Then again, she'd only seen the bathroom and where Dax was kept when he came in to work. Looking around, she began to walk quickly, cutting around corners quickly. Everything was so...Big. And new! It was like a whole new world had opened up for her to explore!
