Ghosts. As the early evening light waned into dust, Jake Jordan sat on the dock of the pond and contemplated his own haunting specters. With a bottle of whiskey at his side, bleary open eyes that hadn't slept in days and an expression that spoke of a man on his last legs, the former special ops soldier stared out across the water unseeingly.
Every once in awhile, the now almost empty container of Jack would rise to his lips and more of its contents would disappear down his seemingly parched throat but other than that... That was the only movement he made.
Until one looked directly into his eyes.
In those eyes, there was enough upheaval to satisfy even the most angst person on earth. A wealth of horror, grief and disillusionment waited there as his mind seemed to relive whatever tragedy he'd been faced with. To a casual observer, it might appear that the oldest Jordon sibling was still his usual, capable steady self but to those who knew him, the picture he made sitting alone in the dark with his emotions held in a death grip would have scared the living hell out of them.
Especially when there gaze took in the pistol that lay on his lap with a silencer on the barrel and a finger tapping restlessly on the trigger.
Oh yes, and his loved ones would have had reason to be scared at that very moment for Jake knew his mind was on the verge of snapping. Between waking up in cold sweats and screams on his lips to the bone jarring pain that his body took with each and every step he made, he literally felt as if he might go insane.
Ever since waking up in that military bed and being told that he may or may not walk again, he'd dealt with the grim reality that he'd failed his men and failed in the one thing he'd been taught to do since the day he was born. Guilt rode hard on his heart as flash of memory came and went. Visions of his men being blown to pieces ... Visions of the black eyed monster who'd killed them and Jake hadn't been able to do a damned thing about. His own injuries had made him incapable of taking on the demon that had targeted his squadron but that didn't stop him from feeling responsible.
Over and over his mind went as it tried to come up with a reason that he should have put two and two together about the killing and terrorized area but he's simply assumed it another standard military mission.
An assumption that would haunt him into the grave.. And probably beyond.
Groaning suddenly at all the "What If's" and "Should haves", Jake suddenly stood up and hurled the now empty bottle of whiskey out across the water. An angry snarl escaped him before his bad hip and leg gave out and he sprawled on the wooden deck in a hapless heap. Curses and harsh phrases escaped him until he finally made it back to sitting position. Frustration, self hatred, self disgust and a few other emotions flashed over his face before he seemed to recall the pistol in his hand and his green gaze locked on it.
In that moment, the answer seemed so easy and the barrel began to raise.

There was just something about driving at top speed down a gravel road, with Gretchen Wilson blasting and the wind against one’s face. It was fun, freeing, reminded her of what flying must feel like…
And it was completely obnoxious for everyone in a ten mile radius, which made it all the more fun. Why was it that pissing people off made her happy inside? Was that some kind of personality defect? It probably was…but, then again, she’d rather be a wild child delinquent, than have a stick up her butt, like her twin. The man had NO sense of how to have fun! His idea of a great night was sitting at home, drinking beer and squinting at a sports channel.
Oh, the pain! Her head! Her SOUL! How they were related, she had no freaking idea. The poor guy…she probably took all the enthusiasm and left him with Eyore.
They were thoughts that had her wondering why she was speeding toward Jericho’s somber bosom buddy, instead of hitting the town like she normally did. She tended to stay away from types like Jericho and Jake, whether she loved them to pieces or not…but there she was, zooming on toward his house.
She was an enigma, and she was proud of it. GO REDNECK WOMEN!
The tires on her Ford pickup squealed in protest as she slid to a stop. The familiar outline of the Jordan family cabin brought a smile to her face, as she remembered all those happy childhood moments spent there, when Dad took her and Jer when he went to visit Curse. She’d helped the girls play tricks on their brothers, flirted with the local townies before her uncle and father chased them away, swam out into the glimmering lake in the backyard…
It was paradise; all hidden away from the big, bad world outside. It was as if it were almost…exempt from change. Everything looked the same, smelled the same, felt the same, and given the sounds from the dock, was positioned the same. She could just see it now, she thought with a grin, lugging a cooler of beer around the back. Jake would be sitting on the deck, fishing, just like he always used to as a kid. The guy had an almost inhuman fascination with doing nothing but being in his own world, and she had to admire his ability to sit still for so long. Her? It was a miracle if she could make it two minutes without scaring off every fish in a ten mile radius.
With a little shake of her head, Imaya flounced her mini-skirt and platform shoes-self around back. She’d decided to come pay the younger Jordan brother a visit; a ‘reward’ for bailing her out and playing mum around her parents. Not to mention that he’d spent a hefty buck with the bail, withstood her inhuman appetite for seafood AND didn’t wince too much when she started singing with the radio on the way back to The Pit.
In short, she owed the little bugger, and she intended on paying in full. So, call her scared stupid when she made it around back and saw Jake sitting on the dock with something shiny and gun-shaped in his hand.
Oh, holy hell, Jake, she thought. What the HELL is this?
Quietly, so as not to startle him, YaYa put her cooler down and moved slowly toward the doc. She kept her voice chirpy and her face a mask of happiness as she addressed him, ”Well, there’s the best guy in the world! Jake Jordan; you finally listening to my brother and using a gun to catch fish? I know he might say it’s faster, but it’s gotta be bad for the environment.”
Her chest hurt as she saw the myriad of emotions on his face; the pain, the desolation, the anger. How had she not noticed this before? How had no one told her? How had HE not told her?
Keeping her movements slow and careful, she slid down onto the dock and let her feet dangle off the side. She didn’t get too close to him, sure that he wouldn’t hurt her, but not so much if he wanted close company. Letting her toes swish in the water, she kept her eyes on the waves.
”I wanted to come over and surprise you, Jakey…but I gotta ask; what’s going on?”

For freaking pete sake.
Couldn't a man end his own miserable existence without Yaya's familiar chatter invading his solitary space?
EVIDENTLY NOT!
What was it about the woman that keyed her in where to show up at the most pivotal times? Thirty.. Sixty seconds and his failure.. guilt... torture ... everything would have been over. But could she have done him the courtesy of keeping her cute ass home where it belonged? Fuck no.. Instead she had to show up and ruin his one chance to find some sense of bloody relief. It wasn't like he was going to pull the trigger in front of her. He might be selfish but he wasn't that much of a prick.
And that just made him madder.
Finally.. an emotion that didn't leave him feeling like the worlds biggest fucking failure. Suddenly, all those emotions he'd fought to keep in check hand bubbled up and when his face turned towards Yaya, his emerald green eyes with lit up with a fire that belied his normally causal demeanor.
"What the fuck do you care, Imaya? Do you want to pat me on the head too and tell me its all going to get better? Because if thats what you wanna do... Get back in your fucking truck and get the hell out of here." he snarled, shoving awkwardly to his feet and feeling his balance pitch underneath of him for a moment.
Grimacing inwardly at his uncontrollable show of weakness, the former soldier whirled away from the woman and stalked slowly towards the cabin. Logically, he knew he should apologize but at the moment.. he just didn't care if her feelings were hurt. He wanted to hurt someone. To make someone bleed in some little way like he bled.
Damn, he really was a rotten son of a bitch.
Reaching the cabin door, he threw it open and stomped inside. Behind him, he could hear her getting to her feet and moving but he didn't stop to see where she was going. After the greeting he'd just given her, she was no doubt leaving in a tiff the way he'd intended. Why that made him want to turn around and apologize, he had no idea, but he forced his face to remain forward and when to the cupboard for another bottle of whiskey.
Only to discover it was all gone. He'd drank the last of it.
Shit.
Breathing heavily, Jake leaned over the sink and tried to get his head to stop thumping but it was a loosing battle. Between the alcohol, the memories, the pain killers and his own violent emotions, he felt as it if it were going to explode at any moment and in fact.. Almost welcomed the idea. When the hell had everything gone so fucking wrong? Where had the path swerved and left him stranded in this barren, bleak desert?
Turning on the tap, the slender young man cupped his hands and then tossed cool water over his face. The blissful liquid refreshed his skin but not his mind. A part of him down deep railed at him for the sinful words he'd just yelled at the only woman he'd ever loved in his 25 years but another part declared that it was probably for the best.
He'd hoped one day to return home a hero and show her that he was the only man who could ever understand.. much less put up with.. her madcap ways but ... Life had put an end to that hope.
A woman like Yaya would never be content with a man with more emotional baggage than a rich woman and a prada sale. Never mind that he was a cripple with shrapnel still working its way out if his body and a piece logged dangerously close to his spine. All in all, he was living on borrowed time anyways so what could he even think to offer her anyways?

Well, when she decided to come over and do some sucking up to her new favrotie Jordan, she hadn't thought to bring body armor. But whoo! Call the fire department, because with a look like that, she should have been bald in under 60 seconds. She actually leaned back and away from him before she could stop herself. Jeezumcrow, this was not the charming, soft spoken Jake that she knew! When had he been hit by gamma rays and turned into the Hulk? She flinched under the heat of his wards and the harshness of his tone and could only stare after him in pure surprise as he stormed off.
Then she remembered whose blood she had in her veins and was on her feet in a second. Oh, she wanted to throw a sandal at him, but was too afraid he'd fall over and hurt himself! She heard him stomping around inside the house, slamming doors and other things and before she could stop herself, she was stomping right after him.
Now, a sane person might have thought about the fact that Jake was a) out of his mind, b) packing heat and c)pissed off. But YaYa was anything but sane.
She reached the door and paused, eyeing the tense figure on the other side. She was ready; all gung-ho to storm inside and start wailing on him for yelling at her, but that other, rarely listened to voice was urging her to think. When Jericho had just come back, half blind and hurting, he'd been a monster. He'd growled, yelled, thrown things and made himself so intolerable to be around that their own mother had been ready to kick his tushie. Jake had been through similar trauma, but he'd been the opposite. He'd kept quiet, with a smile on his face.
Oh, how all the pent up emotion must be poisoning him.
For the first time in her life, Imaya DeVoux was subdued when she walked into the house. Gone was the usual cocky, devil-may-care smile. Instead, she watched her childhood friend with an almost thoughtful expression on her face.
"I didn't come here to tell you anything was gonna be alright, Jake," She said to his back. She knew that the 'let's try to chase YaYa off' marathon was probably going to continue, but she couldn't leave if her life depended on it. Covertly, she looked around, searching for the gun. "Hell, I ain't God; I dunno if everything's gonna work out. I'm here because I wanted to see you. I wanted to share a beer with my best friend and shoot the shit the way we used to."
Slowly, as if circling a wild animal, she took a few more steps toward him. What the hell could she say to him? 'C'mon, honey, let all that anger out, 'cause if you don't you're gonna die of bitterness?' He'd just start foaming at the mouth again.
So, she stuck to the truth and went on. "I do care, by the way. You're one of the best guys I've ever known...and so help me God, Jacob Jordan, if you do anything stupid like try to shoot yourself, I'll bring you back! And you know what happens with the dead things I bring back."
An innapropriate vision of Jake dressed in sex slave gear had her pausing, but she quickly shook it off. Definitely not the time or place for THOSE kinds of fantasies, man. Maybe now was also not the time to lose that calm that she'd did her best to use, but she was on a roll. Gun or no gun; temper or no temper, she marched right up to him and tugged on his sleeve until he turned to face her.
"What you just did; the yelling? That was good. Keeping all...this" She motioned at his chest. "Bottled up inside is gonna drive you insane. So c'mon. Yell at me some more; tell me how you really feel. Do I make you crazy because I talk too much? Are you afraid of the metal in your lower half? Try to hit me; I don't care. C'mon, tough guy...what else you got cooped up in that head?"

Ok, so why the hell had he ever thought that Yaya would to the sane thing and walk away?
The sound of her voice cracking through the silence of the cabin had Jake closing his eyes and his shoulders hunching in. He really wasn't in the right frame of mind to play nice with her and yet.. She kept coming. He'd known she was crazy.. He hadn't realized she was suicidal. Fuck, any smart person would have gotten in that truck and drove away as fast as their little tires could carry them.
OH NO.. NOT YAYA of course. She'd decided to corner the wounded beastie.
It was enough to make Jake wanna groan in defeat.
And then the crazy woman did what she did best... She began to chatter at him. Holy Hell. And she didn't just TALK either.. She had to go poking at the festering wounds until the anger, the helplessness, the agony burst forward again. He wanted to whip around and snarl at her so he dug his grip into the wooden counter so hard that he swore he left finger imprints.
Thats when she made the "best friend" comment along with "One of the best guys I know."
Those words were enough to have him shoving off of the sink and turning to look at her with an expression so wild that most people would have fled for their lives. Her final challenge only made the roiling emotions he had inside bubble over and froth out like some sort of mad science project gone wrong.
Quicker than a blink, he was on her and had her body pinned against the cabin wall. With arms slammed into the wood above her, the former special ops soldier pressed against her soft curves with a body hard from long years of physical endurance and self discipline .
"I don't want to be your god damned friend, Devoux... After all these years, you still don't have a fucking clue do you?" he snarled down at her, keeping her pinned between him and the wall. "For christs sake, woman.. Open your bloody eyes. Every time you've needed me, I've come running. I've followed you around like some god damned puppy in hopes of a casual pat on the head. Do you think I do that for just any fucking woman? You and all your talk... You think I don't know why you bounce around like some kind of insane chipmunk on crack?
On some level, Jake knew that he wasn't acting like himself and he was probably scaring the hell out of the woman but he couldn't stop himself. Deciding that she NEEDED to be scared, he pressed on.
"For all that flamboyant behavior, your a big coward.... Your to afraid to risk your heart in something that might actually have some damned meaning when its all said and done. You want me to tell you what is is I'm feeling, exactly? Well here it is Darlin... I want you spread underneath me with your legs locked around my middle.... I want to take you in every way a man can love a woman and then some..... I want you screaming my name until your throat is hoarse and you can't make another sound..Most of all, I want my name to be the last one to leave your lips every evening and the first one there every morning... Hows that for some fucking truth for you? "
Then, not allowing her a word in edgewise, he lowered his head and kissed her with a passion that was almost punishing with its intensity. Vaguely, the young man wondered what the fuck he was doing but his hands slipped down to lock on each side of her face and the taste of her was intoxicating. After denying his need for so long, the dam had burst and all he wanted to do was bask in the sunshine of this woman's warmth.
Crazy fool that he was.
Hell, his sane self was expecting to die any moment by a wicked kick to the family jewels or a stiff right hook. After all, Yaya never took anything lying down. She'd no doubt bounce back shortly and then she'd finish the job he hadn't been able to do himself.

Right after she’d delivered her little ultimatum, Imaya wondered if she’d basically just poked a wounded animal with a sharp stick. Her mind flew back to memories of her twin, who tended to explode in fits of emotion during his first few weeks home. Jericho had HATED talking about his feelings, but once he got going…buy stock in body armor, because WHOOF, the guy went bat shit crazy! So when she started to demand that Jake leave off trying to bury everything inside and direct it all at her?
She was wondering how fast she could get to the couch, so she could use a cushion as a shield. Damn the lake house for not having anything metal close by. Didn’t Curse believe in armor as well as weapons?
But she never got the chance to do anything but stare. She’d been expecting some foaming at the mouth, but this? When Jake turned around to pin her with the most heated glare she’d ever seen from the normally collected ex-soldier, she found herself flinching backwards. Holy shit on a stick, what can of worms had she just opened up?
As he snarled and spat out those words…those fateful, from-the-heart words, she felt her world tilt. Jake Jordan…the kid she used to torment, hide behind and babysit for a dollar an hour was…he…what? She’d always prided herself on being quick on her feet and quick to reply, but when he declared that he didn’t want to be her friend, but rather something more, she could only stare at him stupidly. Her back was to the nearest wall before she could blink, and her front was covered with a solid mass of angry male. In all reality, she should be trying to make him back off; declaring that she’d never thought of him in any other way than a close friend and brother-figure. She should duck under his arms, shoot back a sarcastic retort and beat a hasty retreat…
But she didn’t. She couldn’t; she was rooted to the spot and gasping for air as her body instinctively molded against his. It was as if she’d been waiting forever to feel him so close to her. It was…right.
”I’m not a coward,” She replied weakly, trying to cut into his heated declarations. But he cut her off, and all she could do was look into his eyes and shiver under the depth of the emotions there. Her hands went between them, flattened against his chest as if to push him away, but she remained still beneath him.
She felt weak in the knees as images of what he was saying flashed through her mind, and her fingers curled into the thin fabric of his shirt. And if she’d felt tingles of pleasure from where he was pressed up against her, oh Holy GOD, she wasn’t prepared for his kiss! It shot through her body and punched her normally feisty side in the face, leaving her boneless against him. When his hands cupped her face, she breathed out a moan against his lips and tilted her hips toward him, cradling his body against hers. She pulled him closer, wanting the kiss to go on forever, but she couldn’t help but mutter against his mouth.
”I have no fucking clue why you didn’t point this out to me sooner,” She managed to gasp, practically shoving her hands under his shirt to feel the warm muscle beneath. ”I always thought you…abagaba…thought of me as a sister. I stayed away, ‘cause…didn’t wanna mess anything up. ‘Cause that’s what I do…I mess things up…oh fuck it!”
Letting her fingers curl into the strong muscles of his back, she gave up on trying to explain herself and sank into him. Thank you, God, she thought hazily, for gifting your ‘creation’ with the gift of the Whoobah Kiss!

Damn it... Why the hell wasnt she slapping him or telling him to go fuck himself? Didn't she know he was barely holding on by a thread? That his need for her burned so damned hot that he was amazed the freaking cabin wasn't burning down around their ears? Why the hell was she just standing there, allowing him to use her like some sort of playboy bunny?
Thank god for her normal desire to talk.
When Yaya broke their kiss to speak, Jake tried to pull a hard rein in on his passions. Vaguely, he heard her words but they barely made impact expect to bring home the realization that she wasn't fighting him or trying to push him away. Instead.... Instead she seemed to be almost welcoming them.... Did she have any bloody clue how close she was to being ravished against the good damned wall? Self preservation alone should have had her at least pushing at his hard chest.
But then... Honestly.. what did Jake really expect? This was Yaya. She'd give the shirt off her back to ease someone else pain. And unfortunately, he was in no condition to reject what she seemed to be offering.
"Yaya.." he choked out in a husky tone. "You've got to tell me to stop .. You've got to push me away... If you don't, I'm going to have your clothes off and be buried so deep inside you that your going to have trouble walking straight for the next week.."
Bracing himself above her once more, Jake leaned his forehead against hers and tried to breath. Unfortunately, this only pressed his body more tightly against hers and his reaction to her nearness was unmistakable.
SHIT.
"Yaya.... If you don't want this.... Leave now... Runs as fast and as far as you can because I'm not going to be able to hold out much longer... I've wanted this to much and for far to long..... Your not hte one messing this up... I am.. You could never mess up anything between us.... Just... Have some pity on me .... I can't pretend that I don't feel this for you anymore and I don't have the strength to pull away......"
That said, the soldier closed his eyes and waited for her to make her decision.

Imaya couldn’t help but suck in a surprise breath when Jake rested his forehead against hers and brought his lower parts even harder into her. Jesus, God, Whoever Else was upstairs…this was torture, pure and simple. He felt so damn good against her, moving and rubbing against all the right places…and he wanted to talk? As in flap gums instead of exploring her tonsils, as he’d been doing a great job of just seconds earlier? SHIT, why did she say anything? Why did she start talking?
For once in her life, she hated her goddamn mouth!
Letting her forehead rest against his, she freed one hand from where it was molding itself into the hard contours of his back. She pressed her fingers against his cheek, then slid them down to his chin, forcing him to look up at her. His words had her shivering with something more than mindless lust. He was asking more from her than anyone ever had…and for the first time, she had no idea how to respond.
The day was just turning out to be a freaking list of firsts, wasn’t it? She flinched back from him, she didn’t know what to say, she actually hated her quick tongue…man, if this kept going on, she’d probably end up slipping into a coma.
”I gotta admit, Jordan…you’re scaring the shit out of me,” She said truthfully, looking straight into his eyes. What she saw there made her shiver again and tilt her hips toward his. Oh GOD, that was good… ”I don’t know if I’m what you need. I’m screwed up and hard to handle…you know it; so don’t deny it. But I…I don’t want to go anywhere. So do us both a favor, okay?” She nipped at his bottom lip, then smoothed her tongue over it to take away the sting.
There was the familiarly impish look in her eyes when she spoke again, letting her fingers leave his face to slide under the hem of his jeans. ”Shut the fuck up and do me. We can worry about everything else when we’re too tired to stand.”
And with that, she captured his lips again, practically climbing him until she remembered his injury. With an impatient sound in her throat, a hand snagging a handful of hair at his scalp, and one leg curled securely around his waist to keep him where she wanted him, she urged him to live up to his words.
She didn’t want him to pull away…and to hell with the consequences.

Well, she couldn't say he hadn't warned her.
With control snapping like a loaded fishing line, Jake did exactly as she'd ordered. Somewhere far away, he registered the fact that he was probably coming at her like a run away bull in a mating rut but he couldn't have stopped to save his life.
Before he even knew what he was doing, his hands were under her shirt and it was suddenly flying across the room only to catch on the ceiling fan blade. Paying no attention to where the offending garment might have landed, the hunter continued in his quest for both their satisfactions and felt her little hands do the same to his own clothing.
Once her hot, velvetly skin was available for his caress, his lips trailed down over her neck to the frantic pace of her heartbeat. His own seemed to beat in tune to her rhythm and a growl escaped his throat before he could beat it back. Her little return moan turned him into a wild man and then the world ceased to exist. There seemed to be no need for any foreplay as they were both wild with need so the hunter didn't even bother with platitudes.
By the time they were both free of their confining garments, their bodies came together with liquid grace right where they stood. Desire spurred them on from one location to another before they both came to rest in an exhausted heap on the small bed tucked into the loft of the cabin.
Looking back later, Jake would be abashed at himself for taking her like that but at that very moment.. It had just happened. One thing for sure thought, he'd never be able to look at that wall the same again.
When the windstorm of passion had finally abaitted and the aftermath glow started to fade, Jake lay starting up at the ceiling with a pensive expression. He could feel Yaya breathing softly beside him and the liquored haze was gone from his system. He didn't know how to face her with all that he'd just said and done but he knew he couldn't hide either. If there was one thing he wasn't, it was a coward. However, would she mock him with her normal, careless banter or would she understand that his emotions were to ravaged to handle that sort of brush off? Had she slept with him simply because he hadn't really given her any choice or could she truly care about him?
God, listen to him... He was becoming such a nancy boy. A person would have thought he was the woman in this situation.
Raising a hand, he rubbed his face absentmindedly before sighing. God, he had to get a handle on things before he did succeed in driving himself loony.

Oh. Good. God in Heaven. The words slowly drifted through her mind in a haze of sounds and images. Slowly, Imaya shifted, testing out sore muscles that protested each movement. She was lying on something warm and lightly hard…but comfy at the same time. She shifted slightly and sucked in a surprised breath when certain parts of her she hadn’t previously been introduced to, decided to smack her upside the head. She blinked a few times, yawned against the ridiculously comfortable surface she was lying on…
Then gave Jake an owlish look as she realized that 1) she was sleeping on him like he was a walking mattress, 2) she was naked and seemed to be sticking to him like baloney on tile, and 3) she’d just slept with her childhood friend.
Talk about one helluva wake up call.
Covering her mouth with the back of her hand, so as not to kill him with her ‘morning breath,’ a sheepish smile came onto the normally feisty woman’s face. From the look on Jake’s own handsome mug, he was obviously enjoying the company of some pretty nasty demons. Was he still sporting that crazy from before? If he tried to pull a gun again, she was gonna shove it up his nose, she thought with an inner growl.
”Hey there,” She said, sliding off of him to lie on her side. ”Sorry if I squished anything important, there. You…you look like you got a lot on your mind. Care to spill?”
Ah, she could just guess what he was thinking. what just happened, was she feeling sorry for him, would she hate him, what would happen now. Similar questions came tumbling through her head, but YaYa was never one to question her actions. She’d never before allowed herself to see Jake in the way he had obviously seen her. He was her best friend’s brother, the kid she used to tease in her youth…and the only guy other than Jericho that she really trusted to be at her back. He was…hell, he was Jake. The seemingly quiet, calm rock of the Jordan family.
It was almost frightening to have seen the other side of him. Frightening…and irritating at the same time. Was it wrong to want to smack a hero?
Not bothering to cover herself up- they’d both seen all of their special parts anyway, so why bother?- she carefully slid her leg along his, smoothing her foot along his ankle. She didn’t want to upset his injury, but she couldn’t stop from touching him either.
”If you’re having doubts about what just happened…don’t. I’m don’t have any.”
